  1. You are already on an interstate and notice a car approaching the end of an entrance ramp. A lane change away from it is safe and permitted. Which action can help traffic merge smoothly?

Correct answer: Signal and move over safely to make room.

The guide recommends making room for entering vehicles when a lane change is safe. Check surrounding traffic first; cooperation does not justify an abrupt move or stopping a through lane.

  2. Traffic and road conditions are normal, and your exit has a separate deceleration lane. Where should you reduce speed for the exit ramp?

Correct answer: Once fully in the deceleration lane.

Use the dedicated lane to slow to an appropriate ramp speed after leaving the through lane. This question assumes normal conditions; respond to hazards or stopped traffic wherever they occur.

  3. A severely sleep-deprived driver drinks an energy drink and feels more alert. Does that establish that a long drive is safe?

Correct answer: No; brief microsleeps can still occur despite feeling more alert.

NHTSA warns that coffee or energy drinks alone may not be enough. A seriously sleep-deprived driver can still have microsleeps; a temporary alert feeling does not replace adequate sleep.
