  1. A non-exempt truck-and-trailer combination has a gross combination weight rating of 32,000 pounds and a trailer GVWR of 12,000 pounds. Which CDL group covers that combination?

    Correct answer: Class A.

The combination exceeds the Class A 26,001-pound threshold, and its towed unit exceeds 10,000 pounds. The trailer and combination ratings both matter.

Source: Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, 49 CFR, 383.91(a)(1), Group A combination classification; current official source reviewed September 29, 2026. Cross-check: https://dmv.nv.gov/cdlcertify.htm, CDL License Classes, Class A. ↗

  2. An otherwise qualified 19-year-old receives a Nevada CDL. Which work stays within its age-based K and R restrictions?

Correct answer: Intrastate commercial driving without passengers or hazardous materials.

Nevada licenses drivers aged 18–20 with K for intrastate commerce only and R for no passengers or hazardous materials. Ordinary interstate CMV operation and P/H endorsements require age 21.

Source: Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, CLP Guidelines & Requirements, Age 18–20 and Age 21+; current official source reviewed September 29, 2026. Cross-check: https://dmv.nv.gov/cdl.htm, Getting Started with Your CDL → Meet Requirements & Get Medical Clearance, minimum age 18. ↗

  3. A 20-year-old Nevada CDL holder wants to add either a passenger or hazardous-materials endorsement. The proposed trips would remain inside Nevada. What age requirement still applies?

Correct answer: Nevada requires the applicant to be at least 21 for either endorsement.

The Nevada guidance requires age 21 for P and H endorsements, separately from the interstate-operation age requirement. Staying inside Nevada does not waive that endorsement age.

Source: Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, CLP Guidelines & Requirements, Age 21+; current official source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  4. A Nevada applicant assumes a commercial learner’s permit replaces the need for an underlying driver’s license. Which credential arrangement is required?

Correct answer: The CLP holder must also hold the required valid Nevada driver’s license.

Nevada requires a valid Nevada noncommercial or commercial driver’s license for the CLP. Federal CLP rules likewise require the holder’s valid license from the jurisdiction that issued the permit.

Source: Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, How to Apply, valid Nevada non-commercial or commercial driver’s license; current official source reviewed September 29, 2026. 5. Who may directly supervise a Nevada CLP holder practicing in a truck, assuming everyone described is otherwise authorized for the trip?

Correct answer: A driver aged 25 or older with the proper CDL class and endorsements, at least one year of the required commercial driving experience, seated next to the learner.

Nevada requires the supervisor to be at least 25, properly licensed for the vehicle, and to have at least one year of licensed commercial driving experience in the necessary class and endorsement. In a truck, the supervisor must be physically beside the learner.

  6. A Nevada applicant completes the required ELDT one week after the CLP is issued. Does that permit the applicant to take the CDL skills test before holding the CLP for 14 days?

Correct answer: No. The minimum CLP holding period still applies.

Nevada requires a CLP to be held for at least 14 days before any skills test. Required training and the minimum holding period are separate conditions.

Source: Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, Skills Testing, CLP holding period; current official source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  7. A Nevada learner plans practice around the CLP’s original validity period. What period does Nevada currently specify from issuance?

    Correct answer: 180 days.

Nevada issues CLPs valid for 180 days from issuance. Renewal and any required retesting are separate matters; the federal maximum does not turn Nevada’s initial permit into a one-year permit.

Source: Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, CLP Requirements and CLP Expiration and Renewal, 180-day validity; current official source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  8. A Nevada CDL holder changes to a higher vehicle class that requires a skills test. Does the existing CDL allow the driver to skip obtaining a new CLP?

Correct answer: No. A new CLP is required, and the CLP rules start over.

Nevada requires a new CLP for a class, endorsement, or restriction change requiring a skills test and states that all CLP rules restart.

Source: Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, License Classes and Endorsements, change requiring a skills test; current official source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  9. A Nevada CLP expired 35 days ago. The holder wants to resume the licensing process. What does the expired-permit rule require regarding knowledge tests?

Correct answer: Retake all knowledge tests.

Nevada requires all knowledge tests again when the CLP has been expired for 30 days or more. A valid underlying license does not waive this permit-expiration rule.

Source: Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, CLP Expiration and Renewal, permit expired for 30 days or more; current official source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  10. Before renewing a Nevada CLP, a learner passed one part of the CDL skills test but did not finish the others. Can that passed part be banked through the renewal?

Correct answer: No. Nevada requires all CDL skills tests again after the CLP is renewed.

Nevada expressly says skills-test portions may not be banked when a CLP is renewed. Passing part of the test does not preserve it through the permit renewal.

Source: Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, CLP Expiration and Renewal, no banking of skills-test portions after renewal; current official source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  11. A Nevada N-endorsed CLP holder has a qualified supervisor. A tanker is empty after carrying hazardous material but has not been purged of residue. Is it suitable for the learner’s road practice?

Correct answer: No. It must be empty and purged of the hazardous residue.

A tank-endorsed CLP permits only an empty tank vehicle. A tank that previously carried hazardous material must also be purged of residue.

Source: Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles, Driving with a CLP, Tanker Restriction; current official source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  12. A Nevada P-endorsed CLP holder has the required supervisor aboard. May the learner drive a regular bus route carrying ordinary fare-paying commuters?

Correct answer: No. Ordinary service passengers are not permitted under the CLP passenger exception.

Federal P/S CLP rules allow specified training, examining, auditing, and supervising occupants—not ordinary service passengers. Nevada requires the passenger-carrying restriction on these CLPs.

Source: Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, 49 CFR, 383.25(a)(5)(i)–(ii), P/S CLP passenger limitations; current official source reviewed September 29, 2026. Cross-check: https://dmv.nv.gov/clp.htm, License Classes and Endorsements, P and S CLPs require the P restriction. ↗
