  1. An adult Montana resident holds an ordinary driver license without a motorcycle endorsement or learner authority. May that person ride a conventional two-wheel motorcycle on public highways?

Correct answer: No. The license must carry the required motorcycle endorsement before independent riding.

An ordinary driver license alone does not authorize independent operation of a conventional two-wheel motorcycle. The statute requires the appropriate endorsement; this question does not concern an autocycle or three-wheel exception.

Source: Montana Code Annotated 2025, §61-5-102(2)(a)(i): motorcycle endorsement; exceptions in (ii)–(iii) are outside this two-wheel scenario. Official current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  2. A Montana motorcycle learner license has just been issued. What is its ordinary period of validity?

Correct answer: One year from issuance.

The learner license is valid for one year from issuance. While practicing on a public highway, the rider must have the license in immediate possession and satisfy the motorcycle-specific supervision and passenger restrictions.

Source: Montana Code Annotated 2025, §61-5-106(1)(a), (c): one-year validity and motorcycle learner conditions. Official current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  3. A Montana motorcycle learner proposes carrying an experienced endorsed rider on the rear seat as the supervisor. Is that permitted?

Correct answer: No. A motorcycle learner may not carry a passenger; the qualified supervisor must operate a separate vehicle.

The motorcycle learner rule forbids carrying a passenger. Its supervision provisions use a separate motorcycle or other motor vehicle, not a supervising passenger.

Source: Montana Code Annotated 2025, §61-5-106(1)(c)(i)–(ii): no passenger and separate-vehicle supervision. Official current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  4. A 17-year-old Montana motorcycle learner has not completed a certified cooperative motorcycle course. Which arrangement meets the ordinary supervision rule?

Correct answer: A motorcycle-endorsed licensed driver age 18 or older rides nearby in a separate motorcycle or other motor vehicle, maintaining immediate and proximate visual supervision.

For a learner under 18, the supervisor must be at least 18. Without the certified-course alternative, that supervisor must also have a motorcycle endorsement and remain in immediate, proximate visual supervision from a separate vehicle.

Source: Montana Code Annotated 2025, §61-5-106(1)(c), (i): under-18 supervisor age and endorsed-driver pathway. Official current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  5. A 17-year-old Montana motorcycle learner has successfully completed a motorcycle safety course through a certified cooperative driver testing program. What supervisor alternative does the statute allow?

Correct answer: A licensed driver age 18 or older in a separate motor vehicle may provide immediate and proximate visual supervision, even without a motorcycle endorsement.

Completion of the specifically certified course allows the separate-vehicle licensed-driver alternative. It does not remove the learner’s visual-supervision, age, possession or no-passenger conditions.

Source: Montana Code Annotated 2025, §61-5-106(1)(c)(ii): certified cooperative-course alternative; supervisor age in (c). Official current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  6. A first-time Montana motorcycle endorsement applicant has no applicable test waiver. Which examination components does state law prescribe?

Correct answer: Vision, knowledge, and an on-road or skills demonstration of safe motorcycle control.

The law requires eyesight, knowledge and road or skills examinations unless an authorized waiver applies. The practical test uses a representative vehicle; this is not a claim about the number of exam questions or a passing percentage.

  7. According to MVD’s motorcycle instructions, what may successful completion of an approved Montana MSF Basic Rider Course replace?

Correct answer: The motorcycle drive test, when the qualifying course card is presented.

MVD describes a possible drive-test waiver for the approved course and asks the applicant to present the MSF completion card. Course completion is not itself an endorsed driver license.

  8. A civilian completed a qualifying out-of-state motorcycle safety course and wants Montana’s skills-test waiver. What deadline does form 21-1304 specify for applying?

Correct answer: Apply within one year after successfully completing the course.

The current application calls for applying within one year of successful course completion and submitting the course proof. The organization and instructor must have been certified when the training occurred; headquarters reviews the request.

  9. An adult rider plans to carry a 16-year-old passenger on a Montana public-highway motorcycle trip. What does Montana’s helmet law require for the passenger?

Correct answer: The passenger must wear protective headgear meeting the Department of Justice’s standards.

Montana requires compliant protective headgear for motorcycle operators and passengers under 18. An operator may not take an under-18 passenger onto a highway without that compliance; helmet use remains sound safety practice for adults too.

Source: Montana Code Annotated 2025, §61-9-417(1)–(2): under-18 protective headgear and operator responsibility. Official current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  10. For Montana’s two-wheel lane-filtering permission, which pair correctly states the maximum speeds of the overtaken traffic and the filtering motorcycle?

Correct answer: Overtaken traffic: 10 mph; filtering motorcycle: 20 mph.

The law defines filtering around same-direction, same-lane traffic that is stopped or moving no faster than 10 mph. The overtaking motorcycle may not exceed 20 mph, and the safe-width and reasonable-operation conditions must also be met.

Source: Montana Code Annotated 2025, §61-8-392(1)(b), (2): filtering and overtaken-traffic speed limits. Official current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  11. Traffic is stopped and you would filter at 15 mph, but the lane is too narrow to pass safely beside the vehicles. Does staying below the speed ceiling make filtering lawful?

Correct answer: No. The lane must also be wide enough for a safe pass, with continued reasonable and prudent operation.

Speed is only one condition. Insufficient safe width or other unsafe conditions remove the permission; the law does not guarantee a usable path merely because traffic is stopped.

Source: Montana Code Annotated 2025, §61-8-392(1)(a), (c): safe lane width and continued reasonable and prudent operation. Official current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  12. A driver tells a Montana motorcyclist to stay against the edge so the car can squeeze alongside in the same lane. Which legal principle applies?

Correct answer: The motorcycle is entitled to full use of the traffic lane.

Montana gives motorcycles full use of a traffic lane and bars operation that deprives another vehicle of that use. The law’s limited motorcycle exceptions do not give a car permission to crowd a rider.

Source: Montana Code Annotated 2025, §61-8-359(7): full-lane use and limited consensual motorcycle exception. Official current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗
