Practice questions
1. A steady red light controls your approach. A stop line is painted before the crosswalk. Where must you make the required stop?
- Before the front of your car crosses the stop line
- At the far edge of the crosswalk
- Beside the signal pole, even if beyond the line
- Just inside the intersection where cross traffic is easier to see
My answer:
2. As you approach an intersection, the light changes to steady yellow and you can stop safely before entering. What should you do?
- Slow and stop before entering the intersection
- Accelerate so the front of the car enters before red
- Continue because a yellow light grants a new right-of-way
- Brake only after reaching the crosswalk
My answer:
3. A yellow centerline is broken on your side and solid on the opposite side. What does the marking allow you to do?
- Pass when visibility, traffic and other restrictions make it safe and lawful
- Pass only if the opposite-side driver signals approval
- Pass without checking for oncoming traffic
- Cross the centerline only to make a left turn
My answer:
4. You are leaving a private driveway to enter a public road. Which traffic has priority?
- Vehicles already approaching on the road you are entering
- Your car, because it is coming from the other drivers' right
- Your car after its front wheels cross the road edge
- Only traffic approaching from your left
My answer:
5. On an ordinary street with no signs directing a different path, how should you position a passenger car for a right turn?
- Approach and turn as close as practicable to the right curb or road edge
- Approach from the centerline to make the turn wider
- Start from the left lane and cross the right lane while turning
- Move into the opposite lane before beginning the turn
My answer:
6. When may Pennsylvania's 65 or 70 mph freeway limits apply?
- On freeway sections where PennDOT has posted the applicable higher limit
- On every road with two or more lanes in each direction
- On every freeway, even without a posted higher limit
- Whenever surrounding vehicles are traveling at that speed
My answer:
7. A street is properly signed against parking opposite a fire-station entrance. Pennsylvania's rule prohibits parking within what distance of that entrance on the opposite side?
- 75 feet
- 20 feet
- 30 feet
- 50 feet
My answer:
8. The posted limit is 55 mph near a clearly marked emergency response area. Moving to a nonadjacent lane would be unsafe. What speed limit does the Move Over fallback require?
- No more than 35 mph, and slower if needed to pass safely
- No more than 45 mph if traffic is light
- Exactly 20 mph regardless of the posted limit
- Up to 55 mph if you use your hazard lights
My answer:
9. Why should you adjust the head restraint for your height before driving?
- It can reduce the severity of neck injury in a crash
- It lets you sit farther from the pedals without changing the seat
- It replaces the protection provided by a shoulder belt
- It makes the rear seat safer even if it does not support your head
My answer:
10. Under dry-pavement conditions, what following-time guideline does the Pennsylvania manual recommend?
- At least a four-second cushion
- A one-second cushion whenever traffic is moving steadily
- A two-second cushion regardless of conditions
- A fixed one-car-length gap at every highway speed
My answer:
11. A driver is following too closely, and a safe open lane is available to your right. What should you do?
- Move right when safe and let the driver go by
- Speed up until the following driver stops gaining on you
- Brake sharply to make the following driver leave more room
- Match the following driver's aggression by blocking the lane
My answer:
12. What does it mean to avoid overdriving your headlights?
- Drive so you can stop within the road distance illuminated ahead
- Choose a speed based only on how far the next vehicle is ahead
- Drive faster when the road beyond the beam looks dark and empty
- Use the high-beam setting as permission to keep the same speed everywhere
My answer:
13. What should you do with cruise control on a slippery, snow-covered road?
- Leave it off and manage power directly
- Use it to keep the drive wheels turning at a fixed speed
- Set it slightly faster so the vehicle does not bog down
- Use it only while turning, when steady speed is most important
My answer:
14. What roadway conditions should you anticipate in a construction area even when traffic is still moving?
- Narrow lanes, uneven pavement and abrupt changes in lane alignment
- Normal lane widths and smooth pavement until workers signal otherwise
- The same lane alignment shown on an old navigation map
- A clear shoulder that can always be used as a travel lane
My answer:
15. You keep drifting toward a rumble strip and struggle to stay alert. What should you do?
- Stop at a safe place and rest rather than continue driving drowsy
- Open a window and continue until your planned fuel stop
- Increase your speed so you reach the destination before falling asleep
- Follow a truck closely so its movement keeps your attention
My answer:
16. What must a driver do at the sign shown?
- Come to a complete stop, then proceed when safe
- Slow down without stopping if the road looks clear
- Stop only when another road user is present
- Continue because cross traffic must yield
My answer:
17. What should a driver on the main roadway expect at this sign?
- Traffic will join the roadway from the right
- The right lane will become a separate exit
- A new right lane will continue without merging
- Opposing traffic will begin in the right lane
My answer:
18. What condition does this sign warn about?
- The road can become unusually slippery when wet
- Loose gravel is certain to cover the entire road
- Vehicles must weave between obstacles
- The roadway has a permanent series of sharp curves
My answer:
19. A 22-year-old is applying for an initial Pennsylvania learner's permit. How many accepted proofs of Pennsylvania residency must the applicant present?
- One
- Two
- Three
- None if an identity document is available
My answer:

