  1. For a new school-bus endorsement, what must an applicant do in addition to the school-bus knowledge test?

Correct answer: Qualify for P and pass the required school-bus driving test.

The S endorsement requires qualification for the passenger endorsement and a driving skills test in a school bus of the appropriate vehicle group. Practice quizzes do not satisfy these licensing or training requirements.

  2. A child disappears beside your stopped bus. Which area needs attention?

Correct answer: The danger zones around every side of the bus.

Children can be hidden close to the front, sides or rear. The left side also exposes them to passing traffic; a single mirror view is not a complete check.

  3. You take over a school bus from a taller driver. What should happen before you operate it?

Correct answer: Check and adjust each mirror for your own seated view.

Mirror coverage depends on the driver's position. Check all mirrors before operation and have any inadequate view corrected.

  4. What should properly adjusted outside flat mirrors show on a school bus?

Correct answer: Bus sides, rear tires at ground level and traffic behind.

Flat mirrors help monitor side clearances and rear traffic. They do not remove the close-in blind spots in front of or behind the bus.

  5. A vehicle looks small in a school bus's convex mirror. What must the driver remember?

Correct answer: Its apparent size and distance can be distorted.

Convex mirrors widen the viewing area but distort apparent size and distance. Use them together with the other mirrors and direct observation.

Source: Colorado Commercial Driver License Manual (06/15/23), Section 10.1.4, physical PDF page 109. Reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  6. During a mirror check, which view belongs in the outside convex mirrors?

Correct answer: The bus sides and at least one adjacent lane on each side.

The handbook calls for side coverage up to the mirror mounts, the front of the rear tires touching the ground, and an adjacent lane on each side.

  7. Which mirror system helps reveal a child directly in front of the bus below normal direct sight?

Correct answer: The outside crossover mirrors.

Crossover mirrors cover the front bumper danger zone and areas near the front wheels and service door. They supplement direct vision rather than replacing the other mirrors.

Source: Colorado Commercial Driver License Manual (06/15/23), Section 10.1.5, physical PDF page 109. Reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  8. How should crossover-mirror coverage meet the area you can see directly ahead?

Correct answer: The mirror view and direct view should overlap.

Overlapping views help avoid an unseen gap in the front danger zone. Proper adjustment includes the front bumper area at ground level and the front tires.

  9. Can the overhead inside mirror replace exterior checks before you leave a student stop?

Correct answer: No; it primarily monitors the passenger compartment.

The interior mirror is mainly for observing students. Its limited rear view and blind spots do not replace the exterior mirror checks for traffic and children.

  10. A family asks you to move its assigned school-bus stop to another driveway. Under the RMV handbook guidance, what is needed before changing the stop?

Correct answer: Written approval from the appropriate school-district official.

The district establishes approved routes and stops. The handbook directs drivers not to relocate a stop without written approval from the appropriate district official; follow local procedures for reporting a safety concern.

  11. As you slow for a student stop, when should you check for children and traffic?

Correct answer: Before, during and after bringing the bus to a stop.

Approach cautiously while repeatedly scanning pedestrians, traffic and the mirrors. A situation can change while the bus is slowing or stopped.

  12. A Massachusetts school bus has an eight-lamp warning system. Which lights warn traffic as it approaches a pupil stop?

Correct answer: The alternating amber pupil-warning lamps.

Section 7B(7) uses amber lamps on approach for an eight-lamp system and discontinues four-way flashers for that approach function. Red pupil-warning lamps are for the stopped loading or unloading phase, not the moving approach.

  13. In the RMV handbook recommended student-stop procedure, where should the front bumper stop relative to waiting students?

Correct answer: At least 10 feet away, so their approach remains visible.

Section 10.2.1 recommends a complete stop with the front bumper at least 10 feet from students. This is handbook guidance, not a claim that every Massachusetts stop is governed by a separate fixed-distance statute. Follow the approved stop and local safety procedures.

