Review all 20 questions with answers
  1. You approach occupied cars parked at the right curb. How should you plan your motorcycle's space?

Correct answer: Allow room for doors or a pullout while also accounting for oncoming traffic.

Doors, pedestrians and cars pulling from the curb can enter your path. Select speed and a lane position that leave room, without creating a conflict with oncoming vehicles.

  2. You will slow for a driveway where following traffic may not expect it. If time and conditions permit, what helps communicate that slowdown?

Correct answer: Flash the brake light before the main reduction in speed.

An early brake-light warning can help others notice an unexpected slowdown. It supplements signaling, observation and a controlled reduction in speed; it is not abrupt brake-checking.

  3. On a straight, suitable road, you are the third rider in a staggered group, using the leader's left-side track. What interval from that leader does the Wyoming motorcycle handbook describe?

Correct answer: At least two seconds, increasing the space when conditions require.

The Wyoming motorcycle handbook places the second rider one second behind in the other track and the third two seconds behind the leader in the same track. Increase spacing when conditions require; staggering does not remove following distance.

  4. An experienced leader is organizing a group that includes new riders. Where does the Wyoming motorcycle handbook recommend placing those beginners?

Correct answer: Just behind the leader, where their pace and needs can be considered.

Placing beginners just behind the leader helps the group set a pace they can manage. Do not place them where they feel compelled to exceed their skill to catch up.

  5. A rider who has been drinking proposes coffee and a cold shower before riding. What is the correct assessment?

Correct answer: Neither remedy removes alcohol from the body faster; allow time and do not ride impaired.

The handbook explains that coffee, showers and exercise do not speed alcohol elimination. Feeling more awake is not proof of fitness to ride; choose transportation that does not require impaired riding.

  6. A full tank bag restricts movement of the handlebars. The total load is below the motorcycle's weight rating. Is that enough to make the load acceptable?

Correct answer: No; repack or reposition it so the handlebars and controls remain unobstructed.

A load can be within the weight limit and still interfere with safe operation. A tank bag must not obstruct the handlebars or controls.

  7. A beginner can barely touch the ground on a motorcycle and struggles to reach its controls. What should guide the choice of a training motorcycle?

Correct answer: Choose one that fits the rider and allows easy control operation.

The handbook says the motorcycle should fit, with the rider's feet reaching the ground while seated. Familiar, accessible controls and a suitable fit make basic control easier.

  8. You borrow a motorcycle with linked brakes after learning on separate brake systems. What should you do before assuming how its controls act?

Correct answer: Read its owner's manual and learn the system's operation before entering traffic.

Integrated systems can apply front and rear brakes together from a control. Consult the owner's manual for that motorcycle's actual system instead of assuming all controls work alike.

  9. On a clear day, a rider thinks the headlight is unnecessary because the road is easy to see. What safety purpose does the manual give for keeping it on?

Correct answer: It helps other road users notice the motorcycle.

The daytime benefit is conspicuity: helping others detect the smaller motorcycle. This is riding advice, not a claim that a headlight guarantees recognition or right-of-way.

Source: WYDOT currently linked Motorcycle Rules of the Road, August 2021, Headlight; printed/physical PDF page 73. Body page numbers are used, not the two-page-early contents references. Matched September 29, 2026. ↗

  10. A motorcycle's drive chain breaks, leaving no drive to the rear wheel, but the wheel is still rolling. What should the rider do?

Correct answer: Close the throttle and bring the motorcycle to a controlled stop in a safe place.

A broken chain can suddenly remove drive and can also create a skid hazard. When the wheel remains rolling, close the throttle and brake to a safe stop instead of trying to continue.

Source: WYDOT currently linked Motorcycle Rules of the Road, August 2021, Chain problems; printed/physical PDF page 85. Body page numbers are used, not the two-page-early contents references. Matched September 29, 2026. ↗

  11. Rain grooves cause a mild wandering sensation, but no mechanical fault is evident. What response is generally appropriate?

Correct answer: Stay relaxed, keep a steady speed and ride straight.

A mild weave on grooves or grating is generally not itself dangerous. Fighting it with abrupt changes can create a greater hazard. This is distinct from a mechanical wobble requiring a safe stop.

