  1. Emergency responders need to identify a load’s hazards quickly. Which shipping-paper information is especially useful for finding the relevant Emergency Response Guidebook entry?

Correct answer: The proper shipping name and hazardous-material identification number.

The ERG is indexed using material identification information, including proper shipping names and identification numbers. Accurate papers help responders identify the material.

  2. An unknown substance appears to be leaking from hazardous-material cargo. Should you approach and smell it to identify the chemical?

Correct answer: No; use shipment information from a safe position and avoid contact or inhalation.

Do not identify a leak by touching or smelling it. Toxic material can injure you, and smell is not a reliable warning of danger.

  3. You suspect a hazardous-material cargo fire and the closed trailer doors are hot. What is the appropriate action?

Correct answer: Keep the doors closed, call for emergency help, and warn people away.

Opening doors can feed the fire with oxygen. Hazardous-material fires require specialized training and equipment; keep shipment information available for responders.

  4. Hazardous material is leaking from your stopped vehicle. A truck stop with a telephone is several miles away. Should you continue there to get help?

Correct answer: No; move only as safety requires, keep people away, and summon help without spreading the leak along the road.

The manual warns against continuing a leaking journey merely to find help. Protect yourself, keep others away and upwind, and give emergency responders the shipment information.
