Review all 21 questions with answers
  1. A Michigan applicant's initial CLP was issued nine days ago. All other skills-test prerequisites are satisfied. What minimum elapsed time from initial issuance must be reached before the applicant may take the skills test?

    Correct answer: 14 days.

Federal CLP rules prohibit taking the CDL skills test during the first 14 days after initial permit issuance. Completing training early does not shorten this minimum hold; it is separate from arranging the test appointment.

Source: 49 CFR 383.25(e), minimum fourteen-day period after initial CLP issuance before CDL skills-test eligibility. ↗

  2. An applicant scores 90% on one required CDL knowledge test and 70% on another. Under Michigan's passing standard, which result is correct?

Correct answer: Only the test scored at 90% is passed.

Michigan requires at least 80% on each CDL knowledge test. A stronger score on one test cannot compensate for a failing score on another.

Source: Testing requirements and your CDL > Written knowledge tests, introductory paragraph requiring a minimum score of 80 percent on each test. ↗

  3. A Michigan applicant fails a CDL knowledge test in the morning and wants to retake the same testing category that afternoon. What does SOS permit?

Correct answer: No second attempt in that category that day.

Michigan allows only one knowledge test per day in each testing category. The application instructions also specify a one-day wait after a failed attempt; a close score does not create an exception.

Source: Applying for a CDL, step 2, one-day retest wait; Testing requirements and your CDL > Written knowledge tests, one test per day from each testing category. ↗

  4. An applicant is preparing for the ordinary three-part CDL skills test. In which order must the parts be successfully completed?

Correct answer: Pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, on-road skills.

The federal sequence is pre-trip inspection, basic vehicle control, then on-road skills. If an applicant fails a segment, the applicant cannot continue to the next one.

Source: 49 CFR 383.133(c)(6) and (c)(6)(i), required skills-test sequence and prohibition on continuing after a failed segment. ↗

  5. An ordinary first-time Class B applicant is required to complete ELDT. At what point does Michigan require that training to be completed for the CDL skills test?

Correct answer: Before the skills test is scheduled.

Michigan's current application instructions require all applicable ELDT requirements to be completed before the CDL driving skills test is scheduled. Training completion and the CLP minimum hold are separate prerequisites.

Source: Testing requirements and your CDL > CDL driving skills tests, paragraph beginning 'Before scheduling your CDL driving skills test'; ELDT tab, first-time Class A or B applicants. ↗

  6. A CDL holder is applying for a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time and must complete ELDT. When must the hazardous-materials training portion be finished?

Correct answer: Before taking the H knowledge test.

A first-time H endorsement applicant must complete the hazardous-materials portion of ELDT before the H written knowledge test. Other endorsement requirements remain separate; this training rule does not itself authorize carrying hazardous materials.

Source: Testing requirements and your CDL > ELDT, paragraph beginning 'Once implemented', final sentence on first-time hazardous materials applicants; Applying for a CDL, step 4. ↗

  7. A first-time Class B applicant has met all CLP requirements but has not yet completed ELDT. The applicant is not seeking H. Does unfinished ELDT alone prevent Michigan from issuing the CLP?

Correct answer: No; the CLP may be issued before ELDT is finished.

Michigan expressly permits CLP issuance before ELDT is completed. That does not waive required training before skills-test scheduling. First-time H applicants have a separate training prerequisite before their H knowledge test.

Source: Applying for a CDL, step 4, CLP may issue before ELDT completion; Testing requirements and your CDL > ELDT, CLP issuance paragraph; CDL driving skills tests, ELDT before scheduling. ↗

  8. A first-time Class A applicant is choosing a provider for required ELDT. Which qualification must the provider have?

Correct answer: A listing on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry.

Required entry-level training must come from a provider listed on FMCSA's Training Provider Registry. An employer recommendation or unrelated driver-education experience alone does not establish that qualification.

Source: 49 CFR 380.609(a), training from a provider listed on the Training Provider Registry for first-time Class A or B applicants and upgrades. ↗

  9. A Class B CDL holder is applying for a Class A CDL for the first time. No ELDT exemption applies. How does the existing Class B credential affect the training requirement?

Correct answer: The upgrade still requires the applicable ELDT.

FMCSA identifies upgrading from Class B to Class A as an ELDT-triggering application. An existing Class B CDL does not by itself waive that training, and a knowledge test is not a substitute for ELDT.

Source: About the ELDT Regulations, bullet 'Upgrading an existing Class B CDL to a Class A CDL'; page last updated February 4, 2026. ↗

  10. A driver received a Class A CDL in 2021 and is simply renewing that same credential, without an upgrade or a new endorsement. Does ELDT become required solely because of the renewal?

Correct answer: No; the ELDT requirement is not retroactive for that CDL.

FMCSA states that ELDT is not retroactive for a CDL issued before February 7, 2022, with respect to that credential. This scenario does not involve a new endorsement or another change that could independently trigger training.

Source: About the ELDT Regulations, paragraph stating non-retroactivity for a CDL or S, P, or H endorsement issued before February 7, 2022; page last updated February 4, 2026. ↗

  11. A Michigan CLP holder is practicing in a truck on public roads. Where must the properly licensed accompanying CDL holder be during the practice?

Correct answer: In the front seat next to the learner, directly supervising.

For a non-passenger vehicle, the accompanying CDL holder must be in the front seat next to the learner, observing and directly supervising. The supervisor must also hold the proper CDL group and endorsements and be authorized for that trip. Passenger vehicles have a different specified seating arrangement.

