Alaska · 20-question sample · Mark one correct answer for each question.

  1. 1. C — A noncommercial instruction permit.

Alaska allows a noncommercial instruction permit from age 14. The permit authorizes supervised practice, not independent driving.

    Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - Non-commercial instruction permit; printed p. 4; PDF p. 8 · page 8

  2. 2. A — A licensed 22-year-old with two years of experience driving that vehicle class.

The supervising driver must be licensed, at least 21, and have at least one year of experience in the same type or class of vehicle. In a car, the supervisor sits beside the learner.

    Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - Non-commercial instruction permit; printed p. 4; PDF p. 8 · page 8

  3. 3. D — Hold a valid instruction permit for at least six months in total.

Turning 16 alone does not complete Alaska's learner stage. Applicants age 16 or 17 must have held a valid instruction permit for at least six months.

    Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - Non-commercial instruction permit; printed p. 4; PDF p. 8 · page 8

  4. 4. B — 40 total hours, including at least 10 in progressively challenging conditions.

The required certification covers at least 40 hours, with at least 10 in progressively challenging circumstances such as nighttime or inclement weather. Completing the hours does not replace the other licensing requirements.

    Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - Provisional licenses; printed p. 5; PDF p. 9 · page 9

  5. 5. B — The driver's 17-year-old sibling.

Siblings are an exception to the provisional restriction on passengers under 21. Being a friend or coworker does not create that exception.

Source: Alaska DMV - Provisional License - Provisional License Restrictions

  6. 6. D — Driving directly home from the workplace.

The employment exception allows travel to or from work or within employment duties along the most direct route. It does not authorize unrelated nighttime trips.

Source: Alaska DMV - Non-Commercial License Restrictions and Types - Restriction B: Provisional Driving Hours of Operation

  7. 7. A — Within 30 days of the change.

Alaska's handbook requires written notice of a name or address change within 30 days. A still-valid license does not remove that reporting duty.

Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - Other information - Address or name change; printed p. 9; PDF p. 13 · page 13

  8. 8. C — Proof of liability insurance must be available in the vehicle.

Active coverage and proof of coverage are separate requirements. Keep proof of liability insurance available in the vehicle.

    Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - Financial responsibility laws; printed p. 10; PDF p. 14 · page 14

  9. 9. D — Leave a written note with your name, address, and telephone number.

After stopping and attempting to find the owner, leave the required identifying and contact information. The owner's absence does not excuse leaving without notice.

Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - What to do in case of every crash, item 8; printed p. 11; PDF p. 15 · page 15

  10. 10. C — Arrange needed emergency help and avoid moving the person unnecessarily.

The handbook says to help injured people, arrange an ambulance if needed, and avoid moving an injured person unless necessary. Unnecessary movement can worsen an injury.

Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - What to do in case of every crash, item 3; printed p. 11; PDF p. 15 · page 15

  11. 11. B — Driving after consuming any amount can lead to a citation or arrest.

Alaska's under-21 operating-after-consuming rule is not limited to the adult 0.08 threshold. Feeling sober or bringing a passenger does not eliminate the restriction.

Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - Under 21 violations - Minor operating after consuming alcohol; printed p. 16; PDF p. 20 · page 20

  12. 12. A — It has not made the alcohol leave the body faster.

Coffee or fresh air may change how awake someone feels, but they do not sober the person up. Arrange a sober ride instead of using alertness as proof of safe driving.

Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - Facts you should know about alcohol, item 7; printed p. 18; PDF p. 22 · page 22

  13. 13. A — Ask the prescriber about side effects that could affect driving.

A lawful prescription can still affect alertness or driving ability. Ask about driving-related effects; nonprescription cold and allergy medicines may also impair driving.

Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - Drugs, items 1-2; printed p. inserted Drugs page after 19; PDF p. 24 · page 24

  14. 14. B — A properly used, approved rear-facing child safety seat.

A child under one year must be rear-facing under the rule described in the handbook, even when the child weighs more than 20 pounds. Follow the child-seat manufacturer's instructions.

Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - Safety belt use is required by law, child restraint item 1; printed p. 21; PDF p. 26 · page 26

  15. 15. C — An approved booster secured by a belt, or another appropriate approved child restraint.

This child is over four but under eight, below 57 inches, and between 20 and 65 pounds. A seat belt alone does not meet the described requirement for this child.

Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - Safety belt use is required by law, child restraint item 3; printed p. 21; PDF p. 26 · page 26

  16. 16. D — Use both the lap and shoulder portions properly.

The lap and shoulder portions work together to restrain the body. The handbook explains that a lap belt alone does not protect the head and chest as effectively.

Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - Facts you should know about safety belts, item 4; printed p. 20; PDF p. 25 · page 25

  17. 17. C — Park in a safe place before reviewing the directions.

Plan directions before moving. If you need to review them during the trip, ask a passenger for help or stop in a safe location so the map does not take your attention from driving.

    Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - Distracted driving, item 7; printed p. 24; PDF p. 29 · page 29

  18. 18. A — At least four seconds behind the vehicle ahead.

The handbook recommends the four-second method, while separately noting a two-second regulatory minimum. Adjust the gap upward when conditions require more room.

Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - How to avoid rear end collisions - Four-second rule; printed p. 27; PDF p. 32 · page 32

  19. 19. D — Increase it to six seconds or more.

The handbook calls for six seconds or more when towing or when the surface is wet or slippery. Both conditions can make a short stopping gap less forgiving.

Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - How to avoid rear end collisions - Four-second rule; printed p. 27; PDF p. 32 · page 32

  20. 20. B — Pull over safely to let the following vehicles pass.

Alaska's handbook identifies a duty to pull over safely when five or more vehicles are immediately behind on a rural two-lane roadway. Do not stop where pulling over would be unsafe.

Source: Alaska Driver Manual, Rev. 10/2025 - What the law says about following; printed p. 27; PDF p. 32 · page 32
