  1. A non-exempt truck-and-trailer combination has a gross combination weight rating of 32,000 pounds and a trailer GVWR of 12,000 pounds. Which CDL group is required for that combination?

    Correct answer: Class A.

This combination meets both Class A thresholds: a GCWR of at least 26,001 pounds and a towed-vehicle GVWR above 10,000 pounds.

  2. A non-exempt straight truck has a GVWR of 30,000 pounds and does not tow a trailer. What is the minimum CDL class that covers it?

    Correct answer: Class B.

A single vehicle rated at 26,001 pounds or more falls in Class B. A heavier combination with a trailer over 10,000 pounds is a different classification.

  3. A non-exempt bus is designed for 17 people, including its driver, and is too light to fall in Class A or B. Which CDL group applies?

Correct answer: Class C, with the required passenger qualification.

Class C includes vehicles outside Classes A and B that are designed for at least 16 people including the driver. The design capacity, not just today's occupancy, matters.

  4. Two otherwise qualified Nebraska applicants seek ordinary, non-excepted commercial freight work. What minimum ages apply to intrastate and interstate operation?

Correct answer: Intrastate applicants must be at least 18; interstate applicants must be at least 21.

Nebraska’s current self-certification chart sets 18 for intrastate operation and 21 for ordinary non-excepted interstate operation. The chart separately identifies certain excepted interstate categories; this question does not concern those exceptions.

  5. A Nebraska applicant meets the issuance requirements for a new CLP. How long does Nebraska DMV state the permit is valid?

Correct answer: One year from its issue date.

Nebraska DMV specifies a one-year CLP. Supervision and all applicable vehicle and endorsement limits continue to apply during that period.

  6. A Nebraska CLP holder is practicing in a commercial truck on public roads. Which supervisor meets the federal accompaniment requirement, assuming that person is otherwise authorized for the trip?

Correct answer: A valid CDL holder with the needed class and endorsements, in the front seat beside the learner and directly supervising.

For this truck practice, the accompanying driver must have the proper CDL group and endorsements and sit beside the learner under observation and direct supervision. A following vehicle or sleeper berth is not sufficient.

  7. A Nebraska applicant finishes the required training seven days after the CLP is issued. May the applicant take the CDL skills test immediately?

Correct answer: No. The CLP must still be held through the required 14-day period.

Nebraska requires the CLP to be held for at least 14 days before CDL skills testing. Training completion does not replace that holding period.

Source: Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles, General Information - minimum CLP holding period; current official source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  8. A Nebraska learner has the required supervisor and a valid CLP. What other license must accompany the CLP during practice?

Correct answer: The learner’s valid Nebraska Class O driver license.

Nebraska’s CLP page requires the permit to be carried with a valid Nebraska Class O license. The permit adds limited commercial learning authority rather than replacing the underlying license.

  9. A Nebraska applicant seeks a first Class A CDL and no ELDT exception applies. When must required training from a registered provider be completed?

Correct answer: Before taking the Class A CDL skills test.

Covered first-time Class A or B applicants must complete the required entry-level training before skills testing. Passing a knowledge test is not a substitute for that training.

  10. A CDL holder seeks a hazardous-materials endorsement for the first time and has no ELDT exception. When is the required registered-provider training needed?

Correct answer: Before taking the hazardous-materials endorsement knowledge test.

Required ELDT for a covered first H endorsement must be completed before the knowledge test. Nebraska also requires its DMV to verify that completion in the Training Provider Registry before the applicant proceeds to testing.

Source: Nebraska CDL Manual, March 2026 issue (core version March 2025; operational sections dated July 2017), Nebraska Specifics page 5, first hazardous-materials endorsement and TPR verification; physical PDF page 9. 11. A first-time Nebraska hazardous-materials endorsement applicant passes the knowledge test. Is that score alone enough to establish security eligibility?

Correct answer: No. The applicable TSA security threat assessment must also be completed.

Nebraska requires the applicable TSA security threat assessment for a hazardous-materials endorsement. Passing the knowledge test does not replace the security assessment.

Source: Nebraska CDL Manual, March 2026 issue (core version March 2025; operational sections dated July 2017), Nebraska Specifics page 8, Hazardous Materials Security Threat Assessment; physical PDF page 12. ↗

  12. A driver holds the proper CDL class but has an L restriction. May the driver operate that class of commercial vehicle with air brakes?

Correct answer: No. L prohibits operating an air-braked commercial motor vehicle.

An L restriction limits air-brake-equipped CMV operation. Holding the correct vehicle class alone does not remove the equipment restriction.

Source: Nebraska CDL Manual, March 2026 issue (core version March 2025; operational sections dated July 2017), Nebraska Specifics page 1, L - No Air Brake equipped CMV; physical PDF page 5. ↗