Pennsylvania · 20-question sample · Mark one correct answer for each question.
1. A — Before the front of your car crosses the stop line
Use the marked stop line. If none exists, stop before the near crosswalk; if neither exists, stop before entering the intersection.
2. A — Slow and stop before entering the intersection
Yellow warns that red is coming. Stop when it is safe to do so; do not speed up to beat the change.
3. A — Pass when visibility, traffic and other restrictions make it safe and lawful
The broken line is the side from which passing may be allowed. It does not remove the need for a clear, lawful passing opportunity.
4. A — Vehicles already approaching on the road you are entering
Entering from a driveway requires yielding to approaching roadway traffic. Do not apply the ordinary same-time intersection rule to take priority.
5. A — Approach and turn as close as practicable to the right curb or road edge
The normal right-turn position is near the right edge. Official lane-use devices can require a different course.
6. A — On freeway sections where PennDOT has posted the applicable higher limit
The higher freeway limits depend on official posting. Traffic flow or the number of lanes does not itself establish a 65 or 70 mph limit.
7. A — 75 feet
The opposite-side fire-station restriction is 75 feet when properly posted. The distance at the driveway entrance itself is a different rule.
8. A — No more than 35 mph, and slower if needed to pass safely
When the lane change cannot be made safely, the law requires at least a 20 mph reduction from the posted limit and a speed reasonable for safety.
9. A — It can reduce the severity of neck injury in a crash
A properly positioned head restraint cushions the back of the head. Follow your vehicle's adjustment instructions; it does not replace a seat belt.

10. A — At least a four-second cushion
The manual uses a four-second guideline for dry pavement. Increase space when visibility, traction, traffic or vehicle conditions require it; no fixed gap guarantees safety.

11. A — Move right when safe and let the driver go by
Letting a tailgater pass can remove the conflict. Do not turn the situation into a contest or use abrupt braking to retaliate.

12. A — Drive so you can stop within the road distance illuminated ahead
A hazard may appear only when your lights reach it. Your stopping needs must fit the distance you can actually see; the beam setting does not guarantee that.

13. A — Leave it off and manage power directly
Cruise control can continue applying power when wheel grip is poor. Direct, smooth control of power is important on slippery roads.

14. A — Narrow lanes, uneven pavement and abrupt changes in lane alignment
Work zones can change the physical driving path. Watch the road and temporary layout rather than relying on familiar conditions.

15. A — Stop at a safe place and rest rather than continue driving drowsy
Lane drift and difficulty staying alert are warning signs. Get safely out of traffic and address the need for rest.
16. A — Come to a complete stop, then proceed when safe
This sign requires a full stop. Where present, stop at the stop line before proceeding when safe.

19. B — Two
Applicants age 18 or older must present two accepted proofs of residency. Identity and residency are separate document requirements.
20. C — They printed or viewed PennDOT's distracted-driving educational materials
The current certification includes PennDOT's distracted-driving educational materials. That requirement was added after the 2021 manual and appears on DL-180C (6-25).