  14. Under the RMV handbook stop procedure, how should you secure the bus before students board?

Correct answer: Use Park, or Neutral if there is no Park position, and set the parking brake.

The recommended procedure uses Park when available, otherwise Neutral, with the parking brake set at each stop. Do not substitute a transmission setting alone for securing the bus.

  15. The red loading lights are flashing. What must you confirm before fully opening the door and signaling children to approach?

Correct answer: Traffic has actually stopped.

Warning lamps and the stop arm do not physically stop a motorist. Make the final traffic check before inviting children toward the bus.

Source: Colorado Commercial Driver License Manual (06/15/23), Section 10.2.1, physical PDF page 110. Reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  16. How should students board after you give the signal?

Correct answer: Slowly, single file, using the handrail.

Orderly, single-file boarding with the handrail reduces falls and lets you observe each student. Use the dome light when darkness makes the steps harder to see.

Source: Colorado Commercial Driver License Manual (06/15/23), Section 10.2.2, physical PDF page 111. Reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  17. Six children were waiting, but you counted five boarding. What is the correct response?

Correct answer: Account for the missing child before moving.

Count students and know where each one is. Ask about a missing child and, if necessary, secure the bus and physically check around and underneath before moving.

  18. Everyone you first saw at the stop is seated. Why check the mirrors again before departure?

Correct answer: A late-arriving child may now be approaching the bus.

Children may run toward a bus after the original group boards. Make the final exterior checks before returning safely to traffic.

  19. When are newly boarded students ready for the bus to depart?

Correct answer: When they are seated and facing forward.

Wait until students are seated and facing forward, then complete the exterior and traffic checks. A clear stairwell alone does not mean they are safely settled.

  20. At a drop-off stop, when should students leave their seats?

Correct answer: After the driver tells them to unload.

Students stay seated until the driver releases them to unload. The driver counts them off and verifies that each has moved to a safe, visible position.

  21. A student drops a notebook close to a bus wheel. What should the student do?

Correct answer: Leave it and get the driver's attention from a safe place.

Teach students not to retrieve objects near or under the bus. They should move to safety and alert the driver so the situation can be handled with the bus secured.

  22. Why watch a student's clothing and backpack while the student steps off?

Correct answer: They can catch on the handrail or door area.

Loose straps or clothing can snag during exit. Watch each student clear the doorway and reach a safe location before departure.

  23. Before crossing in front of the bus, where should a student wait for the driver's signal?

Correct answer: At the right edge, far enough ahead for the driver to see their feet.

The handbook teaches moving at least 10 feet ahead to a visible position at the right edge of the roadway. Students check traffic and wait for the driver's signal; local crossing procedures also apply.

  24. A student has crossed in front of the bus to its left edge. What comes next?

Correct answer: Stop, check traffic and confirm it is safe to continue.

The bus can hide approaching traffic. At its left edge the student makes another traffic check and follows the driver's crossing signal before continuing.

  27. Where does Massachusetts Section 7B direct a school bus to receive or discharge pupils?

Correct answer: As close as practicable to the right-hand side or edge of the way.

Clause (7) places pupil loading and unloading as close as practicable to the right side or edge. This does not authorize an unapproved stop or remove the need to check traffic and account for pupils.

  28. You are still rolling toward a pupil stop. When may Massachusetts school-bus red pupil-warning lamps be used?

Correct answer: When the bus is stopped to load or unload pupils, not while rolling.

Section 7B(7) limits these red lamps to a stopped bus receiving or discharging school pupils. Keep the required stopped-bus warning while pupils enter or leave, and do not drive away before pupils who wish to cross have crossed safely.

  29. On a clear Massachusetts afternoon, what does Section 7B require for a school bus’s headlamps while it is operating?

Correct answer: Keep the headlamps illuminated.

Clause (7) requires illuminated headlamps whenever the school bus is operating. That requirement is separate from the amber and red pupil-warning systems.

