Iowa alcohol impairment and testing rules: sources and limits

5 original questions with explanations and saved review. The ordinary adult alcohol threshold, impairment below that threshold, the separate under-21 rule, preliminary screening and a properly requested formal breath test.

Read each question’s conditions carefully. Requirements can differ by age, license and vehicle use. How we built this practice.

How we built this practice

The actual operative Iowa Code 2026 chapter 321J clauses, relevant exceptions and displayed histories were read October 1, 2026. The PDF was generated December 9, 2025. A targeted 2026 amendment check found a driver-license definition change, not a change to these selected thresholds and testing duties; this is not an exhaustive current-law audit.

All five original questions and their source limits were independently reviewed October 1, 2026. The refusal question specifically establishes a conscious adult without a CDL or CLP, a lawful OWI arrest, required grounds, a timely written formal breath-test request and officer advice. DOT certification and notice are distinguished from instant revocation.

What is not covered

These selected rules do not establish penalty amounts or periods, drug-related exceptions, blood-test refusal, incapacity or warrant procedures. The under-21 licensing rule is not an automatic criminal conviction. A statutory concentration standard is not a claim about an unadjusted borderline instrument reading.

Practice and saved mistakes

The full and shuffled views reuse the same 5 questions. Separate technical numbered sets and mixed practice selections stay unchanged. My mistakes adds this local topic to the same CAR history, without mixing other vehicles or states.
