  1. Heavy rain and poor visibility make the posted speed too fast for the road conditions. What should govern your speed?

Correct answer: A reasonable and prudent speed for the actual and potential hazards.

The basic speed rule requires reasonable and prudent speed for existing conditions and hazards. Staying at a posted limit is not a defense to choosing a speed that is unsafe for those conditions.

Source: New Hampshire RSA §265:60, I, reasonable/prudent speed and collision avoidance; official General Court HTML chapter body read October 1, 2026. Selected codified road-rule foundation, not a complete DMV handbook or licensing review. ↗

  2. You approach a hillcrest that limits your view of the road ahead. Which response fits New Hampshire’s reduced-speed rule?

Correct answer: Approach at an appropriately reduced speed for the hazard.

The statute calls for appropriately reduced speed when approaching a hillcrest, consistent with the basic prudent-speed rule. A separate warning sign or a visible obstacle is not required to recognize the hazard.

Source: New Hampshire RSA §265:60, IV, approaching a hillcrest; consistency with I; official General Court HTML chapter body read October 1, 2026. Selected codified road-rule foundation, not a complete DMV handbook or licensing review. ↗

  3. An icy road requires a slower speed for safe operation, although traffic behind you must also slow. Does the rule against impeding traffic require an unsafe increase in speed?

Correct answer: No. Reduced speed necessary for safe operation is an express exception.

The slow-speed prohibition excepts reduced speed necessary for safe operation or compliance with law. It does not require driving too fast for an icy roadway.

Source: New Hampshire RSA §265:64, I, safety/compliance exception to slow-speed prohibition; official General Court HTML chapter body read October 1, 2026. Selected codified road-rule foundation, not a complete DMV handbook or licensing review. ↗