  30. A pupil asks to leave the service door slightly open while the Massachusetts school bus moves slowly. What is required?

Correct answer: Keep all doors closed while the bus is in motion.

Section 7B(3) requires all doors to be closed while the bus is moving. Slow speed or adult supervision does not create an exception in that clause.

  31. At a railroad crossing where your school bus must stop, what stopping range does the RMV handbook recommend before the nearest rail?

Correct answer: From 15 to 50 feet before the nearest rail.

Section 10.4.4 recommends stopping 15–50 feet from the nearest rail, where you can obtain the best view. Follow applicable crossing law and local procedures; the question does not decide whether a particular crossing is exempt.

  32. You are preparing to look and listen at a required railroad stop. What should happen to the radio and passenger conversation?

Correct answer: Turn off the radio and noisy equipment and silence the passengers.

The RMV handbook calls for silencing passengers and turning off radios and other noisy equipment so the driver can listen for a train. Warning devices do not replace your own observations.

  33. With the school bus securely stopped before the rails, how does the RMV handbook recommend improving your ability to see and hear trains?

Correct answer: Open the service door and driver’s window, then look and listen both ways.

Section 10.4.4 recommends opening the service door and driver’s window while stopped and looking and listening in both directions. Recheck signals and the full crossing path before moving; keep the door closed during movement.

  34. The tracks and exit space are clear. How should you select a gear before crossing in a manually shifted school bus?

Correct answer: Choose a suitable low gear before entering and do not shift on the tracks.

The recommended crossing procedure uses a low gear selected before entering. Avoid changing gears on the tracks, where a missed shift could stall the bus.

  35. Traffic is stopped just beyond the rails. What space should you verify before committing the school bus to the crossing?

Correct answer: Room for the whole bus beyond the rails, with the handbook’s additional 15-foot allowance.

Do not enter unless you can completely clear the tracks. The RMV handbook gives bus length plus 15 feet as its general storage-space rule; judge the actual crossing and do not rely on traffic continuing to move.

  36. A building blocks your view along the railroad tracks and you cannot establish that crossing is safe. What should you do?

Correct answer: Do not cross; obtain help through the appropriate local procedure.

The handbook says not to cross when an obstruction prevents a safe view of the tracks. Resolve the problem through the appropriate assistance procedure rather than placing the bus or a pupil on the tracks.

  38. A train clears one track, but the red lights continue flashing at a multi-track crossing. What should you do?

Correct answer: Remain stopped; another train may be approaching.

A second train can approach on another track. Wait for the gates to rise, flashing warnings to stop and a safe crossing opportunity after checking all tracks.

  39. Your school bus stalls on the tracks and cannot clear them promptly. What is the priority?

Correct answer: Evacuate everyone immediately away from the tracks.

A bus stalled or trapped on tracks requires immediate evacuation. Move far away at an angle away from the tracks and toward an approaching train's direction, avoiding the area where debris may be pushed.

  40. The bus is stopped after an incident, with no immediate danger inside. How should evacuation be decided?

Correct answer: Compare the danger of staying aboard with the danger outside.

Evacuation can expose children to moving traffic and other hazards. Assess the emergency and evacuate when staying aboard is more dangerous; do not delay when an immediate threat requires exit.

  41. Smoke and fire threaten the bus's occupied passenger area. What should you do first?

Correct answer: Evacuate the students to a safe place.

Fire or a serious threat of fire requires evacuation. Protect passengers and obtain emergency help; a practice question is not training to fight a bus fire.

  42. The normal entrance is unsafe to use during an evacuation. What should guide your choice of another exit?

Correct answer: The hazard location and the safest usable exit.

Choose the front, rear, both, side, window or roof exits according to the emergency and their usability. Do not direct students through the hazard merely to use the usual entrance.

