  1. What are hazardous-material containment rules designed to do?

Correct answer: Keep hazardous material safely inside its packaging

Containment rules protect people and the environment by controlling packaging and handling.

  2. Which subjects belong in the knowledge needed for the hazardous-materials endorsement test?

Correct answer: Recognizing hazards, safe loading, placarding, and safe transportation

The H knowledge test addresses the safe handling and transportation of hazardous materials. Passing it is not a substitute for all other endorsement and job-training requirements.

Source: Florida CDL Handbook (July 2022), printed p. 9-2 / physical PDF p. 110: 9.1.3 Assure Safe Drivers and Equipment ↗

  3. When a hazardous material is first offered for shipment, who is responsible for its classification and proper shipping description?

Correct answer: The shipper offering the material

The shipper must correctly classify and describe the material and ensure authorized packaging. Carriers and drivers still have their own acceptance and transportation duties.

    Source: Florida CDL Handbook (July 2022), printed p. 9-2 / physical PDF p. 110: 9.2.1 The Shipper ↗

  4. What should a carrier do with a shipment that is improperly described, marked, labeled, or prepared?

Correct answer: Refuse it until it is properly prepared

The carrier checks preparation before transportation and refuses improper shipments.

    Source: Florida CDL Handbook (July 2022), printed p. 9-2 / physical PDF p. 110: 9.2.2 The Carrier ↗

  5. Before accepting a shipment, a driver sees hazardous liquid leaking from a package. What should the driver do?

Correct answer: Refuse the leaking package or shipment

Do not accept a leaking package as ready for transport. Report the problem so properly qualified personnel can arrange a safe, compliant disposition.

    Source: Florida CDL Handbook (July 2022), printed p. 9-2 / physical PDF p. 110: 9.2.3 The Driver ↗

  6. Where may HazMat shipping papers be kept while the driver is behind the wheel?

Correct answer: Within reach while belted, and either readily visible or in the mounted driver-door holder

Immediate reach while restrained by the lap belt is required in both cases. The papers must also be readily visible to someone entering the cab or be in the inside driver-door holder.

Source: 49 CFR 177.817(e)(2)(i): Immediate reach while belted AND visibility or driver-door holder ↗

  7. Where should shipping papers be left when the driver exits the vehicle?

Correct answer: In the mounted driver-door holder or on the driver's seat

When the driver is away from the controls, use the inside driver-door holder or the driver's seat so authorities can find the papers.

Source: Florida CDL Handbook (July 2022), printed p. 9-15 / physical PDF p. 123: 9.6.10 Shipping Papers and Emergency Response Information ↗

  8. How many hazard classes are used in the HazMat system?

    Correct answer: Nine

The regulations organize hazardous materials into nine classes.

    Source: Florida CDL Handbook (July 2022), printed p. 9-3 / physical PDF p. 111: 9.3.1 Definitions; hazard classes ↗

  9. What is the usual shape of a package hazard-warning label?

    Correct answer: Diamond

The usual package hazard-warning label is a square positioned on a point, giving it a diamond shape.

    Source: Florida CDL Handbook (July 2022), printed p. 9-3 / physical PDF p. 111: 9.3.2 Package Labels ↗

  10. What is the required order of the basic HazMat description?

Correct answer: ID number, proper shipping name, hazard class or division, then packing group if assigned

Use this order for the basic description. A packing group is included only when one is assigned; not every hazardous material has one.

    Source: Florida CDL Handbook (July 2022), printed p. 9-7 / physical PDF p. 115: 9.3.5 The Item Description ↗

  11. Which is an authorized way to identify hazardous entries on a shipping paper that also lists nonhazardous freight?

Correct answer: Place an X before the basic description in a column headed HM

An X in the HM column is one method; RQ may replace it when appropriate. Other methods are listing hazardous entries first or using contrasting-color entries; highlighting is permitted on reproductions.

Source: 49 CFR 172.201(a)(1): Identifying hazardous entries on mixed shipping papers ↗

  12. When an emergency-response telephone number is required on a shipping paper, who must provide it?

Correct answer: The shipper offering the hazardous material

The offeror supplies the required number for a knowledgeable emergency-information provider. It must be monitored while the material is in transportation; a callback-only service is not enough.
