  1. A Kansas resident has only an ordinary Class C license and no motorcycle permit. Does that alone authorize riding a conventional two-wheel motorcycle on public roads?

Correct answer: No. The rider needs the appropriate Class M authorization or motorcycle instruction permit.

Class M covers motorcycles separately from ordinary Class C driving. A motorcycle instruction permit is a separate supervised route; experience driving cars does not add motorcycle authority.

    Source: K.S.A. 8-234b(a)(6)-(7), (b): Class C and Class M; class-specific driving authorization. Current Kansas Legislature text reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  2. A Kansas teenager wants the ordinary under-17 motorcycle instruction permit. What is the minimum age at which the teenager may apply?

    Correct answer: 14.

The under-17 motorcycle-permit provision begins at age 14. This is eligibility to apply and meet the permit conditions, not permission to ride independently.

    Source: K.S.A. 8-2,100(c): motorcycle instruction-permit applicants at least14 but under17. Current Kansas Legislature text reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  3. A 15-year-old applies for a Kansas motorcycle instruction permit. Which application requirement applies because the applicant is under 16?

Correct answer: The written application of a parent or guardian.

The under-17 instruction-permit law requires a parent or guardian's written application when the applicant is under 16. Supervision while riding is a separate continuing condition.

Source: K.S.A. 8-2,100(a): written application of parent or guardian for an applicant under16. Current Kansas Legislature text reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  4. For what period does Kansas issue an instruction permit under the under-17 permit statute?

    Correct answer: One year.

The statute provides a one-year permit. Its validity period does not remove supervision or other restrictions and is not the same as an unrestricted license.

    Source: K.S.A. 8-2,100(a): one-year instruction-permit period. Current Kansas Legislature text reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  5. A 16-year-old holds a Kansas motorcycle instruction permit. The supervisor is 21 or older, has a valid Class M license and at least one year of driving experience. Where may that supervisor ride?

Correct answer: On another motorcycle nearby or as a passenger on the learner's motorcycle.

The under-17 motorcycle provision permits either nearby motorcycle supervision or the qualified supervisor as a passenger. The motorcycle and passenger must still meet the applicable seating and equipment requirements.

Source: K.S.A. 8-2,100(c): qualified adult either riding a motorcycle in general proximity or riding as passenger. Current Kansas Legislature text reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  6. An 18-year-old holds a Kansas motorcycle instruction permit under K.S.A. 8-239. A qualified supervisor proposes sitting behind the learner instead of riding separately. What does this permit provision require?

Correct answer: The qualified supervisor must ride another motorcycle in the learner's general proximity.

The 17-and-older provision specifies a qualified adult riding a motorcycle nearby. Do not transfer the under-17 passenger-supervisor alternative to this different age provision.

Source: K.S.A. 8-239, final paragraph: motorcycle permit for age17 or older; qualified adult riding a motorcycle in general proximity. Current Kansas Legislature text reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  7. Which person meets the age, license and experience requirements to supervise a Kansas motorcycle permit holder?

Correct answer: A 22-year-old with a valid Class M license and two years of driving experience.

A qualified motorcycle supervisor must be at least 21, hold a valid Class M license and have at least one year of driving experience. The permitted supervision position also depends on the learner's age.

Source: K.S.A. 8-2,100(c): supervisor age, Class M and one-year experience requirements; same qualifications in K.S.A.8-239. Current Kansas Legislature text reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  8. A 16-year-old applies for an ordinary Kansas motorcycle instruction permit without a training-based exemption. Which test is excluded from the permit's requirement to pass the examination parts?

    Correct answer: The driving test.

The motorcycle-permit provision requires the examination parts other than driving. A permit supports supervised practice; it is not proof that the applicant has already passed the on-cycle license test.

Source: K.S.A. 8-2,100(c): successful examination parts other than driving; examination components in K.S.A.8-240(a)(1). Current Kansas Legislature text reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  9. A Class M applicant completes qualifying Motorcycle Safety Foundation training and supplies the required completion form. Which examinations does K.S.A. 8-240(a)(2) excuse?

Correct answer: The written and driving tests.

The training provision waives further written and driving testing for qualifying training with the required documentation. It does not say that the course replaces all remaining licensing requirements.

Source: K.S.A. 8-240(a)(2): qualifying motorcycle training and completion form; written and driving test exemption. Current Kansas Legislature text reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  10. An adult carries a 17-year-old passenger on an ordinary open two-wheel motorcycle in Kansas. Which helmet rule applies to the passenger?

Correct answer: The passenger must wear a compliant motorcycle helmet.

The under-18 helmet requirement applies to both operators and passengers. An adult operator cannot waive that protection for the minor passenger.

Source: K.S.A. 8-1598(a)-(b): under-18 operator/passenger helmet requirement and duty not to permit noncompliance. Current Kansas Legislature text reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  11. An adult operates an ordinary motorcycle with a windscreen only 9 inches high measured from the center of the handlebars. May that screen alone replace the required eye-protective device?

Correct answer: No. The windscreen exception requires at least 10 inches measured from the center of the handlebars.

The operator must use the specified shatterproof, impact-resistant eye protection unless the windscreen meets the statutory 10-inch minimum. A shorter screen does not meet that exception; protective gear remains sound safety practice.

Source: K.S.A. 8-1598(c)(1): operator eye-protective device and minimum10-inch windscreen exception. Current Kansas Legislature text reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  12. A 16-year-old passenger rides on an ordinary open motorcycle with a tall windscreen. Does the operator's windscreen exception eliminate this passenger's eye-protection duty?

Correct answer: No. The under-18 passenger must still wear the specified eye-protective device.

The minor-passenger provision separately requires protective glasses, goggles or a transparent face shield that is shatterproof and impact resistant. The windscreen exception is written for the operator, not that passenger rule.

Source: K.S.A. 8-1598(c)(1)-(2): operator windscreen exception versus separate under-18 passenger eye protection. Current Kansas Legislature text reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗
