Railroad Crossing Ahead Sign
What does it mean?
A railroad grade crossing is ahead. This round warning gives you advance notice, while the crossbuck, signals, gates, and any STOP or YIELD sign at the tracks control the crossing itself.
What to do when you see it
- Slow as needed, look in both directions, and listen for trains.
- Obey the crossing controls and never drive around a lowering or lowered gate.
- Enter only when there is enough room to clear all tracks completely.
How to recognize it
- Round yellow sign with a black border.
- A black X separates two letter Rs.
On the road
You see the round warning before a bend near a rail line. You reduce speed and check the crossing ahead, including whether traffic beyond it leaves enough room for your whole vehicle.
Don’t confuse it with
Railroad crossbuck
The round sign warns in advance; the white crossbuck marks the crossing itself.

Signal ahead
Signal Ahead has a traffic-light symbol inside a yellow diamond.
