Iowa motorcycle passenger, lane and headlamp rules: sources and limits

8 original questions with explanations and saved review. Selected ordinary highway rules for passenger seating and footrests, full-lane use, riding abreast, between-row travel, same-lane overtaking and motorcycle headlamps. Riding-safety recommendations and legal permissions are kept distinct.

Read each question’s conditions carefully. Requirements can differ by age, license and vehicle use. How we built this practice.

How we built this practice

Complete Iowa Code 2026 sections 321.275 and 321.386, their exceptions and displayed histories were read October 1, 2026. These one-page PDFs were generated December 11, 2025; the published Code edition is not a complete 2026 session-amendment audit.

The actual statutory bodies and these original questions were directly read and independently reviewed October 1, 2026. This new source read is separate from the September 29 agency guidance used for licensing. Page 1 is both the physical and printed page in each section PDF.

What is not covered

The operating scenarios exclude locally permitted parades. Rear-seat passenger questions preserve the sidecar and enclosed-cab footrest exceptions. Two abreast is a legal maximum, not a recommended formation. This set does not establish every equipment, permit or later amendment requirement.

Practice and saved mistakes

The full and shuffled views reuse the same 8 questions. Separate technical numbered sets and mixed practice selections stay unchanged. My mistakes adds this local topic to the same rider history, without mixing other vehicles or states.
