Review all 25 questions with answers
  1. You are waiting to turn left at an intersection. An oncoming car is close enough that turning would create a hazard. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait for the oncoming car to pass.

A left-turning driver must yield to oncoming traffic in the intersection or close enough to be an immediate hazard. A turn signal does not give you priority.

Source: Missouri Revised Statutes, section 304.351, subsection 3. ↗

  2. A vehicle from a crossing road is already inside an intersection with no signs or signals. As you approach, what is required?

Correct answer: Yield to the vehicle already in the intersection.

At an uncontrolled intersection, an approaching driver yields to a vehicle that has already entered from another road. Do not force an existing crossing movement to stop.

Source: Missouri Revised Statutes, section 304.351, subsection 1. ↗

  3. At a stop-controlled intersection with no stop line and no crosswalk, where do you stop?

Correct answer: Before entering, where you can see approaching cross traffic.

With neither a stop line nor a crosswalk, stop at the point nearest the intersecting road where you can see approaching traffic, before entering the intersection.

Source: Missouri Revised Statutes, section 304.351, subsection 4(2)(a). ↗

  4. You are leaving a driveway while a car approaches on the road you want to enter. It would have to brake for you. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait until you can enter without creating that conflict.

When entering a highway from a driveway or private road, yield to approaching traffic. Do not force the approaching driver to brake for your entry.

Source: Missouri Revised Statutes, section 304.351, subsection 5. ↗

  5. An intersection has signs and lane markings directing your turning path. What should determine the path you follow?

Correct answer: Follow the route required by the traffic-control devices.

Official traffic-control devices may require a particular turning course. Follow those directions rather than substituting a general turning rule.

Source: Missouri Revised Statutes, section 304.341, subsection 1(3). ↗

  6. Without special lane directions, which lane should you use to approach an intersection for a left turn?

Correct answer: The far-left lane lawfully available in your direction.

Approach in the extreme left-hand lane lawfully available to your direction. Complete the turn into a lawful receiving lane, following any special traffic-control directions.

Source: Missouri Revised Statutes, section 304.341, subsection 1(2)-(3). ↗

  7. On a two-lane, two-way road, an oncoming school bus stops to unload children with its red stop signals operating. What must you do?

Correct answer: Stop before reaching the bus and wait as required.

On this two-lane road, traffic from both directions must stop for the school bus. Remain stopped until the bus resumes motion or its driver signals you to proceed, and watch for children.

Source: Missouri Revised Statutes, section 304.050, subsection 1(1). ↗

  8. You are behind a school bus in the same direction on a four-lane highway. It stops on your roadway to unload children and displays its stop signals. What must you do?

Correct answer: Stop before the bus and remain stopped as required.

The four-lane opposing-direction exception does not authorize traffic behind the bus on the same roadway to pass. Stop and wait for the bus to move or its driver to signal you to proceed.

Source: Missouri Revised Statutes, section 304.050, subsections 1(1) and 6. ↗

  9. As you approach a roundabout entrance, a car is circulating toward you from the left. What should you do?

Correct answer: Yield and enter when there is a suitable gap.

Slow down and yield to circulating traffic before entering. Check for bicyclists and pedestrians in the crosswalk as well; enter to travel counterclockwise around the island.

Source: Missouri Driver Guide, August 2026; PDF page 28, printed page 26; Roundabout Intersections; Approaching the roundabout. ↗

  10. An emergency vehicle approaches with its warning signals operating while you are inside a roundabout. What should you normally do?

Correct answer: Exit safely, then pull to the right to let it pass.

Avoid blocking the circulating roadway. Leave the roundabout safely and pull to the right. Do not enter the roundabout in the first place if an emergency vehicle is approaching.

Source: Missouri Driver Guide, August 2026; PDF page 29, printed page 27; Roundabout Intersections; Emergency Vehicles. ↗

  11. A vehicle ahead is waiting to turn left, and passing it would require driving onto the shoulder. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait instead of using the shoulder to pass.

Permission to pass a left-turning vehicle on the right does not permit driving off the paved or main traveled portion of the roadway onto the shoulder.

Source: Missouri Driver Guide, August 2026; PDF page 24, printed page 22; Passing on the Right. ↗

  12. You have passed the turn or exit you wanted. What should you do next?

Correct answer: Continue to a place where you can safely change your route.

Do not back up in a travel lane to recover a missed exit. Continue until you can safely and lawfully turn around or take another route.

Source: Missouri Driver Guide, August 2026; PDF page 45, printed page 43; No Lane Markings; General Driving. ↗

  13. A traffic officer directs you to stop, but the traffic light facing you is green. Which instruction do you follow?

Correct answer: Stop as directed by the traffic officer.

