  1. Does passing the modernized vehicle-inspection test show that you checked every item in the federal inspection rules?

Correct answer: No; the test samples safety-critical inspection knowledge.

Section 11 describes a safety-critical test, not every federal inspection guideline. Drivers must still know and carry out the inspections required for their operation.

  2. For the Section 11 inspection test, which checklist preparation is permitted?

Correct answer: Use the provided checklist without added notes before the test.

Indiana Section 11 permits the provided checklist and checking off completed items during the test, but no added notes beforehand. A prewritten inspection script is not an approved checklist.

  3. An applicant points to a steering component and says its name. What else does the modernized inspection require?

Correct answer: Explain the condition or defects being checked on that item.

Credit requires identifying the item and explaining what you are inspecting it for. Simply naming a component does not demonstrate knowledge of its safe condition.

  4. During the Section 11 test, must you crawl underneath the truck to earn inspection credit?

Correct answer: No; the test does not require crawling underneath it.

The handbook expressly says you will not have to crawl under the vehicle. Identify the required items and explain the inspection without putting yourself in an unsafe position.

  5. You are about to leave the cab for the modernized walk-around inspection. What should you do first?

Correct answer: Set the parking brakes and place the transmission in neutral.

Secure the vehicle with the parking brakes and neutral before exiting. Use wheel chocks when needed; leaving an unsecured vehicle can be an unsafe act.

  6. The modernized inspection evaluates one axle. How should you prepare?

Correct answer: Learn the required inspection for every axle on the vehicle.

Although the test requires one axle inspection, Section 11 says to be prepared to perform the same inspection on all axles. The selected test portion is not a reason to ignore other equipment.

  7. How should you explain checking the critical fluids in the modernized engine-area inspection?

Correct answer: With the engine off, identify the level points and add/full marks.

Identify the applicable dipsticks or sight glasses and explain checking between the add and full marks with the engine off. Include the fluids appropriate to the vehicle, such as hydraulic brake fluid when equipped.

  8. The engine is hot when you reach the cooling-system inspection. What should you avoid?

Correct answer: Removing the radiator cap while the engine is hot.

Opening a hot radiator cap can release hot pressurized coolant. The handbook specifically warns against removing it while the engine is hot; use the vehicle's safe inspection method.

  9. How do you show that the dashboard turn-signal indicators work during the modernized inspection?

Correct answer: Operate each signal and observe its corresponding indicator.

The indicators must operate when the corresponding controls are used. Knowing where an indicator is located does not demonstrate that it functions.

  10. An examiner helps check lights while you operate the controls. What remains your responsibility?

Correct answer: Specify each light and where the examiner should observe it.

You must direct the helper to the relevant locations and identify exactly which lights to check as you activate them. Dashboard indicators do not replace observing the exterior lamps.

Source: Indiana CDL Manual (September 2022 modernized edition), Section 11.4, Lights Operations Check, physical PDF page 141. September 9, 2022 section. Reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  11. The wiper blades look intact. What demonstration is still needed in the modernized inspection?

Correct answer: Operate the wipers and activate the windshield washers.

Check that the arms and blades are secure and undamaged, then demonstrate smooth wiper operation and functioning washers. Appearance alone does not prove either system works.

Source: Indiana CDL Manual (September 2022 modernized edition), Section 11.1.1, Wipers/Washers, physical PDF page 138. September 9, 2022 section. Reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  12. What shows the examiner that the heater and defroster function?

Correct answer: Operate their controls and demonstrate the systems working.

Section 11 calls for identifying, describing and demonstrating the heater and defroster. A clear windshield at one moment is not proof that the equipment operates.

Indiana random inspection and skills preparation practice

Answer 20 questions from this specialist topic only. This is our untimed study format, not the verified length, timing or scoring of an official BMV test.

Study sources and operating limits

Knowledge preparation for Indiana’s modernized vehicle-inspection and basic-control format, not a hands-on test or training course. BMV adopted the updated requirements on August 12, 2024. Questions cite the Indiana pages we checked; its Sections 11 and 12 correspond to the modernized model, not an older maneuver catalog. Study the correct vehicle-class checklist and actual manufacturer procedures. Inspection comes before basic control, which comes before the road test. Exercise-specific pull-ups and looks are scoring allowances, not everyday safety limits. Follow the examiner and meet the separate licensing and applicable ELDT requirements.

These original DMV Practice Lab scenarios cite their actual sources: Indiana requirements for local rules and the identified handbook or federal source for shared safety topics. We compared the relevant specialist topics with the Indiana manual on September 14, 2026. The short tests and random draws use these 80 practice questions.

Independent knowledge practice, not a BMV examination, registered entry-level driver training (ELDT), medical certification or permission to operate a commercial vehicle. Complete the applicable BMV and training requirements separately. Short tests and random draws are our study formats, not verified official exam lengths or topic weighting.
