  1. A Connecticut resident has a valid car license but neither a motorcycle endorsement nor a motorcycle learner's permit. May they ride an ordinary two-wheel motorcycle on public roads?

Correct answer: No; the car license alone does not authorize that motorcycle operation.

An ordinary motorcycle requires the appropriate motorcycle authorization. A valid learner's permit allows restricted practice; otherwise the driver needs the M endorsement.

  2. A Connecticut license displays M together with restriction 3. What does this mean for a borrowed two-wheel motorcycle?

Correct answer: That endorsement is restricted to three-wheel motorcycles and does not authorize this two-wheel motorcycle.

The M endorsement can authorize two- or three-wheel motorcycles, but restriction 3 limits it to three-wheel operation. Do not treat the restricted endorsement as an unrestricted M.

  3. A 30-year-old car driver applying for a first Connecticut motorcycle endorsement has passed the knowledge and vision tests. What training requirement still applies?

Correct answer: Complete a DMV-approved novice motorcycle safety course.

For a first motorcycle endorsement, adulthood and car-driving experience do not replace the approved novice training requirement. The course includes classroom and motorcycle skills training.

  4. A 17-year-old who already holds a valid Connecticut driver's license applies for a motorcycle learner's permit. Which additional consent document does DMV require?

Correct answer: A notarized Certificate of Parental Consent, Form 2-D.

DMV lists the notarized Form 2-D for motorcycle permit applicants under 18. A car license is also required, but it does not remove this consent requirement.

  5. According to Connecticut DMV's motorcycle permit guidance, what is the normal permit term and same-calendar-year renewal allowance?

Correct answer: 60 days, with one renewal for another 60 days in the same calendar year.

The motorcycle permit is a short-term credential. DMV describes a 60-day term and one additional 60-day renewal within the same calendar year. Check the actual expiration date; this is not an automatic extension.

  6. Which proposed practice ride is consistent with Connecticut's motorcycle learner-permit route and time restrictions?

Correct answer: A daytime trip on a non-limited-access road entirely within Connecticut.

The permit restrictions prohibit riding at night, on a limited-access highway, or out of state. Other restrictions, including helmets and no passengers, also apply.

  7. A 35-year-old is riding under a Connecticut motorcycle learner's permit. Does being over 21 remove the permit helmet requirement?

Correct answer: No; motorcycle permit holders must wear compliant protective headgear regardless of age.

The all-age permit helmet condition is separate from the general under-21 rule. Wear properly secured compliant motorcycle headgear on every permit ride.

  8. An adult Connecticut motorcycle permit holder wants an experienced rider to sit behind them and give instruction. Is that permitted?

Correct answer: No; a motorcycle learner's permit does not allow passengers.

The permit prohibits carrying a passenger. The passenger's experience or age does not create an instructor exception in the published permit restrictions.

  9. Before a Connecticut motorcycle learner-permit ride, which driving credentials should be in your possession?

Correct answer: Both the motorcycle learner's permit and your driver's license.

The motorcycle manual requires possession of both the permit and driver's license while operating under the permit. Do not confuse course paperwork with the credential authorizing road practice.

  10. A 25-year-old received a first Connecticut M endorsement two weeks ago. The motorcycle has proper passenger equipment. May they carry a friend now?

Correct answer: No; the initial new-endorsement passenger restriction is still in effect.

Connecticut DMV describes a passenger ban for the first 90 days after an adult receives the endorsement; CGS 14-289a(a) expresses the period as three months. Two weeks is inside either description.

Source: Connecticut DMV Get your motorcycle learner's permit; Restrictions for new motorcycle drivers, drivers age 18 and older; CGS 14-289a(a) says three months. Scenario deliberately avoids an exact calendar-boundary calculation. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  11. A 17-year-old has held a Connecticut motorcycle endorsement for four months. What motorcycle passenger restriction still applies?

Correct answer: No passengers until six months after obtaining the endorsement.

For riders age 16 or 17, the motorcycle passenger restriction lasts six months after endorsement. This differs from the adult period and from car-license passenger rules.

Source: Connecticut DMV Get your motorcycle learner's permit; Restrictions for new motorcycle drivers, drivers age 16 and 17; corroborated by CGS 14-289a(a). Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  12. A fully endorsed 20-year-old rides an ordinary two-wheel motorcycle in Connecticut. Which helmet rule currently applies?

Correct answer: A helmet meeting the federal motorcycle-helmet standard is required.

The age threshold changed effective October 1, 2025. Operators under 21 must wear compliant protective headgear; an endorsement or windshield does not remove that duty.

Source: Connecticut General Statutes 2026 Supplement, 14-289g(a), amended by P.A. 25-65 section 19; DMV September 30, 2025 announcement confirms October 1, 2025 effective date. Supersedes stale under-18 sentence in manual physical page 5. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗
