Review all 24 questions with answers
  1. While practicing on a highway with a Washington CLP, which other license must the learner have in their possession?

Correct answer: A valid driver license.

A CLP is not a replacement for the learner’s valid driver license. Highway practice also requires an appropriately licensed accompanying CDL holder.

Source: RCW 46.25.052(3), first sentence. ↗

  2. Where must the accompanying CDL holder sit while directly supervising a CLP holder in a passenger vehicle?

Correct answer: Next to the driver, directly behind, or in the first row behind the driver.

Washington allows the passenger-vehicle supervisor directly behind or in the first row behind the driver, as an alternative to the front seat beside the learner. The supervisor must remain physically present and observe the learner directly.

Source: RCW 46.25.052(3), supervisor position and observation. ↗

  3. A learner has an S-endorsed CLP and a qualified CDL supervisor. May the learner drive the regular school route with pupils aboard?

Correct answer: No. The CLP does not authorize carrying pupils on the regular route.

An S-endorsed CLP permits supervised training, not normal school-bus passenger service. The law limits passengers to specified training, testing and official personnel.

Source: RCW 46.25.052(5)(b), S endorsement passenger limits. ↗

  4. A qualified supervisor has an H endorsement. Does this allow a Washington CLP holder to drive a commercial vehicle transporting hazardous materials?

Correct answer: No. A CLP does not authorize hazardous-material transport.

Washington expressly prohibits CLP holders from operating a commercial vehicle transporting hazardous materials. A supervisor’s endorsement does not remove this permit restriction.

    Source: RCW 46.25.052(7). ↗

  5. The X appears in the restrictions field of a Washington CLP. What does that X prohibit?

Correct answer: Operating a tank vehicle containing cargo.

The CLP restriction X means no cargo in a tank vehicle. Do not confuse a restriction with the full CDL endorsement X, which combines tank and hazardous-material endorsements.

    Source: RCW 46.25.052(6)(b); compare RCW 46.25.080(2)(b)(v). ↗

  6. Before a Washington CLP can be issued, which knowledge examination must an applicant pass?

Correct answer: The general knowledge exam for the intended commercial vehicle class.

The CLP statute requires the CDL general knowledge examination for the class the applicant operates or expects to operate. Endorsement exams apply separately when needed.

    Source: RCW 46.25.052(1)(b). ↗

  7. An applicant’s driver license is currently suspended in another state. Can Washington issue a CDL while that suspension remains?

Correct answer: No. An active suspension in any state prevents CDL issuance.

Washington may not issue a CDL while the applicant’s driver license is suspended, revoked or canceled in any state. It also prohibits issuance during disqualification from commercial driving.

    Source: RCW 46.25.060(3). ↗

  8. A driver has been a Washington resident for 30 days. Can they continue operating a commercial motor vehicle solely under their out-of-state CDL?

Correct answer: No. Washington law bars that operation after 30 days of residency.

RCW 46.25.070 bars a person who has been a Washington resident for 30 days from driving a commercial vehicle under another state’s CDL. Arrange the transfer and satisfy applicable requirements.

    Source: RCW 46.25.070(5). ↗

  9. DOL’s required Clearinghouse query shows an applicant is prohibited from operating a commercial motor vehicle. Does passing the general knowledge test alone make the applicant eligible for a Washington CLP?

Correct answer: No. The applicant must not be prohibited under the required query.

The CLP qualifications include not being prohibited from commercial driving based on the department’s Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse query. A test score does not override that requirement.

    Source: RCW 46.25.052(1)(d). ↗

  10. A Washington CDL has an L restriction. What does L restrict?

Correct answer: Commercial vehicles equipped with air brakes.

Under the current Washington code, L is the air-brake restriction. Do not use the pre-2017 K air-brake code found in older licensing tables.

    Source: RCW 46.25.080(2)(c)(iii). ↗

  11. A current Washington CDL has a K restriction. What operation does that restriction prohibit?

Correct answer: Interstate commercial motor vehicle operation.

K is the current interstate-operation restriction. Older Washington documents may use different letters, so use the current code and your actual credential.

    Source: RCW 46.25.080(2)(c)(ii). ↗

  12. On a Washington CDL, N is printed as a restriction rather than an endorsement. What does it restrict?

Correct answer: Class A and Class B passenger vehicles.

N in the restriction field excludes Class A and B passenger vehicles. N as an endorsement means tank vehicles; the field where the code appears changes its meaning.

    Source: RCW 46.25.080(2)(c)(v); compare (2)(b)(iv). ↗

  13. What does V on a Washington CDL indicate?

Correct answer: A medical variance has been issued for the driver.

V identifies a medical variance. It is not a blanket exemption from medical rules; the driver must satisfy the conditions and other requirements that apply.

