Alaska Speed, space and defensive driving mix

On a dry road in ordinary conditions, which following interval does Alaska's handbook recommend as a practical starting point?

Correct answer: At least four seconds behind the vehicle ahead.

The handbook recommends the four-second method, while separately noting a two-second regulatory minimum. Adjust the gap upward when conditions require more room.

You begin towing a trailer on a wet road. How should you change the handbook's ordinary four-second following interval?

Correct answer: Increase it to six seconds or more.

The handbook calls for six seconds or more when towing or when the surface is wet or slippery. Both conditions can make a short stopping gap less forgiving.

You are driving below the maximum speed on a two-lane road outside an urban area, with five vehicles immediately behind. What should you do at a safe opportunity?

Correct answer: Pull over safely to let the following vehicles pass.

Alaska's handbook identifies a duty to pull over safely when five or more vehicles are immediately behind on a rural two-lane roadway. Do not stop where pulling over would be unsafe.

Fog reduces how far ahead you can see, although the posted limit has not changed. How should you choose your speed?

Correct answer: Slow enough to stop within the clear distance you can see ahead.

A posted maximum is not a safe speed for every condition. Reduced visibility requires a speed that allows you to stop within the available clear distance.

Under favorable conditions, what is Alaska's stated maximum in a residential district when no different limit is posted?

Correct answer: 25 mph.

The handbook lists 25 mph for an unposted residential district under favorable conditions. A posted limit or unsafe conditions can require a different speed.

During a long drive, you notice repeated drowsiness and difficulty staying alert. What should you do?

Correct answer: Stop driving at a safe place and take a break.

The manual directs drivers to quit driving when drowsy. Recognize the warning and stop safely instead of trying to complete more miles while alertness is falling.
