  1. During a practice vehicle inspection, you name a steering part and then move on without describing its condition. What is still needed?

Correct answer: Point to the part and explain what defects you are checking for

The practical inspection requires identifying the item and explaining what you inspect it for. Naming a part or recalling yesterday's operation does not demonstrate that you can assess its present condition.

  2. You are preparing the manual's vehicle-inspection checklist for use during the test. Which preparation follows its instructions?

Correct answer: Bring the checklist without added notes and check items off as completed

The manual permits the supplied checklist and check marks as items are completed. It does not permit additional notes placed on it beforehand or learner-added component labels on the test vehicle.

Source: New Jersey CDL Manual, March 2025 cover; Section 11, March 2025 footer, printed 11-1, physical 139 > Section 11 introduction, permitted checklist and no prior additional writing. ↗

  3. Your training truck is stopped, secured with its parking brake and in neutral. How should you climb down from the cab?

Correct answer: Face the truck and maintain three points of contact

Face the truck and keep three points of contact while entering or exiting. The manual describes a different forward-facing handrail method for bus entry; this scenario is specifically a truck.

Source: New Jersey CDL Manual, March 2025 cover; Section 11, March 2025 footer, printed 11-1, physical 139 > Section 11 introduction, truck entry and exit; bus distinction retained. ↗

  4. The left-turn arrow flashes on the dashboard during a practice inspection. What still needs to be verified about the vehicle's external turn signals?

Correct answer: That the external left-turn lights actually operate

Dashboard indicators and external lights are checked separately. A working dash arrow alone does not demonstrate that the outside lamps illuminate; the manual permits examiner assistance with the external observation.

Source: New Jersey CDL Manual, March 2025 cover; Section 11, March 2025 footer, printed 11-5, physical 143 > 11.4 Lights Operations Check; also 11.1.1 Lighting Indicators, printed 11-1, physical 139. ↗

  5. During a practice inspection, the washer reservoir contains fluid. What further check demonstrates that the washers function?

Correct answer: Activate them and verify that they operate correctly

The washer check includes fluid availability and actual operation. Fluid in the tank alone does not establish that the system delivers it when activated.

    Source: New Jersey CDL Manual, March 2025 cover; Section 11, March 2025 footer, printed 11-2, physical 140 > 11.1.1 In-Vehicle/Engine Start, Wipers/Washers. ↗

  6. A training vehicle's fire extinguisher is properly charged, but it lies loose on the floor. What remains to be corrected?

Correct answer: It needs to be secured in its proper mounting

The inspection checks that the extinguisher is both properly charged and secured. A loose or merely wedged extinguisher has not met the securement condition.

Source: New Jersey CDL Manual, March 2025 cover; Section 11, March 2025 footer, printed 11-2, physical 140 > 11.1.1 Emergency Equipment, fire-extinguisher charge and securement. ↗

  7. The engine has just been shut off and remains hot. A trainee wants to remove the radiator cap to demonstrate a coolant check. What should the trainee do?

Correct answer: Leave the radiator cap in place while the engine is hot

The critical-fluid inspection explicitly warns against removing a radiator cap from a hot engine. Demonstrate the appropriate inspection method for the vehicle without opening the hot system.

  8. During a practice inspection, a visible steering linkage joint has excessive looseness. Why is that finding important?

Correct answer: It can cause wandering or loss of steering control

Worn or loose steering connections can prevent reliable wheel control. The inspection examines links, arms, rods, joints and sockets for wear, damage and looseness.

Source: New Jersey CDL Manual, March 2025 cover; Section 11, March 2025 footer, printed 11-6, physical 144 > 11.5.1 Steering System, Why Inspect and connecting-link checks. ↗

  9. A training truck has conventional tires without an automatic inflation or pressure-monitoring system. Which method should you describe for measuring their inflation?

Correct answer: Use a tire-pressure gauge

For this conventional setup, the manual requires a tire gauge. Kicking the tire or observing its tread does not measure inflation pressure.

Source: New Jersey CDL Manual, March 2025 cover; Section 11, March 2025 footer, printed 11-6, physical 144 > 11.5.2 Axle Components/Steering Axle, Tires; conventional gauge method, automated-system branch excluded. ↗

  10. You notice elongated bolt holes in a wheel during a practice inspection. How should you describe the finding?

Correct answer: A wheel defect that needs attention

The rim inspection checks that bolt holes have not become elongated or out of round. A tire retaining air does not establish that the wheel's attachment areas are sound.

Source: New Jersey CDL Manual, March 2025 cover; Section 11, March 2025 footer, printed 11-7, physical 145 > 11.5.2 Rims, bolt-hole condition. ↗

  11. Every lug nut is present, but rust trails and shiny threads appear around some fasteners. What should you explain during the inspection?

Correct answer: The marks can indicate looseness that needs checking

The manual lists rust trails and shiny threads as possible signs of loose lug nuts. Counting the nuts alone does not verify that they are secure.

Source: New Jersey CDL Manual, March 2025 cover; Section 11, March 2025 footer, printed 11-7, physical 145 > 11.5.2 Lug Nuts, rust trails and shiny threads. ↗

  12. A leaf spring has shifted from its normal position near a tire. What hazard should a trainee identify?

Correct answer: The spring may strike the tire or interfere with steering

A shifted spring can contact a tire, cause a blowout or interfere with steering. Its condition matters even before the vehicle is loaded.

Source: New Jersey CDL Manual, March 2025 cover; Section 11, March 2025 footer, printed 11-7, physical 145 > 11.5.2 Springs/Mounts, U-Bolts and Air Bags and Shocks, Why Inspect. ↗

  13. On a motor coach, suspension components are not visible or accessible from the inspection position. What response does the manual describe?

Correct answer: Explain the access limitation and check that the coach sits level

Tell the examiner when the components are not visible or accessible. Check front-to-rear and side-to-side level, and explain that leaning may indicate a suspension problem; a level stance does not prove every hidden part is sound.

Source: New Jersey CDL Manual, March 2025 cover; Section 11, March 2025 footer, printed 11-7, physical 145 > 11.5.2 Springs/Mounts, U-Bolts and Air Bags and Shocks, inaccessible bus components note. ↗
