  1. An adult holds a regular North Carolina Class C license but no motorcycle permit or endorsement. The adult has practiced riding on private property. What additional licensing credential is needed before riding an ordinary motorcycle on a highway?

Correct answer: A motorcycle learner permit or motorcycle endorsement with the qualifying license

A regular car license alone does not authorize motorcycle highway operation. G.S. 20-7(a1) requires the qualifying license together with a motorcycle learner permit or endorsement; practice experience does not replace that credential.

Source: Article 2, G.S. 20-7(a), (a1), complete motorcycle credential combinations; (a3) separately excludes autocycles. Current official text reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  2. An adult with a valid North Carolina regular driver license is ready to meet the motorcycle endorsement requirements directly. Must the adult first hold a motorcycle learner permit?

Correct answer: No; a permit is optional before applying for the endorsement

NCDMV expressly states that a motorcycle learner permit is not required before applying for an endorsement. The applicant still must satisfy the applicable endorsement requirements; bypassing the optional permit does not waive those requirements.

Source: NCDMV Motorcycle & Moped Privileges, 'Motorcycle Learner Permits,' optional permit statement; G.S. 20-7(a1), endorsement requirements. Page updated May 18, 2026; reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  3. A 17-year-old holds a North Carolina Level 2 limited provisional license and asks for a motorcycle learner permit. Which underlying-license condition is not yet satisfied?

Correct answer: The applicant must hold a full provisional license

For an applicant at least 16 but under 18, G.S. 20-7(a2)(1) requires a Division-issued full provisional license. A Level 2 limited provisional license is not that credential.

  4. A 17-year-old with a North Carolina full provisional license is preparing for a motorcycle learner permit. Beyond the required tests, which training condition applies?

Correct answer: Successful completion of the specified Basic Rider Course or a Commissioner-approved equivalent

An applicant under 18 must successfully complete the North Carolina Motorcycle Safety Education Program Basic Rider Course or a Commissioner-approved course consistent with the statutory program. The permit's vision, sign and knowledge tests are separate requirements.

Source: Article 2, G.S. 20-7(a2), full testing and less-than-18 approved-course paragraph. The legal cutoff is under 18, not the NCDMV page's '16–18' heading. Reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  5. Which set of examinations does North Carolina law specify for obtaining a motorcycle learner permit?

Correct answer: Vision, road-sign and motorcycle knowledge tests

G.S. 20-7(a2) specifies a vision test, road-sign test and Division knowledge test for the motorcycle learner permit. It does not substitute a motorcycle road test for these permit examinations; under-18 course and underlying-license conditions also apply.

Source: Article 2, G.S. 20-7(a2), complete permit examination and eligibility provisions; NCDMV motorcycle permit requirements. Reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  6. A North Carolina motorcycle learner permit has just been issued. What is its ordinary initial validity period, before any permitted renewal?

    Correct answer: Twelve months

A motorcycle learner permit expires twelve months after issuance. This is its initial term, not the separate one-time additional six-month renewal or the different ordinary adult car learner-permit term.

Source: Article 2, G.S. 20-7(a2), motorcycle-permit expiration sentence; contrasted with separate (l). Current official text reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  7. A rider has reached the end of the initial North Carolina motorcycle learner-permit term and wants to renew that permit. What renewal does the statute allow?

Correct answer: One additional six-month period

G.S. 20-7(a2) allows one additional six-month renewal. Do not confuse this limited extension with either the permit's original twelve-month term or the adult car learner-permit rules.

    Source: Article 2, G.S. 20-7(a2), complete original-term and one-renewal sentence. Current official text reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  8. A 30-year-old holds a valid North Carolina motorcycle learner permit and rides a motorcycle equipped for two people. May the permit holder carry an experienced adult rider as a passenger?

Correct answer: No; a motorcycle learner-permit holder may not carry a passenger

The motorcycle learner-permit passenger prohibition applies to the permit holder regardless of age or the passenger's experience. Equipment suitable for two people does not remove the permit restriction.

    Source: Article 2, G.S. 20-7(a2), complete no-passenger sentence. Current official text reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  9. An applicant has just turned 18, holds a regular North Carolina driver license and has passed the motorcycle knowledge test. The applicant has no approved motorcycle course certificate. Which route can satisfy the endorsement's riding-competence requirement?

Correct answer: Pass the motorcycle road test

For a person age 18 or older, G.S. 20-7(a1) allows a motorcycle road test or proof of successful completion of a listed or approved course, in addition to the knowledge test. The special under-18 mandatory-course provision does not include someone who is already 18.

    Source: Article 2, G.S. 20-7(a1), complete age-18-or-older knowledge plus road-test/course alternatives and separate less-than-18 paragraph. Reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  10. A 17-year-old with a North Carolina full provisional license passes the motorcycle knowledge test and asks to replace the required approved rider course with an NCDMV motorcycle road test. What does the under-18 endorsement rule require?

Correct answer: Proof of successful completion of a listed or Commissioner-approved rider course

For an endorsement applicant under 18, G.S. 20-7(a1) requires the motorcycle knowledge test and successful completion of a listed or Commissioner-approved course. The road-test alternative stated for adults is not the under-18 route.

Source: Article 2, G.S. 20-7(a1), complete less-than-18 endorsement paragraph and course list, contrasted with adult paragraph. Reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  11. An adult North Carolina license holder completes an approved rider course whose proof satisfies the endorsement's riding-competence requirement. Which examination requirement still remains if it has not already been met?

Correct answer: The motorcycle knowledge test

An accepted course can satisfy the riding-competence alternative, but the statute still requires the motorcycle knowledge test. NCDMV likewise says course-based skills-test relief does not remove the knowledge requirement.

Source: Article 2, G.S. 20-7(a1), adult knowledge test plus road-test-or-approved-course structure; NCDMV motorcycle endorsement/course guidance. Reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

  12. A 17-year-old has a North Carolina full provisional license with a motorcycle endorsement, rather than a learner permit. The motorcycle is equipped for a passenger. What age-related restriction still applies?

Correct answer: The under-18 endorsed rider may not carry a passenger

G.S. 20-7(a1) expressly prohibits a person under 18 with a motorcycle endorsement from driving a motorcycle with a passenger. Earning the endorsement does not remove that age-related restriction.

Source: Article 2, G.S. 20-7(a1), complete under-18 endorsement passenger sentence and surrounding endorsement provisions. Reviewed September 13, 2026. ↗

Motorcycle licensing supplement

12 administrative questions about motorcycle permits and endorsements. This separate supplement is not included in the two-wheel rider-safety question set.

Age-specific requirements use current North Carolina statutes. A training course does not remove the motorcycle knowledge-test requirement. Study grouping is not a claim that licensing topics are excluded from the official test. Check current NCDMV application guidance.
