  1. You are preparing for a normal right turn from a single turn lane. Which path is appropriate?

Correct answer: Approach from the rightmost portion of your lane without swinging left, then enter the closest lawful receiving lane.

The handbook directs drivers to turn from the proper edge of their lane and enter the closest lane. A wide swing can mislead or endanger nearby traffic.

  2. Two adjacent lanes are permitted to turn left. You start in the outer turn lane. What should you do through the turn?

Correct answer: Stay in the corresponding receiving lane until the turn is complete.

When multiple lanes turn, maintain your lane through the intersection. Any later lane change requires its own safe gap and checks.

  3. You plan an ordinary turn on a Maine road. For at least what distance before turning should the appropriate signal be given continuously?

Correct answer: The last 100 feet before the turn.

Maine's ordinary turn-signal requirement is at least the last 100 feet. Signaling does not replace the requirement to make the movement safely.

  4. Your mirror shows no vehicle in the lane you want. What should you do before moving over?

Correct answer: Signal, check the blind spot in that direction, and recheck that the gap remains safe.

Mirrors do not cover every nearby area. A brief shoulder check and another assessment of the gap help detect a vehicle entering the same space.

  5. An entrance ramp has an adequate acceleration lane. How should you join expressway traffic?

Correct answer: Use the lane to approach traffic speed, find a safe gap, check and signal, and yield while merging.

The acceleration lane provides space to prepare for a compatible-speed merge. Through traffic is not required to yield its lane to an entering vehicle.

  6. You are approaching your expressway exit and have moved into the appropriate lane. Where should ordinary exit slowing begin?

Correct answer: In the deceleration lane, then continue reducing speed for the ramp.

Plan the exit early and signal. Using the deceleration lane for slowing reduces interference with through traffic while allowing a safe ramp speed.

  7. You pass your intended expressway exit. What is the safe response?

Correct answer: Continue to a later lawful exit and adjust the route.

The handbook prohibits backing on the expressway and stopping there except for an emergency. A missed exit is a routing problem, not permission for those maneuvers.

  8. You follow a slower car near a hillcrest that hides oncoming traffic. May you begin passing to the left?

Correct answer: No; wait until there is an adequate clear view and the pass can be completed safely.

A hidden oncoming vehicle can enter the passing path. A lawful pass requires sufficient clear view and room; slow traffic ahead does not supply them.

  9. You have passed another car on a two-lane road. Before returning to the right, what should you verify?

Correct answer: That you can see the entire passed vehicle in the rearview mirror and have a safe gap, then signal and check.

Returning too early can cut off the passed driver. The handbook's mirror guidance helps establish separation but does not replace checking the actual traffic space.

  10. A car starts a lawful pass of your vehicle. What should you avoid doing?

Correct answer: Increasing your speed while the other vehicle is overtaking you.

Maine prohibits increasing speed while being overtaken. Cooperation helps the other driver finish without an unnecessarily prolonged conflict.

Source: Maine Revised Statutes, Title 29-A, section 2070, 2: conduct of the vehicle being passed; current official text reviewed September 29, 2026 ↗

  11. The car ahead is waiting to turn left. The only available path on its right is an unpaved shoulder outside the main traveled way. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait; do not use that shoulder to pass.

Maine permits right-side passing only under specified safe conditions and not by driving off the pavement or main traveled portion. A waiting left turn does not authorize shoulder passing.

Source: Maine Revised Statutes, Title 29-A, section 2070, 6: passing on the right; current official text reviewed September 29, 2026 ↗

  12. A two-way lane is available under Maine's two-part left-turn provision. You are leaving a driveway to turn left, and the near half of the road is clear but the far travel lane is not. What may you do if it is safe and controls permit?

Correct answer: Enter the two-way lane as the first part of the turn, then wait for a safe opening into the travel lane.

The statute allows this two-part entry from a driveway or entrance. It does not turn the center lane into a through lane or remove the need to yield before merging.

Source: Maine Revised Statutes, Title 29-A, section 2051, 2(D): two-part left turn from driveway or entrance; current official text reviewed September 29, 2026 ↗