Follow the traffic officer's directions even when they differ from a traffic signal or sign.

Source: Missouri Driver Guide, August 2026; PDF page 45, printed page 43; Traffic Officers. ↗

  14. A broken yellow line is on your side of a two-lane road. What does that allow?

Correct answer: Crossing to pass when visibility, traffic and other rules permit.

A broken line permits a passing maneuver, but it does not make every passing attempt safe or legal. You still need adequate visibility and space, and must obey other restrictions.

Source: Missouri Driver Guide, August 2026; PDF page 44, printed page 42; Meanings of Pavement Markings; No Passing Zones. ↗

  15. Two solid yellow lines divide opposing traffic. What do they mean for overtaking another vehicle?

Correct answer: Do not cross them to make a passing maneuver.

The guide prohibits crossing double solid yellow centerlines to pass. This question concerns overtaking, not every possible lawful crossing movement.

Source: Missouri Driver Guide, August 2026; PDF page 44, printed page 42; Direction of Traffic. ↗

  16. How should you respond to a flashing red traffic light?

Correct answer: Make a full stop, then yield before proceeding safely.

A flashing red light has the same meaning as a stop sign. Stop fully and follow the right-of-way rules before proceeding.

Source: Missouri Driver Guide, August 2026; PDF page 46, printed page 44; Flashing Signal All Directions. ↗

  17. You face a circular red light and no sign prohibits a right turn. When may you turn right?

Correct answer: After a full stop, yielding to pedestrians and other traffic.

A permitted right turn on red requires a complete stop first. Turn cautiously only after yielding and making sure the way is clear.

Source: Missouri Driver Guide, August 2026; PDF page 46, printed page 44; Traffic Signals; red light. ↗

  18. A green light changes to steady yellow while you are still far enough away to stop safely. What should you do?

Correct answer: Stop before entering the intersection.

The guide says to stop for a steady yellow unless you are already in the intersection or too close to stop safely before entering. Do not speed up to beat the red.

Source: Missouri Driver Guide, August 2026; PDF page 46, printed page 44; Traffic Signals; steady yellow light. ↗

  19. A flashing yellow left-turn arrow is displayed. What is required before you turn?

Correct answer: Wait for an adequate gap and yield to pedestrians.

A flashing yellow arrow permits the indicated turn after yielding. Unlike a protected green arrow phase, it requires you to choose a suitable gap in opposing traffic.

Source: Missouri Driver Guide, August 2026; PDF page 47, printed page 45; Traffic Signals; flashing yellow arrow. ↗

  20. Your left-turn signal shows a steady red arrow. What should you do?

Correct answer: Stop and wait for an indication permitting the left turn.

For the steady red left-turn arrow described in the guide, stop and wait for a green indication or flashing yellow arrow that permits movement. Yield as required when the indication changes.

Source: Missouri Driver Guide, August 2026; PDF page 46, printed page 44; Left Turn Signals; steady red arrow. ↗

  21. Which traffic instruction is identified by an eight-sided sign?

    Correct answer: Stop.

The octagon is the distinctive shape of a stop sign. Recognizing its shape helps even when the lettering is difficult to read.

Source: Missouri Driver Guide, August 2026; PDF page 47, printed page 45; Sign Shapes. ↗

  22. A round advance-warning sign is associated with which hazard?

Correct answer: A railroad crossing ahead.

Round railroad advance-warning signs alert drivers to a crossing ahead. Be prepared to identify and obey the controls at the crossing itself.

Source: Missouri Driver Guide, August 2026; PDF page 47, printed page 45; Sign Shapes. ↗

  23. Which message is associated with a pennant-shaped roadside sign?

    Correct answer: No passing zone.

A pennant marks a no-passing zone. It warns you not to begin an overtaking maneuver in that zone.

Source: Missouri Driver Guide, August 2026; PDF page 47, printed page 45; Sign Shapes. ↗

  24. A brown guide sign is most likely to direct you to which destination?

Correct answer: A public recreation or cultural-interest site.

Brown signs identify public recreation and cultural-interest destinations. They are distinct from blue motorist-service signs.

Source: Missouri Driver Guide, August 2026; PDF page 47, printed page 45; Sign Colors. ↗

  25. What is the important difference between an Added Lane warning and a Merge warning?

Correct answer: An added lane gives entering traffic its own lane.

With an added lane, entering traffic has a new lane, so an immediate merge is not required. Continue to watch for lane changes and follow subsequent markings.
