Massachusetts CDL handbook and sources

Use the official RMV material alongside the explanations. Practice covers selected licensing, general commercial-safety and specialist topics, not the whole CDL manual.

Twelve general CDL study topics

The 192 general records include 16 licensing and qualification questions, 64 vehicle inspection and control questions, 64 road-condition and emergency questions, and 48 cargo questions. Separate question sets add 48 air-brake, 48 combination, 24 doubles/triples, 24 tank, 40 passenger, 80 hazardous-materials and 64 school-bus questions, plus 80 inspection and skills-preparation questions, and 32 bus qualification and accessible-service questions, bringing CDL practice to 632 records. This is not a complete training curriculum.

Seven specialist subjects

Air brakes: 48 questions

The explanations retain their actual Colorado DMV-linked handbook and federal equipment sources. Compare Section 5 of the RMV manual. Its older 55-psi warning language must not be treated as the current FMVSS 121 warning requirement: our federal questions distinguish modern 60-psi requirements from older-vehicle exceptions. Manufacturer limits and safe test setup still apply; these are not an RMV practical-test script.

Combination vehicles: 48 questions

The explanations retain their actual Colorado DMV-linked handbook and federal protection/breakaway sources. Compare Section 6 of the RMV manual. Use the coupling manufacturer’s full procedure: a tug check does not replace visual locking inspection. A written quiz does not establish practical competence or permission to operate an unfamiliar combination.

Doubles and triples: 24 questions

Our scenarios retain their actual Colorado DMV-linked manual and federal coupling, ABS and endorsement sources. Compare Section 7 of the RMV manual. The dolly must be clear of the rear trailer before its pintle connection is released. Equipment-specific safety-device exceptions remain qualified. A T endorsement does not authorize every trailer configuration, route, length or weight in Massachusetts; confirm operating permissions separately.

Tank vehicles: 24 questions

Our scenarios retain their actual Colorado DMV-linked manual and federal tank-vehicle definition. Compare Section 8 of the RMV manual. Rated capacity is not the amount currently loaded; the empty storage-container exception is narrow, not a blanket exception for empty transport tanks. Baffles do not eliminate sideways surge, and expansion space depends on the liquid. This is knowledge practice, not cargo-specific handling training or hazardous-materials authorization.

Passenger vehicles: 40 questions

Our scenarios retain their actual Colorado DMV-linked manual and current federal passenger-operation, inspection and equipment sources. Compare Section 4 of the RMV manual, but do not use its older no-defect reporting instruction, ORM-D language or rounded hazardous-cargo weights as the current federal rule. The questions preserve applicable exceptions and precise limits. Standing riders on a bus designed for them do not imply permission to stand on a school bus. See the separate bus-qualification, accessible-service and practical-preparation supplements. These materials do not cover every railroad, service-specific or practical operating requirement.

Hazardous materials: 80 questions

Our scenarios retain their actual Colorado DMV-linked handbook, dated federal regulations and FMCSA training sources. Compare Section 9 of the RMV manual, whose July 2017 section footer signals that newer federal rules must also be checked. Our questions preserve exceptions for placarding, cargo-tank attendance and railroad stops, and distinguish current incident-report deadlines from older manual wording. Local routing, permits, product-specific procedures and further endorsement requirements are not fully covered.

School buses: 64 questions

39 of our shared safety scenarios retain their actual Colorado DMV-linked handbook or federal source. The other 25 use the Massachusetts RMV manual and General Laws c.90, Section 7B. Colorado-specific operating rules are excluded. In Massachusetts, do not fuel a school bus occupied by passengers; the ordinary seated-pupil rule has only a narrow statutory emergency standee exception. Follow current state rules, district procedures and equipment-specific training.

Inspection and skills preparation: 80 questions

79 explanations are individually checked against physical pages in the RMV March 2025-version CDL manual. The mirror-eligibility question uses the RMV September 9, 2026 notice. Inspection and basic-control guidance uses modernized Sections 11 and 12; road guidance uses Section 13. The RMV retains a vehicle-specific ten-part air-brake demonstration. Do not treat the manual’s older 55-psi wording as a universal current federal warning-device standard or use these questions as a complete air-brake test script.

Forward Offset Tracking and mirror-eligibility questions reflect Massachusetts-specific differences. Use RMV test guidance with qualified hands-on instruction.

Bus qualifications and accessibility: 32 questions

Massachusetts certificate questions use current RMV and DPU application instructions and General Laws c.90, Section 8A. Federal questions use FMCSA training guidance and 49 CFR 383.123, 37.27, 37.165, 37.167 and 37.173. These sources replace outdated agency directions in the manual preface; no new timed certificate exam or complete training curriculum is claimed.

Current RMV instructions handle school-bus certificates; DPU handles motor-bus certificates. The federal accessibility questions expressly concern covered services, not public-school transportation excluded under 49 CFR 37.27. Other laws and individual transport plans may still impose duties.

How we built this practice

Local licensing explanations cite the RMV’s March 2025-version CDL manual, checked September 14, 2026, with exact preface pages. The H-endorsement training question cites FMCSA’s ELDT guidance. This site is not a registered training provider.

Our 479 shared commercial-safety scenarios retain their real sources: the Colorado DMV-linked CDL manual, federal motor-carrier rules and Federal Railroad Administration guidance. They cover general vehicle, cargo, braking, coupling, tank, passenger, hazardous-materials and school-bus safety principles, not Colorado licensing rules. Federal scenarios keep their stated applicability and exceptions; we have not relabeled those citations as Massachusetts pages.

The 25 Massachusetts-specific school-bus scenarios use Section 10 of the RMV manual and General Laws c.90, Section 7B. They distinguish handbook recommendations from state law and do not import Colorado pupil-transport rules. The school-bus mock is an independent practice format; confirm current official test length and timing with the RMV.

The RMV manual is linked, not reproduced here. Its preface contains some older administrative and skills-test descriptions; check current RMV instructions before booking a test or using an examiner procedure. The skills-preparation question set uses modernized Sections 11 and 12 and on-road Section 13, not the older preface maneuver list.
