  1. A small group includes a rider with much less experience. Where does the manual recommend placing that rider?

Correct answer: Near the front, just behind the leader.

Putting beginners behind the leader lets more experienced riders watch them. Plan the route and pace so nobody feels pushed to ride unsafely to catch up.

  2. Three riders use a staggered formation on an open highway. The first and third riders use the left part of the lane. What interval does Alaska's manual give between them?

Correct answer: A normal four-second gap.

The staggered formation does not remove following-space needs. The Alaska manual gives a four-second interval between riders using the same part of the lane.

  3. A group riding in staggered formation approaches a series of curves. What formation does the manual recommend?

Correct answer: Single file, with appropriate spacing.

Single file gives each rider more room to choose a safe line through curves. The manual also recommends it for turns and for entering or leaving a highway.

  4. A motorcycle group approaches a slower vehicle and a legal passing opportunity. How should the riders pass?

Correct answer: One at a time, each waiting for an independently safe opportunity and return space.

The leader's safe opening does not guarantee one for every following rider. Each rider must assess traffic and have enough space to return safely before the next pass.

  5. A rider has been drinking and suggests strong coffee before riding home. What is the sound response?

Correct answer: Coffee does not restore alcohol-impaired judgment or riding skills; arrange a sober way home.

Feeling more awake is not the same as being unimpaired. Coffee, exercise, and cold showers do not reverse alcohol's effects; keep drinking separate from riding.

  6. You start taking a cold medicine before a planned motorcycle trip. What should you determine before riding?

Correct answer: Whether it can cause drowsiness, dizziness, or other effects that impair riding.

Common nonprescription medicines can impair the abilities needed for riding. Check the medicine's effects and warnings, and do not ride while impaired.

  7. After a long stretch in cold wind, you notice fatigue and declining concentration. What should you do?

Correct answer: Stop safely for a rest and adjust the remaining trip to your condition.

Wind, cold, and rain accelerate fatigue, and fatigue reduces motorcycle control. Protective clothing, realistic distances, and frequent breaks help prevent it.
