Recreation and cultural-interest sign
What does it mean?
Brown guide signs identify recreational, scenic, historic or cultural destinations. The wording and symbol tell you the kind of place, while an arrow shows the route toward it.
What to do when you see it
- Read the destination label and direction arrow.
- Make the indicated turn only from a suitable lane and when safe.
- Continue watching for road and weather warnings beyond the turn.
How to recognize it
- Brown rectangular background.
- White lettering and destination symbol.
- This example shows Winter Sports, a snowflake and a right arrow.
On the road
You are looking for a winter recreation area and see the brown Winter Sports sign. Follow its right arrow when it is safe, then keep reading the signs along the access road.
Don’t confuse it with

Green destination guide sign
Green guide panels provide general route or destination information; brown identifies a recreation or cultural-interest destination.

Gas service sign
A blue pump sign identifies a motorist service rather than a recreation destination.