    Source: RCW 46.25.080(2)(c)(vii). ↗

  14. A non-exempt commercial straight truck has a 30,000-pound GVWR and tows a unit with a 10,000-pound GVWR. Actual weights do not exceed the ratings. What is the minimum CDL class by weight?

    Correct answer: Class B.

The truck meets the Class B threshold and the towed unit does not exceed 10,000 pounds. Exactly 10,000 is not more than 10,000; a Class A CDL may also cover the lower class when otherwise properly qualified.

  15. A non-exempt commercial vehicle below Class A and B weight thresholds carries a select agent or toxin listed in 42 CFR Part 73. Which classification principle applies?

Correct answer: Class C can apply to any quantity of a listed agent or toxin.

The federal Class C definition includes transport of any quantity of a select agent or toxin listed in 42 CFR Part 73. A small vehicle is not automatically outside CDL requirements; hazardous-material authorization also matters.

Source: FMCSA Drivers, Classes of License and CLPs, Class C, select agents or toxins. ↗

  16. An X appears in the endorsements field of a full Washington CDL. What does it combine?

Correct answer: Tank-vehicle and hazardous-material endorsements.

The full CDL endorsement X combines tank-vehicle and hazardous-material authority. This is different from the CLP restriction X that prohibits cargo in a tank vehicle.

    Source: RCW 46.25.080(2)(b)(v). ↗

  17. A Washington CDL applicant self-certifies as excepted interstate. Does the word “excepted” remove Washington’s medical examiner certificate requirement for this category?

Correct answer: No. Washington still requires the medical examiner’s certificate.

Washington expressly includes excepted interstate applicants and holders in its medical examiner certificate requirement, along with nonexcepted interstate and nonexcepted intrastate. Do not assume a federal exception removes the state requirement.

    Source: RCW 46.25.075(2), categories (1)(a), (b), and (c). ↗

  18. A Washington CDL was downgraded for missing required medical certification. What does the statute provide as the route to restoring the commercial privilege?

Correct answer: Provide DOL the necessary certifications or medical variance information.

The statute permits restoration by providing the necessary certification or medical variance information. The driver must resolve the licensing status and applicable requirements before relying on the commercial privilege.

    Source: RCW 46.25.075(5)(c). ↗

  19. A first-time Class A applicant is subject to federal ELDT and has no exception. When must the required training be completed?

Correct answer: Before taking the CDL skills test.

An applicant subject to ELDT must complete the applicable training through a registered provider before the skills test. Studying a practice bank alone does not satisfy that training requirement.

Source: FMCSA Drivers, Entry-Level Driver Training paragraphs before Classes of License. ↗

  20. An applicant completes every online practice quiz but has not completed required behind-the-wheel ELDT for a first Class B CDL. Is the online quiz result sufficient?

Correct answer: No. The required theory and behind-the-wheel training still apply.

For applicants subject to Class B ELDT, both theory and behind-the-wheel training are required. This site provides knowledge practice, not a registered course completion or hands-on training certification.

Source: FMCSA TPR FAQ, What training must an entry-level driver complete?, Class B row. ↗

  21. Can federal ELDT theory and behind-the-wheel training come from separate providers?

Correct answer: Yes, if both providers are listed on the Training Provider Registry and report completion.

Federal ELDT allows separate theory and behind-the-wheel providers. Both must be on the registry and submit the driver-specific completion information; applicable state requirements also remain.

Source: FMCSA TPR FAQ, Can theory and BTW training be provided by separate training providers? ↗

  22. Under the federal ELDT theory curriculum, what overall minimum assessment score demonstrates the required understanding?

    Correct answer: 80 percent.

FMCSA specifies an overall minimum score of 80 percent on the theory assessment. This is an ELDT training assessment requirement, not a statement about the number of questions on a Washington licensing exam.

Source: FMCSA TPR FAQ, Are there specific hours of training mandated for the theory curricula? ↗

  23. A first-time P- or S-endorsement applicant is subject to ELDT. Which training components are required before the corresponding skills test?

Correct answer: Both theory and behind-the-wheel training.

The federal P and S curricula require theory plus behind-the-wheel training before the corresponding skills test. The H-endorsement theory-only rule does not apply to these endorsements.

Source: FMCSA TPR FAQ, What training must an entry-level driver complete?, P and S rows. ↗

  24. A driver received a Class B CDL before February 7, 2022 and wants to keep that same class, without adding a new covered endorsement. Does federal ELDT apply retroactively to that previously issued class?

Correct answer: No. Federal ELDT is not retroactive for that previously issued class.

The federal rule is not retroactive for a CDL or covered endorsement issued before February 7, 2022. That does not automatically exempt a later Class B-to-A upgrade or first P, S or H endorsement.
