  1. During the inspection, you point at a component and say its name, then move on. What is still missing?

Correct answer: Explain the defects or conditions you are checking for.

Credit requires identifying the item and explaining what you inspect it for. Merely naming or pointing at it does not demonstrate that you can recognize an unsafe condition.

  2. A training truck has extra labels naming inspection components that were not placed by its manufacturer. What does the supplement say about using it for the inspection test?

Correct answer: The added component labels make that vehicle unacceptable.

The supplement prohibits a test vehicle with components marked or labeled by someone other than the manufacturer. The permitted checklist does not authorize labels on the vehicle.

  3. Does completing the inspection items selected for a CDL test cover every federal vehicle-inspection requirement?

Correct answer: No; the test samples safety-critical inspection knowledge.

The supplement explicitly distinguishes its basic-knowledge evaluation from all federal inspection guidelines. Operating responsibilities extend beyond the items demonstrated on the test.

Source: Washington CDL skills supplement, September 9, 2022; 11M, Vehicle Inspection Test overview; physical PDF 4. ↗

  4. The wiper blades look secure and undamaged. What should you do to finish demonstrating their operation?

Correct answer: Operate the wipers and activate the windshield washers.

A visual blade check is not enough. Demonstrate smooth wiper operation and proper washer operation, and inspect for washer fluid.

Source: Washington CDL skills supplement, September 9, 2022; 11M.1.1, Wipers/ Washers; physical PDF 5. ↗

  5. You ask the examiner to help check exterior lights while you operate the controls. Who must specify the lights to be checked?

Correct answer: You must name the specific lights as you activate them.

The driver remains responsible for directing the exterior-light check. Tell the assisting examiner which lights to inspect; assistance does not excuse omitted lamps.

Source: Washington CDL skills supplement, September 9, 2022; 11M.4, Lights Operations Check; physical PDF 8. ↗

  6. During the engine-area inspection, what should you explain about checking critical fluid levels?

Correct answer: With the engine off, identify check points and proper levels.

Identify the appropriate dipstick or sight glass and the add/full range with the engine off. The listed fluids include engine oil, coolant, power steering and hydraulic brake fluid where applicable.

Source: Washington CDL skills supplement, September 9, 2022; 11M.5.1, Critical Fluid Levels; physical PDF 8. ↗

  7. A bus cushion looks intact but is loose on its seat frame. What should the inspection identify?

Correct answer: An attachment defect, even though the cushion looks sound.

Inspect both seat-frame attachment to the floor and cushion attachment to the frame. Surface condition alone does not establish that a passenger seat is secure.

Source: Washington CDL skills supplement, September 9, 2022; 11M.2, Passenger Seating; physical PDF 7. ↗

  8. Two test vehicles have different hydraulic power-assist systems. Which inspection procedure should you demonstrate?

Correct answer: The procedure specified for the vehicle you are testing in.

Hydraulic systems and ignition/engine requirements vary. Explain and demonstrate the manufacturer's procedure for the actual vehicle, including applicable warning and power-assist checks.

  9. Which set of exercises appears in Washington's updated basic-control supplement?

Correct answer: Forward stop, straight backing, forward offset and reverse offset.

The updated supplement lists forward stop, straight-line backing, forward offset tracking and reverse offset backing in that order. Use it for sections 11 and 12 rather than the older main-guide exercises.

  10. During forward offset tracking, you reverse to improve your position. What is that movement called for scoring?

Correct answer: A back-up during the forward-moving exercise.

Backing during forward offset tracking is scored as a back-up. This is distinct from pulling forward during one of the backing exercises.

    Source: Washington CDL skills supplement, September 9, 2022; 12M.1, Back-ups; physical PDF 18. ↗

  11. Only a door mirror extends across the exercise boundary; no other vehicle part touches or crosses it. Which listed exception applies?

Correct answer: The supplement excludes door and fender mirrors from encroachments.

The encroachment definition excludes door and fender mirrors and certain high unique components. This scoring exception is not permission to strike objects or disregard safety.

Source: Washington CDL skills supplement, September 9, 2022; 12M.1, Encroachments; physical PDF 18. ↗

  12. During a backing exercise, you stop and open the driver's door to judge clearance but remain in the seat. Does that count as a look?

Correct answer: Yes; opening the door is counted even without stepping out.

Opening the door or moving from the seated position counts as a look. The supplement does not require you to step onto the ground before it is counted.

Source: Washington CDL skills supplement, September 9, 2022; 12M.1, Looks; physical PDF 18. ↗

  13. You are allowed to get out of a truck for a backing-position check. What should you do before and during the exit?

Correct answer: Set the parking brake, select neutral and use three-point contact.

