No Passing Zone sign
What does it mean?
The yellow pennant identifies the beginning of a no-passing zone. It reinforces the no-passing restriction indicated by pavement markings, DO NOT PASS signs, or both; an apparently clear view does not cancel that restriction.
What to do when you see it
- Remain in your lane rather than starting to pass another vehicle in the marked zone.
- Read the centerline markings and any accompanying regulatory signs.
- Keep a safe following distance while waiting for a lawful, safe passing opportunity elsewhere.
How to recognize it
- Yellow pennant with a black border and NO PASSING ZONE lettering.
- Long triangular outline points horizontally to the right.
- Posted on the left side of the roadway at the beginning of the no-passing zone.
On the road
You approach a rise behind a slower vehicle and see the yellow pennant beside the left edge. Stay behind the vehicle through the no-passing zone even if a brief view over the rise looks clear.
Don’t confuse it with

Yield sign
YIELD is a red-and-white triangle pointing down and concerns right of way; this yellow sideways pennant concerns passing.
