  1. Your light turns green while a vehicle is still clearing your path through the intersection. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait until the vehicle has safely cleared before entering.

Check the actual intersection before moving. The green indication does not make an occupied path safe.

  2. A traffic officer directs you to stop even though your signal is green. Which direction controls?

Correct answer: Stop as the officer directs.

When an officer is directing traffic, follow the officer’s instructions rather than conflicting signs or signals.

  3. The crossing gate is down but you cannot see a train. May you drive around it?

Correct answer: No; stay stopped until the gate is raised, lights stop flashing and the tracks are clear.

A lowered gate is not optional merely because the train is out of view. Check all tracks before proceeding after the warnings end.

  4. At a four-way stop, another vehicle stopped before you and its path is clear. Who should ordinarily go first?

Correct answer: The vehicle that arrived and stopped first.

The manual describes letting the first driver go as common courtesy, with a continuing duty of care. If in doubt, yield to the driver on the right instead of insisting on priority.

  5. You and a driver on your right reach an uncontrolled intersection at the same time. Your paths conflict. What should you do?

Correct answer: Yield to the driver on your right.

Where there is no stop sign or signal, yield to traffic from your right. Continue watching for mistakes and be ready to avoid a crash.

  6. You are leaving a driveway with no stop sign. What does Nebraska’s handbook direct you to do before entering the street?

Correct answer: Stop before the sidewalk area, then yield to pedestrians and approaching traffic.

Stop before crossing the sidewalk even without a stop sign. The driveway entry does not give you priority over pedestrians or road traffic.

  7. A car is already circulating through the part of a roundabout you want to enter. What should you do?

Correct answer: Slow and yield, then enter counterclockwise when there is a safe opening.

Entering traffic yields to circulating traffic. Travel counterclockwise, select the proper exit and signal the exit intention.

  8. On a two-way street, you are already in an intersection when an emergency vehicle approaches with proper lights and siren. What should you do?

Correct answer: Clear the intersection safely, then pull close to the right edge and stop until it passes.

Yield clear of the intersection unless an officer directs otherwise. Stopping inside it can block the emergency vehicle.

  9. Another vehicle occupies the freeway gap you hoped to use. Who must adjust?

Correct answer: You must yield and find a safe gap before entering the through lane.

A signal states your intention but does not create a gap or right-of-way. Entering traffic must yield to traffic already on the freeway.

  10. You are already circulating in a roundabout when an emergency vehicle approaches. What should you do?

Correct answer: Continue to an exit, then pull right where there is room for it to pass.

Do not block the roundabout. Clear it and yield outside where the emergency vehicle has room.

  11. An approaching motorcycle has a flashing turn signal. Is that alone enough reason to pull from your driveway in front of it?

Correct answer: No; wait until its actual movement and a safe gap make entry safe.

Motorcycle turn signals may not cancel automatically. Wait until the rider’s actual movement and a safe gap establish that entry is safe.

  12. Traffic is stopped just beyond the railroad tracks and there is no room for your whole car on the far side. The crossing warning is inactive. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait before the tracks until enough space is available beyond them.

Check the space beyond the tracks before entering. A clear warning signal does not create storage space on the other side.