  43. If time and conditions permit, how should you secure the bus before directing an emergency evacuation?

Correct answer: Set the brake, select park or neutral, stop the engine and take the key.

The handbook's evacuation procedure secures the vehicle against movement and uses hazard lamps. Contact dispatch if time permits, but do not delay an urgent evacuation to complete a call.

  44. Why teach emergency-exit procedures to all students, even when trained student helpers are assigned?

Correct answer: The assigned helpers may be absent when an emergency occurs.

Assigned helpers are useful, but every student needs basic evacuation knowledge. Planning must account for an emergency on a day when those helpers are not riding.

Correct answer: Away from the tracks, angled toward the approaching train.

Move well away from both the bus and the tracks. Angling toward the approaching train takes evacuees away from the direction debris may be carried after impact.

  47. Under Massachusetts Section 7B, how often must pupils receive on-bus emergency-evacuation drills during a school year?

Correct answer: At least twice during the school year.

Clause (15) requires at least two on-bus emergency-evacuation drills each school year. These drills are separate from the classroom safe-riding instruction also required by the statute.

  48. How often does Section 7B require classroom instruction in safe school-bus riding practices?

Correct answer: At least three times each school year, including once in the first week.

Clause (15) requires at least three classroom sessions: one in the first week, one between September and January, and one between January and the end of the school year. The two required on-bus evacuation drills do not replace these sessions.

  49. A Massachusetts school bus is being used on a public highway primarily for passengers other than school pupils. What does Section 7B require?

Correct answer: Conceal the school-bus wording and do not use the school red lights or stop arm.

Clause (1) requires the school-bus wording to be concealed for this use and prohibits activation of the school warning lamps and stop arm. This does not remove the vehicle’s other applicable passenger-transport requirements.

  50. Two students argue inside while other children are still unloading. What should your attention remain on first?

Correct answer: The children and traffic outside until unloading is safe.

Loading and unloading demand exterior observation. Once students are safely away, handle the behavior issue in a safely stopped and secured bus according to local procedures.

  51. A passenger's behavior prevents you from safely driving the school bus. What should you do?

Correct answer: Stop and secure the bus safely, then request authorized assistance.

Use a safe stopping location and follow the school's assistance and discipline procedures. Do not put a student out at an unauthorized location.

  52. In an emergency stop with working ABS on your school bus, what should you avoid?

Correct answer: Pumping the brake pedal.

Do not pump the brakes of an ABS-equipped bus in an emergency. Apply the braking force needed to stop safely while maintaining control.

Source: Colorado Commercial Driver License Manual (06/15/23), Section 10.6.3, physical PDF page 116. Reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  53. What does ABS fail to protect a school bus from?

Correct answer: A skid caused by taking a turn too fast.

ABS helps with brake-induced wheel lock. It does not make excessive cornering speed, close following or poorly maintained brakes safe, and it does not guarantee a shorter stop.

  54. Strong crosswinds begin pushing your school bus sideways. What is the appropriate response?

Correct answer: Reduce speed and, if necessary, stop safely and contact dispatch.

The large side area makes the bus vulnerable to wind. Maintain a firm grip, anticipate gusts, slow down and wait in a safe place if conditions require it.

  55. As you turn away from a curb, why check the school bus's rear overhang in the mirrors?

Correct answer: Its tail can swing outward toward nearby people or objects.

A long rear overhang can sweep outward during a turn. Check before and during the movement; do not treat a handbook example as an exact clearance for every bus.

  56. Backing cannot safely be avoided at an authorized location. May you put a student outside to direct the school bus?

Correct answer: No; do not place a student outside to direct backing.

Section 10.7.3 says never to put a student outside when backing. Avoid backing when a safer alternative exists and follow the approved procedure, using an appropriate adult lookout where available.

  57. Your authorized pickup requires unavoidable backing. In what order should you handle students?

Correct answer: Board them before backing, then watch for late arrivals.

