Review all 20 questions with answers
  1. An applicant meets the other conditions for Georgia's ordinary CDL application process. At what minimum age may they apply?

    Correct answer: 18 years old.

Georgia's ordinary CDL application minimum is 18. Restrictions apply before 21; reaching the application age does not authorize unrestricted interstate driving.

Source: Apply for a Commercial (CDL) License, opening age statement and Basic Requirements, minimum-age and Georgia-only restriction bullets. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  2. A 19-year-old receives a Georgia CDL through the ordinary process. What geographic restriction does DDS place on the license?

Correct answer: Driving in Georgia only.

DDS restricts ordinary CDL holders under 21 to Georgia-only intrastate operation. A nearby state or older co-driver does not remove that restriction; other trip and licensing requirements still apply.

Source: Apply for a Commercial (CDL) License, Basic Requirements, age 18-to-21 Georgia-only restriction. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  3. The age-based Georgia-only restriction remains on a driver's CDL after their 21st birthday. What does DDS direct the driver to do to have it removed?

Correct answer: Visit a DDS Customer Service Center.

DDS directs the driver to visit a Customer Service Center on or after the 21st birthday for removal. This concerns the age-based Georgia-only restriction, not unrelated medical, vehicle or endorsement restrictions.

Source: Apply for a Commercial (CDL) License, Basic Requirements, on-or-after-21st-birthday Customer Service Center instruction. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  4. For Georgia's ordinary resident commercial-permit application, which existing driver credential does DDS require?

Correct answer: A valid regular Georgia driver's license.

The ordinary Georgia CLP process requires a valid regular Georgia driver's license. An ID card, out-of-state learner permit or school certificate is not that underlying driver credential; transfer and special-waiver routes are separate.

Source: Apply for a Commercial Permit (Class AP or BP), Basic Requirements, valid regular Georgia Driver's License bullet. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  5. What validity period does DDS state for a newly issued Georgia commercial learner's permit under the rule in effect since July 1, 2021?

    Correct answer: 365 days.

DDS states that CLPs issued on or after July 1, 2021 are valid for 365 days. This identifies the permit term; it does not promise an additional renewal period or excuse other permit conditions.

Source: Apply for a Commercial Permit (Class AP or BP), Basic Requirements, CLP issued on/after July 1, 2021 validity note. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  6. Without an applicable waiting-period waiver, how long must a first-time CDL applicant hold the initially issued CLP before taking the skills test?

Correct answer: At least 14 days.

The skills test cannot be taken during the first 14 days after initial CLP issuance. Earlier study, knowledge testing or training does not start that holding period; all other testing prerequisites still apply.

Source: 49 CFR 383.25(e), first 14 days after initial CLP issuance; corroborated by DDS Road Test Appointments, Commercial (CDL) Road Test requirements. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  7. A Georgia CLP holder practices in a two-seat truck on a public road. Which arrangement meets the CLP supervision rule?

Correct answer: An authorized CDL driver with the proper class and endorsements supervises from the next seat.

For this truck practice, the supervisor must have the proper valid CDL and endorsements, be authorized for the trip, sit beside the learner and provide direct observation and supervision. Passenger vehicles have a separately specified seating arrangement.

Source: 49 CFR 383.25(a)(1), appropriate CDL group/endorsements, trip authorization, next-seat presence and direct supervision; other conditions in (a)(2)-(6). Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  8. Assuming no exception applies, which change to an existing CDL is covered by the federal Entry-Level Driver Training rule?

Correct answer: Moving from a Class B CDL to a Class A CDL.

The ELDT rule specifically covers upgrading Class B to Class A. Renewal, address replacement and adding a doubles/triples endorsement are not that covered upgrade; they may have separate requirements.

Source: About the ELDT Regulations, Class B-to-Class A upgrade bullet; nonretroactivity and skills-test-exception paragraphs. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  9. An existing CDL holder seeks a first hazardous-materials endorsement and is subject to ELDT. When must the required H training be completed?

Correct answer: Before taking the H endorsement knowledge test.

For an applicant subject to first-H ELDT, the required training comes before the H knowledge test. This timing does not replace the other endorsement or security requirements.

Source: Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT), first-time S/P/H scope and training-before-H-Endorsement-Knowledge-Test bullet. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  10. A driver obtained Class B in 2020 and is renewing that same credential, with no upgrade or new endorsement. What does the federal ELDT rule itself require?

Correct answer: No new ELDT solely for that pre-2022 Class B credential.

ELDT is not retroactive to a Class B credential issued before February 7, 2022. That limited exemption does not waive ordinary renewal requirements or training that a later covered upgrade or new endorsement may trigger.

Source: About the ELDT Regulations, nonretroactivity for CDLs and S/P/H endorsements issued before February 7, 2022. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  11. A first-time Class B applicant must complete ELDT. Which provider listing should the applicant use to find eligible training?