Source: WYDOT currently linked Motorcycle Rules of the Road, August 2021, Grooves and gratings; printed/physical PDF page 83. Body page numbers are used, not the two-page-early contents references. Matched September 29, 2026. ↗

  12. A Wyoming driver has an ordinary Class C license and wants full ordinary motorcycle privileges, not just a learner permit. Which classification is needed?

Correct answer: Class M motorcycle privileges added to the license.

Wyoming Class C excludes motorcycles. Class M is the motorcycle classification and may be added to another class of license.

  13. A Wyoming resident holds Class M as the only class on the license. Does it authorize driving an ordinary passenger car?

Correct answer: No. A motorcycle-only Class M license does not supply Class C car privileges.

Class M may be issued alone to a person not licensed for another classification. Motorcycle privileges do not themselves confer the distinct Class C privilege.

  14. An applicant wants Wyoming’s ordinary motorcycle instruction permit, without using a specialist hardship pathway. What minimum age applies?

Correct answer: At least 15 years old.

The motorcycle instruction-permit subsection permits an application at age 15 after the required written examination and adequate visual acuity.

  15. A Wyoming applicant passes the motorcycle written examination and vision requirement but has not passed a motorcycle driving test. Which motorcycle instruction permit may be issued under that route?

Correct answer: A 90-day motorcycle instruction permit, without a passenger.

The statute distinguishes a 90-day learning permit after the written/vision requirements from the one-year instruction permit available after also passing a driving test. Neither permits a passenger.

Source: Current Wyoming Statutes, official Title 31 compilation, W.S. 31-7-110(b), initial motorcycle instruction permit; physical PDF page 290. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  16. What additional test does Wyoming’s motorcycle-permit statute require before the one-year instruction permit may be issued instead of the 90-day route?

Correct answer: Pass a motorcycle driving test as well.

Passing the motorcycle driving test permits the separate one-year instruction route. It remains an instruction permit with no passenger, not an unrestricted license.

Source: Current Wyoming Statutes, official Title 31 compilation, W.S. 31-7-110(b), one-year motorcycle instruction permit; physical PDF page 290. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  17. A Wyoming motorcycle instruction-permit holder wants to carry an adult who has years of riding experience. Does that experience create a passenger exception?

Correct answer: No. The motorcycle instruction-permit routes prohibit a passenger.

Both the 90-day and one-year motorcycle instruction permits prohibit passengers. Passenger equipment or the proposed passenger’s experience does not remove the permit restriction.

Source: Current Wyoming Statutes, official Title 31 compilation, W.S. 31-7-110(b), both permit routes; physical PDF page 290. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  18. A 16-year-old Wyoming motorcycle instruction-permit holder wants to ride at midnight solely to meet friends. No statutory work, school, medical or other listed exception applies. Is that ordinary social trip allowed?

Correct answer: No. The under-17 motorcycle permit is subject to the nighttime restriction.

The motorcycle-permit subsection applies restricted hours to holders under 17. The 5 a.m.–11 p.m. framework has the specifically incorporated medical, work, school and similar exceptions; an ordinary social trip is not one.

  19. A 16-year-old Wyoming motorcycle learner seeks an intermediate motorcycle permit. What practice record must the parent or guardian certify under the statute?

Correct answer: At least 50 actual driving hours, including at least 10 at night.

The intermediate-permit subsection includes motorcycle applicants holding the motorcycle instruction permit. It requires 50 hours, including 10 at night, certified by a parent or guardian; nighttime practice must still comply with the applicable permit rules and exceptions.

Source: Current Wyoming Statutes, official Title 31 compilation, W.S. 31-7-110(g), beginning physical 291 and continuing physical 292; physical PDF page 291. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  20. A Wyoming rider has advanced from a motorcycle instruction permit to an intermediate motorcycle permit. May the rider now carry one teenage friend?

Correct answer: No. The intermediate motorcycle permit still prohibits every passenger.

The statute gives intermediate motorcycle permits their own no-passenger rule. Do not transfer the limited passenger allowance for an intermediate car permit to a motorcycle.
