  2. No sign prohibits a right turn on red. Before turning at the red light, which sequence is correct?

Correct answer: Stop, check all directions, yield, then turn

A permitted right turn on red requires a full stop, observation in all directions and yielding. Stop and remain stopped for pedestrians crossing the roadway into which you turn.

  3. Your signal turns green while a vehicle is still clearing the intersection across your path. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait for the conflict to clear

Green does not cancel the need to yield to vehicles still in the intersection. Proceed only when your path is clear.

  5. At an ordinary intersection, a flashing red signal faces you. How should you proceed?

Correct answer: Stop, yield, and go when safe

A flashing red intersection signal requires a stop, followed by yielding and proceeding only when safe. It is not treated like flashing yellow.

  6. You approach an intersection displaying a flashing yellow signal. What is the appropriate response?

Correct answer: Slow down and proceed with care

Flashing yellow warns you to slow down and proceed carefully. It does not provide an unconditional right-of-way.

  7. All signal lights at an intersection are dark after a power failure, and no officer is directing traffic. How should you treat the intersection?

Correct answer: As a four-way stop

The manual directs drivers to treat a completely unlit signal as a four-way stop. Stop, check traffic and proceed only when safe.

  9. A green left arrow appears beside a red signal. Your intended path is clear. Which movement does the arrow permit?

Correct answer: A cautious left turn

Proceed only in the direction shown by the green arrow, using caution and yielding to pedestrians. The arrow does not authorize every movement.

  10. At a yield sign, approaching cross traffic leaves no safe gap. What should you do?

Correct answer: Stop and wait for a safe opportunity

Slow for a yield sign and stop when necessary. Yield to intersecting traffic close enough to be an immediate hazard.

    Source: 2026 New Jersey Driver Manual, printed 67 (physical 69), Intersections / Controlled. P.L.2009, c.319 §4, complete R.S.39:4-144(b); effective 2010-04-01; Reviewed 2026-09-12. ↗

  11. Only your car and a car on your right arrive at an all-way stop at the same time. Both stop, and your paths conflict. Who should go first?

Correct answer: The driver on your right

When drivers arrive simultaneously at a multi-way stop, the driver on the left yields to the driver on the right.

  12. You are leaving a private driveway for a public road. A vehicle on the road is approaching your intended path. What should you do?

Correct answer: Yield to traffic on the public road

Traffic entering from a private driveway yields to traffic already on the main road. Do not force an approaching driver to create your gap.

  13. You have a circular green light and want to turn left. An oncoming car is close enough that your turn would cross its path. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait and yield to the oncoming car

A left-turning driver yields to oncoming traffic. A circular green light is not a protected left-turn arrow.

  14. No signs or markings provide a different turning path. How should you position your car for an ordinary right turn?

Correct answer: Close to the right curb or roadway edge

Approach and make the right turn as close as practicable to the right edge. Do not swing outward into another lane.

    Source: 2026 New Jersey Driver Manual, printed 72, 73 (physical 74, 75), Right Turns and right-turn diagrams. P.L.2009, c.319 §3, R.S.39:4-115(b), final approach-and-turn sentence; effective 2010-04-01; Reviewed 2026-09-12. ↗

  15. With a permitted green light, you turn left from a one-way street onto another one-way street. No signs designate another path. Which lane pairing is appropriate?

Correct answer: Left lane into left lane

For this one-way-to-one-way left turn, approach in the left lane and enter the left lane. This question concerns positioning on green, not permission to turn on red.

  16. You turn left from a two-way street onto a four-lane two-way road, with no special lane markings. Which receiving lane should you enter first?

Correct answer: The lane nearest the new road's center line

Enter the lane nearest the center line on the proper side of the new road. After completing the turn, move right when traffic permits.

  17. For the manual's minimum advance warning before a turn, how far before the turn should you begin signaling?

Correct answer: At least 100 feet

The manual directs drivers to signal at least 100 feet before a turn. Give other road users advance notice rather than signaling as the turn begins.

  19. The right lane is open and available. You are not passing, preparing for a left turn, or following a different posted lane assignment. Where should you normally drive?

Correct answer: In the lane nearest the right edge

The marked-lane rule normally places a vehicle in the available right-hand lane, subject to the specified exceptions and lane designations.

  20. Your turn signal is on, but a car remains in the lane space you want to enter. What should you do?

Correct answer: Stay in your lane until the move is safe

A signal communicates intent; it does not create a safe opening. Check traffic and blind spots, and leave your lane only after determining the movement can be made safely.