At pickup, have all students aboard before unavoidable backing and watch for latecomers. At drop-off, complete any necessary backing before students unload.

  58. For a Massachusetts school bus used to transport pupils, when is the pretrip inspection required by Section 7B?

Correct answer: Daily, before operating the bus.

Clause (16) requires a daily pretrip inspection. A previous driver’s uneventful trip or a recent repair does not replace this inspection duty.

Source: Massachusetts General Laws c.90, Section 7B, clause (16), daily pretrip inspection. Current statute reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  59. The route has ended and the bus seems quiet. What must the driver still do?

Correct answer: Walk through and check for sleeping or hiding students.

A physical post-trip check can find a student who is asleep or hidden from the driving position. Also check belongings, exits and visible problems and make required reports.

  60. Your Massachusetts school-bus pretrip finds a defect that may affect safe operation or cause a mechanical breakdown. How must it be reported under Section 7B?

Correct answer: Promptly, in writing, to the employer.

Clause (16) requires prompt written reporting to the employer of the specified defects. Reporting is not permission to operate an unsafe bus; follow the safe repair and vehicle-release procedure.

Source: Massachusetts General Laws c.90, Section 7B, clause (16), written defect reporting. Current statute reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  61. A Massachusetts school bus reaches a fuel station with passengers still aboard. What does Section 7B require?

Correct answer: Do not fuel the bus while it is occupied by passengers.

Clause (5) prohibits fueling a school bus while it is occupied by passengers. Do not import a different state’s occupied-fueling exception into this rule; arrange a safe, authorized fueling plan.

Source: Massachusetts General Laws c.90, Section 7B, clause (5). Current statute reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  62. On a routine Massachusetts pupil trip with no emergency, every adequate seat is occupied. May three more pupils simply stand in the aisle?

Correct answer: No; the normal rule requires adequate seats and pupils seated before moving.

Section 7B(2) normally limits occupancy to adequate seating and requires pupils to be seated before moving. Its narrow emergency exception permits at most three standees, with supporting straps, handles or bars, for no more than five consecutive school days. It is not a routine capacity increase.

Source: Massachusetts General Laws c.90, Section 7B, clause (2), seating and narrow emergency standee exception. Current statute reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  63. Which places must a Massachusetts school-bus daily post-trip interior inspection include to make sure no pupils remain?

Correct answer: Behind and underneath every seat, as well as the rest of the interior.

Section 7B(17) expressly includes the area behind and underneath each seat in the daily post-trip interior check. Silence or an interior mirror view does not establish that the bus is empty.

Source: Massachusetts General Laws c.90, Section 7B, clause (17). Current statute reviewed September 14, 2026. ↗

  64. While a Massachusetts school bus is moving, may its operator use a mobile electronic device to handle a routine schedule message?

Correct answer: No; routine scheduling is not the statute’s emergency exception.

Section 7B prohibits mobile-electronic-device use while the bus is in motion except for the defined emergency uses, such as calling for medical or police help or reporting a disabled bus. An ordinary schedule message is not an emergency; hands-free operation is not a general exemption.

Massachusetts CDL: school buses

64 questions. Danger zones, mirrors, pupil stops, railroad crossings, evacuation, Massachusetts inspections and passenger safeguards.

Knowledge practice only: this is not a school-bus driver certificate, registered ELDT, behind-the-wheel training or permission to transport pupils. Confirm RMV licensing, medical, training and testing requirements separately; the quizzes are not an emergency-response procedure.

Sources and equipment limits

39 of our shared safety scenarios retain their actual Colorado DMV-linked handbook or federal source. The other 25 use the Massachusetts RMV manual and General Laws c.90, Section 7B. Colorado-specific operating rules are excluded. In Massachusetts, do not fuel a school bus occupied by passengers; the ordinary seated-pupil rule has only a narrow statutory emergency standee exception. Follow current state rules, district procedures and equipment-specific training.
