  1. You have a valid New Mexico Class D car license but no motorcycle endorsement. Before riding an ordinary street motorcycle on a highway, what additional licensing authority do you need?

Correct answer: The appropriate motorcycle endorsement on a valid license.

New Mexico requires a valid license with the appropriate W, Y or Z motorcycle endorsement for highway motorcycle operation. A car license without a motorcycle endorsement is not enough; adding an endorsement does not always require replacing it with a motorcycle-only license.

  2. An otherwise qualified adult wants to ride a two-wheeled motorcycle with a 125 cc engine. Which New Mexico motorcycle endorsement matches that engine size?

    Correct answer: W.

W covers motorcycles with engines of 100 cc or more. Y covers at least 50 but less than 100 cc, and Z covers less than 50 cc. The 125 cc motorcycle therefore requires W; this size classification does not itself establish an applicant’s age eligibility.

Source: NMAC 18.19.5.31, Driver License Endorsements, complete W/Y/Z table, retained reader lines 367–376; replacement annotation March 14, 2023. 3. An adult operator is otherwise authorized to carry a passenger on a motorcycle in New Mexico. The passenger is 17. What helmet requirement applies to the passenger?

Correct answer: The passenger must wear a securely fastened safety helmet meeting the required federal standards.

The under-18 helmet requirement covers passengers as well as operators. The operator’s adulthood does not remove a 17-year-old passenger’s duty to wear a qualifying, securely fastened helmet.

  4. A 16-year-old licensed motorcycle operator is choosing a helmet for a New Mexico road ride. Which choice meets the stated helmet requirement?

Correct answer: A helmet meeting Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 218, securely fastened on the rider’s head.

The helmet standard for an under-18 motorcycle operator is FMVSS 218. The helmet must also be worn securely fastened; owning or carrying a compliant helmet does not satisfy the wearing requirement.

Source: NMAC 18.19.7.9, Helmet Standard, retained reader lines 48–50; section annotation renumbered September 14, 2000. Secure fastening: New Mexico MVD Chapter 2, Section C, revised June 22, 2022, retained reader lines 227–228, https://www.mvd.newmexico.gov/chapter-2-non-commercial-license/. 5. A 16-year-old has just received a first-ever driver license authorizing motorcycle operation. The motorcycle has a passenger seat and footrests, and an adult friend has a qualifying helmet. May the new licensee carry that friend?

Correct answer: No; a first-time license holder whose license is issued under age 18 may not carry a motorcycle passenger.

MVD defines an initial licensee here as a first-time license holder whose license is issued under age 18 and states that such a licensee may not carry any motorcycle passenger. Passenger equipment, a helmet or the passenger’s own license does not remove that restriction.

Source: New Mexico MVD Driver Procedures Manual, Chapter 2, Section C: Motorcycles, revised June 22, 2022; initial licensee definition and passenger restriction, retained reader line 236. 6. A 24-year-old is adding a New Mexico motorcycle endorsement and has not taken the MSF Basic Rider Course. Which statement correctly describes the course and road-test options?

Correct answer: The adult may take the road test on a motorcycle sized for the endorsement instead of completing the course.

For applicants age 18 and over, MVD describes an appropriate-size motorcycle road test or satisfactory MSF Basic Rider Course completion. The course is not mandatory for every adult, and the motorcycle used for testing must fit the endorsement sought. This does not remove other licensing or knowledge-test requirements.

Source: New Mexico MVD Driver Procedures Manual, Chapter 2, Section C: Motorcycles, revised June 22, 2022; Motorcycle drivers age 18 and over, retained reader lines 246–247. Primary HTML read September 29, 2026; actual retained paragraphs recovered and author-reviewed October 1, 2026. No new source fetch; reader line numbers are not PDF pages. ↗

  7. An adult adding a New Mexico motorcycle endorsement has passed the appropriate motorcycle road test but has not taken the MSF Basic Rider Course. What about the written motorcycle knowledge test?

Correct answer: It is still required when the adult has not taken the MSF Basic Rider Course.

The adult testing paragraph separately requires successful completion of the written motorcycle knowledge test when the applicant has not taken the MSF Basic Rider Course. Passing the road test alone does not meet that separate requirement.

Source: New Mexico MVD Driver Procedures Manual, Chapter 2, Section C: Motorcycles, revised June 22, 2022; Motorcycle drivers age 18 and over, retained reader lines 246–248, especially the separate written-test sentence at line 248. Primary HTML read September 29, 2026; actual retained paragraphs recovered and author-reviewed October 1, 2026. No new source fetch; reader line numbers are not PDF pages. ↗

  8. A 15-year-old applying for a New Mexico motorcycle license completes the MSF Basic Rider Course. The requested endorsement matches the motorcycle used to qualify, and the applicant holds no current Class D permit, provisional license or license. Which statement is correct?

Correct answer: The course certificate can waive the road test, but the written motorcycle knowledge test is still required.

For the age-15 path, the course certificate waives the road test only when the endorsement matches the qualifying motorcycle. The written motorcycle knowledge test remains required unless the applicant holds a current Class D permit, provisional license or license; this applicant holds none of those.

Source: New Mexico MVD Driver Procedures Manual, Chapter 2, Section C: Motorcycles, revised June 22, 2022; Motorcycle license or endorsement at age 15, retained reader lines 237–240, including the qualifying-motorcycle condition and current-Class-D exception. Primary HTML read September 29, 2026; actual retained paragraphs recovered and author-reviewed October 1, 2026. No new source fetch; reader line numbers are not PDF pages. ↗
