  1. A loaded tanker has a confirmed cargo leak. The delivery point is close. What should you do?

Correct answer: Keep it out of service for hauling and follow the cargo's safe response procedure.

Do not transport liquid or gas in a leaking tank. Secure the situation and follow the applicable response and reporting procedures; closeness to the destination is not a reason to keep hauling.

  2. During a manhole-cover inspection, which finding requires attention before the tanker is used?

Correct answer: A missing gasket or a cover that does not close correctly.

The gasket and proper closure are part of the containment check. A cover resting over the opening is not sufficient if its seal or closing mechanism is defective.

  3. Your tanker has vapor-recovery equipment and grounding/bonding cables. What does their presence require during inspection?

Correct answer: Check that the fitted systems and cables work as required.

The guide lists these as special-purpose items to check when fitted. Presence alone is not evidence of working condition; follow the applicable equipment and cargo procedures.

  4. What makes a tanker's high center of gravity important when planning a turn?

Correct answer: A large share of its weight is high above the road, increasing rollover risk.

A high center of gravity makes the vehicle more top-heavy. Choose a safe low speed and smooth path; the enclosed shape of a tank does not make its load immune to rollover forces.

  5. A tanker has stopped on ice near an intersection. Which remaining hazard does liquid surge create?

Correct answer: The liquid's movement may shove the stopped vehicle toward the intersection.

The guide gives this as a reason for special caution with a partial liquid load. Low tire traction can allow residual cargo movement to push a vehicle that has already stopped.

  6. Does having baffles make sharp steering safe with a liquid tanker?

Correct answer: No; side-to-side surge can remain and contribute to rollover.

The guide distinguishes control of forward/backward surge from lateral movement. Baffles are not permission to corner abruptly or ignore the tanker's high center of gravity.

  7. Can a driver use one fixed outage amount for every liquid cargo?

Correct answer: No; the required expansion space depends on the particular liquid.

Different liquids expand differently. Determine the appropriate outage for the actual product and conditions; this bank does not prescribe one percentage for every cargo.

  8. In an ordinary planned stop with a liquid load, which technique helps manage surge?

Correct answer: Brake early and smoothly, maintaining steady pressure rather than releasing too soon.

Allow extra following space and begin slowing well ahead. Smooth, steady control reduces the sudden liquid movement associated with harsh starting, braking and premature brake release.

  9. In the endorsement field of a Washington CDL, what does X represent?

Correct answer: Combined tank-vehicle and hazardous-materials endorsements.

In the CDL endorsement field, X combines tank and hazardous-materials qualifications. Do not confuse an endorsement with a differently defined permit restriction.

  10. A CMV carries loaded tanks each rated at exactly 119 gallons, with no larger tank. Their total rated capacity exceeds 1,000 gallons. Does that fact alone satisfy both stated tank-capacity thresholds?

Correct answer: No; the individual threshold is more than 119 gallons.

The two conditions are separate. Exceeding the total threshold does not turn an exactly 119-gallon tank into one rated above 119 gallons. Other requirements may still apply.