Correct answer: FMCSA's Training Provider Registry.

DDS directs ELDT applicants to find a training provider through FMCSA's Training Provider Registry. A car-school listing, employer's CDL staff or generic completion certificate does not establish the provider's eligibility for the required training.

Source: Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT), paragraph directing drivers to the Training Provider Registry; first-time Class A/B scope. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  12. A truck-trailer combination has a GCWR of exactly 26,001 pounds, and the trailer's GVWR is 10,001 pounds. No CDL exception applies. What is its CDL vehicle group?

Correct answer: Group A, combination vehicle.

Group A begins at a combination GCWR of 26,001 pounds when the towed vehicle's GVWR exceeds 10,000 pounds. Both conditions are met. The current federal wording includes exactly 26,001 pounds.

Source: 49 CFR 383.91(a)(1)-(3), Group A inclusive GCWR boundary and towed-GVWR condition; Group B/C definitions for comparison. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  13. A Georgia Class A CDL holder has no passenger endorsement. They want to operate a bus that requires Class B and a passenger endorsement. Is Class A alone sufficient?

Correct answer: No; the required passenger endorsement is still needed.

A Class A driver may operate a Group B vehicle only with any required endorsements. The higher vehicle class does not automatically grant passenger authority, and surrendering Class A for Class B is not the solution.

Source: 49 CFR 383.91(c)(1), Group A operation of Group B/C with requisite endorsements; corroborated by 383.93(b)(2), passenger vehicles. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  14. An applicant fails the air-brake knowledge component but otherwise qualifies for an appropriate CDL. If that CDL is issued, what must it show?

Correct answer: A restriction against operating CMVs with air brakes.

Failure of the air-brake knowledge component requires an air-brake restriction on a CLP or CDL if issued. It covers systems operating fully or partly on the air-brake principle; it is not a passenger or transmission restriction.

Source: 49 CFR 383.95(a)(1)-(2), air-brake knowledge failure, restriction if issued, and full/partial air-brake definition. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  15. Which three components remain in Georgia's statewide modernized CDL skills test?

Correct answer: Vehicle inspection, basic control skills and an on-road test.

DDS's June 2026 announcement retains vehicle inspection, basic control skills and the road test. Modernization updated inspection and basic control; knowledge, vision and medical requirements are not substitutes for those skills-test components.

Source: June 16, 2026 release, paragraph beginning The Modernized CDL Skills Test remains in three parts. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  16. Which exercise is part of the basic-control test named in DDS's current statewide modernization announcement?

    Correct answer: Reverse offset backing.

DDS lists reverse offset backing in the modernized basic-control test, along with forward stop, straight-line backing and forward offset tracking.

Source: June 16, 2026 release, Basic Control Skills paragraph listing forward stop, straight-line backing, forward offset tracking and reverse offset backing. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  17. What aid does DDS expressly allow applicants to use for the order of a modernized CDL vehicle inspection?

Correct answer: The inspection checklist provided in the CDL Study Guide.

DDS permits the Study Guide's checklist to help with inspection order. It is an organizational aid, not a replacement for demonstrating inspection knowledge to the examiner.

Source: June 16, 2026 release, new Vehicle Inspection paragraph, checklist provided in the CDL Study Guide for order of inspection. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  18. What minimum percentage must an applicant answer correctly on each required general or endorsement CDL knowledge test?

    Correct answer: 80 percent.

The federal standard is at least 80 percent on each general and endorsement knowledge test. It is not an average across separate tests and does not establish Georgia's question count or a skills-test percentage.

Source: Knowledge & Skills Test subsection, general and endorsement knowledge passing-standard paragraph. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  19. After failing a Georgia CDL knowledge test, what minimum waiting period does DDS state before trying again?

    Correct answer: Two days.

DDS lists at least two days for a CDL knowledge or road-skills retest. The page's separate non-commercial intervals do not replace this CDL-specific rule.

Source: Retesting Policy, separately labeled CDL retesting policy immediately after the general non-commercial policy. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  20. A Georgia CDL driver who is required to maintain medical certification receives a new certificate from a listed medical examiner. How does it reach DDS for the medical-record update?

Correct answer: The examiner submits to FMCSA, which transmits it electronically to DDS.

Under Georgia's current NRII process, the examiner reports through the National Registry and FMCSA transmits the certificate to DDS electronically. This concerns a required medical-certificate record update, not medical eligibility or documents requested separately for a road test.

Source: Opening June 18, 2025 notice and How do I submit CDL Medical Certificate... subsection, examiner/FMCSA electronic transmission and no direct paper submission. Current primary source reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

Georgia CDL licensing supplement

20 administrative study questions. This separate study quiz is not an official exam or a skills-test substitute. Its subjects may also appear on official knowledge tests.

Requirements depend on the class, endorsements, operation and applicant. Check the current Georgia application requirements before arranging a test. A practice score does not establish eligibility.