  21. Signs and pavement arrows mark your lane for left turns only. What do they tell you about using that lane through the intersection?

Correct answer: Use it for the indicated left turn

Road arrows used with lane-use signs specify the movement for that lane. A green light does not erase the lane's direction restriction.

  22. The broken center line on your side ends soon. You cannot finish a proposed pass before it becomes solid. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait for a suitable passing opportunity

A pass must be completed before the broken center line becomes solid. A short passing zone is not an invitation to start a maneuver you cannot finish properly.

  23. You are behind a slower car. The center-line pair is solid on your side and broken on the opposing side. May you cross it to pass?

Correct answer: No, the solid line is on your side

The line on your side controls your passing permission. A solid line on your side prohibits crossing it to pass, even if the opposite side is broken.

  24. A car ahead is waiting to turn left. The only space on its right is the road's shoulder. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait behind it rather than pass on the shoulder

The manual expressly prohibits using the right shoulder to pass. A vehicle waiting to turn left does not make the shoulder a passing lane.

  25. Another car is passing you on the left. Which response helps it finish safely?

Correct answer: Hold your lane and ease off your speed

Stay in the proper lane and slow to make the pass easier. Resume your normal speed after the passing vehicle is well ahead.

  26. You are in an acceleration lane. Traffic already on the expressway occupies the gap you hoped to use. Who must yield?

Correct answer: You, as the entering driver

An entering driver yields to traffic already on the main roadway and merges when safe. Use the acceleration lane to adjust speed without claiming an occupied gap.

  27. In a weave lane, your entrance path conflicts with a driver leaving the expressway. What should you do?

Correct answer: Yield to the exiting driver

Where an entrance and exit share a weave lane, the manual directs entering traffic to yield to the vehicle leaving the expressway.

  28. You pass your intended expressway exit before changing into the exit lane. What is the proper next step?

Correct answer: Continue to the next exit

If you miss an exit, continue to the next one. Do not back up or make an abrupt last-second maneuver across the roadway.

  29. Traffic is flowing normally and your exit lane is clear. Where should you begin slowing for the exit ramp?

Correct answer: As you enter the deceleration lane

Use the deceleration lane to reduce speed for the exit and observe its advisory speed. Avoid unnecessarily slowing the main traffic stream.

  30. Traffic is stopped just beyond a railroad crossing, leaving too little room for your whole car. No train warning is active. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait before the tracks until there is room

Make sure you can get completely across before entering a railroad crossing. The absence of an active train warning does not make the tracks a waiting area.

  31. A train has passed and the crossing gate is rising, but the red warning lights still flash. What should you do?

Correct answer: Remain stopped until all warnings end and it is safe

Do not cross until the gates are raised, bells have stopped and red lights have stopped flashing. Then confirm that crossing is safe.

  33. You approach a stopped school bus on the opposite roadway, separated from you by a raised median. It is loading children. How fast may you pass?

Correct answer: No more than 10 mph

For this physically separated opposing roadway, slow to no more than 10 mph. Keep that limit until you have passed the bus and any child entering or leaving it.

  34. A school bus is parked at the curb, loading children directly from a school on that same side of the street. Under this special rule, how may you pass?

Correct answer: Without stopping, but at no more than 10 mph

The curbside, same-side school loading exception permits passage without a stop, but no faster than 10 mph. It does not apply to an ordinary neighborhood pickup point.

  35. You approach a cyclist in a roadside bicycle lane. A safe, legal change to a lane not adjacent to the cyclist is possible. What should you do?

Correct answer: Move into that nonadjacent lane

The Safe Passing sequence first calls for a lane change away from the vulnerable road user when existing safety and traffic conditions permit it.

  36. You approach a cyclist in a roadside bicycle lane. A lane change cannot be made, but a safe pass is possible. What minimum clearance must you maintain through the pass?

Correct answer: At least four feet

When the lane-change option cannot be used, leave at least four feet while approaching and maintain that clearance until safely past. If that cannot be done safely, the slower-speed fallback applies.

  37. A posted 20-mph road leaves no safe lane change or four-foot clearance past a cyclist in a bicycle lane. What should you do?

Correct answer: Slow to 20 mph or less, ready to stop; pass only if safe

The fallback is 25 mph or a lower posted speed, with readiness to stop. It never authorizes an unsafe pass or violating a no-passing restriction.