Source: 49 CFR 383.25(a)(1), accompanying CDL holder's credentials, front-seat location, observation and direct supervision; passenger-vehicle seating exception. ↗

  12. A Michigan CLP holder is preparing for supervised practice on public roads. Which underlying driving credential must the learner also hold?

Correct answer: A valid driver license issued by Michigan.

The federal CLP rule requires a valid driver license issued by the same jurisdiction that issued the CLP. A Michigan CLP therefore does not replace the learner's valid Michigan driver license.

Source: 49 CFR 383.25(a)(2), valid underlying driver license from the CLP-issuing jurisdiction; 383.25(b), CLP as a separate document. ↗

  13. Which list contains only federal endorsements that may be issued on a commercial learner's permit?

Correct answer: Passenger, school bus, and tank vehicle.

Federal CLP rules allow P, S, and N endorsements, subject to their knowledge-test and operating restrictions. Other federal endorsements are prohibited on a CLP. Having P, S, or N on a permit does not grant unrestricted passenger or tank operations.

Source: 49 CFR 383.25(a)(5)(i)-(iv), permitted P, S and N CLP endorsements and prohibition on all other federal endorsements; (a)(6), hazardous-materials transport prohibition. ↗

  14. An applicant passes the other required knowledge tests but fails the air-brake portion. If a CLP or CDL is issued, how is that air-brake limitation recorded?

Correct answer: As a restriction on the commercial driving credential.

Failure of the air-brake knowledge portion requires an air-brake restriction if the CLP or CDL is issued. This is a limitation on the driver's credential, not a separate air-brake endorsement or a vehicle-registration condition.

Source: Testing requirements and your CDL > Written knowledge tests > Air brakes, restriction for not passing the air-brake test; corroboration: 49 CFR 383.135(a)(2). ↗

  15. A Michigan CDL applicant qualifies for both the tank-vehicle and hazardous-materials endorsements. Which endorsement code appears instead of separate H and N codes?

    Correct answer: X.

Michigan uses X in the endorsement field for the combined tank and hazardous-materials qualification. T identifies double/triple trailers and P identifies passenger vehicles. This question concerns endorsement codes, not restriction codes.

Source: Applying for a CDL > Endorsements, X, T and P entries; X replaces H and N when both endorsements are received. ↗

  16. A Michigan commercial driver makes both interstate trips and trips that qualify as intrastate-only commerce. For the interstate-versus-intrastate part of self-certification, which category must the driver select?

Correct answer: Interstate, because the driver's work includes both.

Michigan's self-certification instructions require a driver who operates in both interstate and intrastate commerce to choose interstate. The category is not decided by a majority of workdays or changed informally from week to week.

Source: How do I determine which type of commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operation I should self-certify to? > Step 1, NOTE requiring interstate selection when both types are performed. ↗

  17. A driver takes cargo between two Michigan warehouses as one leg of a shipment that will be delivered to another state. The truck stays in Michigan during this leg. How do SOS self-certification instructions classify the commerce?

Correct answer: Interstate, because the cargo is destined for another state.

Under Michigan's self-certification instructions, an in-state trip can be interstate commerce when the cargo came from or will be delivered to another state or country. The shipment described is a continuing interstate movement, even though this particular leg stays in Michigan.

Source: How do I determine which type of commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operation I should self-certify to? > Step 1, third interstate-commerce bullet, in-state transport of cargo from or destined to another state or country. ↗

  18. A driver performs some excepted interstate work and some non-excepted interstate work. The activities have already been correctly classified. Which single self-certification type should the driver choose?

    Correct answer: Non-excepted interstate.

Michigan instructs a driver who performs both excepted and non-excepted interstate operations to select non-excepted interstate. This question assumes the activities are already classified; it does not decide whether a particular medical exception applies.

Source: How do I determine which type of commercial motor vehicle (CMV) operation I should self-certify to? > Step 2 > Interstate Commerce -- Excepted or Non-excepted, sentence requiring non-excepted interstate when both are performed. ↗

  19. An applicant has just passed the required Michigan CDL skills test. What is the next credential step in SOS's application instructions?

Correct answer: Visit SOS to obtain the CDL temporary permit.

Michigan directs the successful applicant to a Secretary of State office to obtain the CDL temporary permit and complete issuance. The photo CDL then arrives by mail. Passing the test alone is not the same as receiving the commercial credential.

Source: Applying for a CDL, step 7; Testing requirements and your CDL > CDL driving skills tests, final paragraph on obtaining the CDL temporary permit after passing. ↗

  20. For a non-excepted interstate driver's Michigan CDL record, which route does SOS now use to receive medical certification?

Correct answer: Electronic certification data from the National Registry.

SOS says it receives medical certification electronically from the National Registry for non-excepted interstate CDL and CLP processing. This question concerns the state record-update process, not roadside proof or temporary authority to drive; it does not claim that a paper certificate is never valid.

Source: National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners, June 14, 2025 implementation paragraph and following paragraph on electronic MEC acceptance from the National Registry. ↗

  21. A Michigan CDL holder changes from interstate operation to intrastate-only operation and updates the self-certification. What must happen to the driving credential?

Correct answer: Get a new license with the K intrastate-only restriction.

SOS requires a new license when a self-certification change calls for adding or removing the K intrastate-only restriction. Changing from interstate to intrastate-only adds that restriction. N is a tank-vehicle endorsement, not the intrastate restriction.

Source: Must I visit a Secretary of State office to report a change to my type of commercial motor vehicle operation certification?, new license to add or remove K for an interstate/intrastate change. ↗