Secure the vehicle with the parking brake and neutral before leaving. Face the truck and maintain three points of contact when entering or exiting.

Source: Washington CDL skills supplement, September 9, 2022; 12M.1, Looks; physical PDF 18. ↗

  14. In the forward-stop exercise, which part should you use to judge the final stopping position?

Correct answer: The frontmost part identified by the examiner, within the stop box.

The examiner identifies the frontmost relevant part. Stop with it in the box without passing the box; the supplement has an exception for specified high unique parts.

Source: Washington CDL skills supplement, September 9, 2022; 12M.2.1, Exercise 1 - Forward Stop; physical PDF 19. ↗

  15. How far should you back in the straight-line exercise before declaring it complete?

Correct answer: Until the front has cleared the far end's last cones.

The specified final position requires the front of the vehicle to clear the last set of cones at the far end. Rear clearance alone is not the completion point.

Source: Washington CDL skills supplement, September 9, 2022; 12M.2.2, Exercise 2 - Straight Line Backing; physical PDF 19. ↗

  16. What does the forward-offset exercise allow for backing up or getting out?

Correct answer: No free back-ups and no exiting during the exercise.

Forward offset tracking has no free back-ups, and exiting is not permitted. These rules differ from the backing exercises' pull-up and look allowances.

  17. You must stop before a turn at a marked stop line and crosswalk. Where should the vehicle stop?

Correct answer: Behind the stop line without entering the crosswalk.

The road-test guidance calls for a complete stop behind the stop line or crosswalk, before entering the traveled part of the intersection. Do not let the vehicle roll.

Source: Washington Commercial Driver Guide, N/10/20; 13.3.1, Turns; physical PDF 165, printed 13-3. ↗

  18. You are stopped and waiting for a safe chance to turn. How should the front wheels be aimed during the wait?

    Correct answer: Straight ahead.

The guide's turn procedure keeps the front wheels straight while stopped and waiting. Keep the vehicle stationary and recheck traffic before beginning the turn.

Source: Washington Commercial Driver Guide, N/10/20; 13.3.1, Turns; physical PDF 165, printed 13-3. ↗

  19. After starting straight ahead from a stop, you need a gear change in the intersection. What does the guide require?

Correct answer: Shift smoothly without grinding gears or coasting through.

Necessary gear changes after starting from a stopped position are addressed separately from shifting during a turn. Maintain control without grinding, clashing or coasting.

Source: Washington Commercial Driver Guide, N/10/20; 13.3.2, Intersections; physical PDF 165, printed 13-3. ↗

  20. On a normal planned expressway exit, where does the guide call for smooth deceleration?

Correct answer: In the exit lane, continuing appropriately along the ramp.

Make the traffic checks and signal, then decelerate smoothly in the exit lane. Continue controlling speed on the ramp, within the lane markings and with adequate spacing.

Source: Washington Commercial Driver Guide, N/10/20; 13.3.5, Expressway or Rural/Limited Access Highway; physical PDF 166, printed 13-4. ↗

  21. After stopping safely for the roadside demonstration, how should you secure the vehicle?

Correct answer: Apply the parking brake, select neutral or park and use hazards.

The procedure calls for the parking brake, neutral or park, and four-way flashers after canceling the turn signal. Do not rely on keeping a foot on a pedal to hold the stopped vehicle.

Source: Washington Commercial Driver Guide, N/10/20; 13.3.6, Roadside Stop/Start; physical PDF 166, printed 13-4. ↗

  22. How should you prepare for a curve during ordinary, planned driving on the road test?

Correct answer: Reduce speed before entry so braking or shifting is not needed inside.

Set an appropriate speed before the curve, stay in your lane and continue traffic checks. This is planned curve technique, not a prohibition on responding to an unexpected hazard.

Source: Washington Commercial Driver Guide, N/10/20; 13.3.7, Curve; physical PDF 166, printed 13-4. ↗

  23. Before a clear railroad crossing, how should you plan any necessary gear change?

Correct answer: Make it before entering so you need not shift on the tracks.

The guide directs drivers to slow and make necessary gear changes before the crossing. Do not stop or change gears while any part of the vehicle is in the crossing.

Source: Washington Commercial Driver Guide, N/10/20; 13.3.8, Railroad Crossing; physical PDF 167, printed 13-5. ↗

  24. Your chosen gear makes the engine labor at too low a speed. What should proper gear use avoid?

Correct answer: Lugging the engine as well as excessive revving.

Select gears appropriate to the vehicle and situation so the engine is neither lugged nor over-revved. Smooth control matters; staying in an unsuitable gear is not good technique.

Source: Washington Commercial Driver Guide, N/10/20; 13.3.11(b), Gear Usage; physical PDF 168, printed 13-6. ↗
