  1. A railroad crossing has a clearly marked stop line, and its warning requires you to stop. Which position should you use?

Correct answer: Stop at the marked stop line.

The statute gives the marked stop line priority when you are required to stop. Do not replace it with a guessed distance or stop on the tracks.

  2. A train has passed, but the crossing gate is still partway up and opening. May you drive around or under it?

Correct answer: No; wait until the gate is fully open and the crossing is safe.

Do not drive through, around or under a crossing gate while it is closed, closing or opening. A moving gate is not permission to squeeze through.

  3. You plan a normal turn on a two-lane urban street posted 25 mph. For at least how far before turning should your turn signal operate continuously?

    Correct answer: 100 feet.

In an urban or metropolitan area under these stated road conditions, signal continuously for at least the last 100 feet before the turn. Four-lane highways and higher-speed highways have the longer requirement.

    Source: Colorado Revised Statutes 2026, section 42-4-903 (2); current on September 13, 2026. ↗

  4. You will turn from a four-lane highway posted 35 mph. What minimum continuous turn-signal distance applies?

    Correct answer: 200 feet.

The 200-foot requirement applies on all four-lane highways, as well as other highways where the prima facie or posted limit exceeds 40 mph. Do not choose the shorter distance merely because this road is posted 35 mph.

    Source: Colorado Revised Statutes 2026, section 42-4-903 (2); current on September 13, 2026. ↗

  5. Before a turn from a two-lane highway posted 55 mph, how far must you signal continuously at minimum?

    Correct answer: 200 feet.

A highway with a posted limit above 40 mph requires at least 200 feet of continuous signaling before a turn. The rule concerns the approach to a turn, not a fixed distance automatically imposed on every lane change.

  6. After checking that a lane change is safe, when should you signal your intention?

Correct answer: Before beginning to move into the next lane.

Indicate the intended lane change before starting the lateral movement, and move only when reasonably safe. A signal communicates intention; it does not give you priority over traffic already in the lane.

  7. You want to park an ordinary car beside a driveway. No officer or traffic-control device directs an exception. What minimum driveway clearance is required?

    Correct answer: 5 feet.

Do not stand or park within five feet of a public or private driveway. This does not override additional posted restrictions or permission needed to use a particular parking area.

  8. An ordinary car is parked 10 feet from a fire hydrant, with no applicable direction creating an exception. Is that far enough?

Correct answer: No; standing or parking within 15 feet of the hydrant is prohibited.

Keep at least 15 feet from a fire hydrant when standing or parking under the stated conditions. An available curb space is not automatically a lawful parking space.

    Source: Colorado Revised Statutes 2026, section 42-4-1204 (2)(b); current on September 13, 2026. ↗

  9. You plan to park an ordinary car near a crosswalk at an intersection. No officer or traffic-control device directs otherwise. How far away must it be?

Correct answer: At least 20 feet from the crosswalk.

Do not stand or park within 20 feet of a crosswalk at an intersection. This clearance is separate from the prohibition on stopping directly on a crosswalk.

    Source: Colorado Revised Statutes 2026, section 42-4-1204 (2)(c); current on September 13, 2026. ↗

  10. You find a curb space 20 feet before a roadside stop sign on its approach side. No officer or traffic-control device directs an exception. May you park there?

Correct answer: No; the approach clearance is at least 30 feet.

Standing or parking is prohibited within 30 feet on the approach to a roadside stop sign, yield sign, signal or flashing beacon. The question concerns the approach side, not a blanket distance in every direction.

    Source: Colorado Revised Statutes 2026, section 42-4-1204 (2)(d); current on September 13, 2026. ↗

  11. You plan to park an ordinary car 30 feet from the nearest rail at a railroad crossing. No exception applies. Does that meet Colorado's parking clearance?

Correct answer: No; parking within 50 feet of the nearest rail is prohibited.

Railroad parking clearance is 50 feet from the nearest rail. Do not confuse parking with the separate 15-to-50-foot stopping rule used at certain crossings.

    Source: Colorado Revised Statutes 2026, section 42-4-1204 (3)(a); current on September 13, 2026. ↗

  12. In an ordinary car, you want to stop in a marked bike lane to wait for a friend. There is no traffic emergency, officer direction or traffic-control exception. Is a short wait allowed?

Correct answer: No; the stopping prohibition also applies to a brief wait in the bike lane.

The current statute expressly prohibits stopping, standing or parking in a roadway's bike lane, subject to its stated traffic-conflict and official-direction exceptions. Waiting for a friend is not one of those exceptions.

  13. You are driving on a Colorado highway just after sunset. What does the lighting rule require, even if some daylight remains?

Correct answer: Display the required lighted lamps from sunset to sunrise.

The statutory period begins at sunset, not a half-hour later. Poor light or weather can require lights at other times too; parked-vehicle exceptions are a separate matter.

    Source: Colorado Revised Statutes 2026, section 42-4-204 (1); current on September 13, 2026. ↗

  14. In daytime fog, people and vehicles ahead are not clearly visible at 1,000 feet. What does the lighting rule require while you drive?

Correct answer: Display the required lighted lamps despite it being daytime.

Lights are required when insufficient light or unfavorable atmospheric conditions prevent people and vehicles from being clearly discernible 1,000 feet ahead. Choose lighting appropriate for fog and reduce speed for visibility.

    Source: Colorado Revised Statutes 2026, section 42-4-204 (1); current on September 13, 2026. ↗

  15. At night, an oncoming vehicle is approaching within 500 feet. Which headlight setting should you use to avoid glaring into its driver's eyes?

Correct answer: Low beams aimed to avoid glare.

Use a non-glaring beam when within 500 feet of an oncoming vehicle. Proper low beams meet that requirement; high beams can impair the other driver's view.

    Source: Colorado Revised Statutes 2026, section 42-4-217 (1)(a); 42-4-216 (1)(b); current on September 13, 2026. ↗

  16. At night, you follow another vehicle within 200 feet and are not overtaking or passing. What should you do with your high beams?

Correct answer: Switch from high beams to low beams.

When following within 200 feet, use a beam other than the uppermost one, except for the statute's overtaking-and-passing exception. The stated scenario is ordinary following, so use low beams.
