  1. A rider has only an Ohio motorcycle TIPIC. The rider proposes a public-road practice trip well after sunset, with a working headlight and reflective clothing. Which statement is correct?

Correct answer: The permit does not authorize the after-sunset ride.

The permit restriction prohibits operation during the sunset-to-sunrise period referenced by the statute. Lighting, reflective gear or another rider do not create a night-practice exception.

Source: ORC 4511.53(C)(3)(b)(i), effective March 8, 2019, referencing ORC 4513.03(A)(1), effective October 16, 2009, sunset to sunrise. ↗

  2. A lightly traveled Ohio state highway is a limited-access highway but is not an interstate. May a motorcycle TIPIC holder practice there simply because it is not an interstate?

Correct answer: No; the restriction covers any limited-access highway.

The motorcycle permit statute prohibits any limited-access highway, not just interstates. It also separately prohibits heavily congested roadways; light traffic does not remove the limited-access restriction.

Source: ORC 4511.53(C)(3)(b)(iii), limited-access highway or heavily congested roadway; effective March 8, 2019. ↗

  3. A fully motorcycle-licensed 17-year-old rides a conventional two-wheel motorcycle on an Ohio highway. Which fact makes a qualifying helmet legally required?

Correct answer: The rider is still under eighteen years old.

Ohio requires a qualifying helmet for an operator under 18 on a highway. Having a full credential or a windscreen does not remove that age-based helmet duty for an ordinary two-wheel motorcycle.

Source: ORC 4511.53(C)(1)–(2), under-eighteen helmet requirement and narrow enclosed-vehicle exception; effective March 8, 2019. ↗

  4. A 35-year-old's Ohio motorcycle endorsement still bears an effective novice designation. For a highway trip on a conventional two-wheel motorcycle, which helmet rule applies?

Correct answer: A qualifying helmet is required while novice status is effective.

The helmet requirement applies to an operator with a currently effective novice designation even when the operator is an adult. Course completion does not cancel an effective novice designation.

Source: ORC 4511.53(C)(1), current novice designation and helmet duty; effective March 8, 2019. ↗

  5. A 40-year-old passenger who is not a novice rides behind an adult operator whose Ohio novice designation is still effective. They are on a conventional two-wheel motorcycle on an Ohio highway. What is the passenger's helmet duty?

Correct answer: The passenger must also wear a qualifying protective helmet.

Ohio extends the helmet duty to other passengers on a motorcycle operated by a person covered by the under-18 or effective-novice helmet rule. The passenger's own age and experience do not remove that duty.

Source: ORC 4511.53(C)(1), helmet for other passengers riding with an operator subject to the age/novice rule; effective March 8, 2019. ↗

  6. For an Ohio highway ride, a novice puts on a qualifying motorcycle helmet but leaves its chin strap loose and unfastened. Does that satisfy the required-helmet rule?

Correct answer: No; the required helmet's chin strap must be properly fastened.

For riders subject to Ohio's helmet rule, the helmet must be worn with the chin strap properly fastened. Simply placing the helmet on the head does not meet that requirement.

Source: OAC 4501-17-01(A) and (D), required helmet/chin strap and conformity; effective July 1, 1985, read with ORC 4511.53(C). ↗

  7. A motorcycle windscreen uses the transparent, shatter-resistant material required by Ohio's eye-device rule. What else must its height, construction and durability accomplish to qualify?

Correct answer: Actually protect the rider when seated in the normal riding position.

Ohio recognizes a windscreen as an eye device only when its height, construction and durability actually protect normally seated riders, along with the applicable material requirements. Merely fitting any clear screen is not enough.

    Source: OAC 4501-17-04(C), (E)–(F), qualifying windscreen and protective-eye-device material; effective July 1, 1985. ↗

  8. Ohio's motorcycle highway-operation rule limits handlebar height relative to the operator while seated on the motorcycle. What is the stated maximum reference?

Correct answer: The operator's shoulder height.

The current statute prohibits highway operation when the handlebars rise higher than the seated operator's shoulders. The former fixed measurement above the seat is not the current wording.

    Source: ORC 4511.53(B), final sentence, seated-operator shoulder-height limit; effective March 8, 2019. ↗

  9. A passenger is using the properly attached saddle of a conventional two-wheel motorcycle. Which position matches Ohio's saddle-position rule?

Correct answer: Facing forward with one leg on each side.

A person riding on a motorcycle equipped with a saddle must sit astride it, face forward and keep one leg on each side. This question concerns a saddle-equipped two-wheel motorcycle, not other vehicle seating designs.

Source: ORC 4511.53(B), motorcycle permanent saddle and astride/forward-facing position paragraphs; effective March 8, 2019. ↗

  10. A fully licensed rider's conventional two-wheel motorcycle is designed and equipped for one person only. A friend asks to ride along. What must the rider do under Ohio's capacity rule?

Correct answer: Do not carry the friend on that one-person motorcycle.

A motorcycle may not carry more people than it is designed and equipped to carry. Helmets, a low speed limit or rider experience do not create an extra passenger position.

Source: ORC 4511.53(B), designed-and-equipped person capacity and attached seat/saddle requirements; effective March 8, 2019. ↗
