  1. You have permission to use a motorcycle that handles differently from yours. What is the safer way to become familiar with it?

Correct answer: Practice in a controlled area before joining traffic

Motorcycles differ in responsiveness. A controlled setting lets you learn the machine without ordinary traffic demands.

  2. Which group of items belongs in a motorcycle's check before a ride?

Correct answer: Tires, brakes, lights and fluid levels

Checking the systems that support grip, stopping, visibility and operation can reveal problems before departure.

Source: NHTSA, Motorcycle Safety > Before Every Ride, first sentence (HTML practical guidance) ↗

  3. Before riding, you notice fresh liquid beneath the motorcycle. What possible problem should you check for?

Correct answer: An oil or fuel leak

NHTSA specifically recommends checking under the bike for oil or gasoline leaks; do not dismiss an unexplained fluid patch.

  4. You are packing a motorcycle for a trip. What is the safer loading approach?

Correct answer: Secure the luggage and balance the load

A balanced, secured load avoids needless shifting and uneven loading during the ride.

Source: NHTSA, Motorcycle Safety > Before Every Ride, cargo sentence (HTML practical guidance) ↗

  5. You add luggage within your motorcycle's load limits. What settings may need attention before riding?

Correct answer: Suspension and tire pressure for the added weight

NHTSA calls for suspension and pressure adjustment to accommodate cargo; use the motorcycle's specified settings rather than a universal pressure value.

Source: NHTSA, Motorcycle Safety > Before Every Ride, suspension and tire-pressure sentence (HTML practical guidance) ↗

  6. On a passenger-equipped two-wheel motorcycle, where should a passenger keep their feet during an ordinary stop?

Correct answer: On the passenger footrests

Keeping feet on the rests provides secure footing and avoids unexpected balancing movements; legs and feet should stay away from the muffler.

  7. During an ordinary turn on a two-wheel motorcycle, what should a passenger do?

Correct answer: Stay directly behind and lean with the rider

A passenger should minimize movement and lean in the rider's direction rather than make conflicting movements.

Source: NHTSA, Motorcycle Safety > Before Every Ride, passenger position and lean guidance (HTML practical guidance) ↗

  8. A passenger wants to get off a motorcycle at a destination. What should happen first?

Correct answer: The rider should say it is safe to dismount

Coordinating the dismount prevents an unexpected movement while the rider is still controlling the motorcycle.

Source: NHTSA, Motorcycle Safety > Before Every Ride, final sentence (HTML practical guidance) ↗

  9. Which fit is desirable when choosing a motorcycle helmet?

Correct answer: Snug and stable, with no painful pressure points

NHTSA describes a properly sized helmet as snug and stable, not loose or painfully concentrated at one point.

Source: NHTSA, Choose the Right Motorcycle Helmet > Find Your Fit > Size (HTML practical guidance) ↗

  10. A helmet does not fit comfortably. Which approach avoids compromising its protective structure?

Correct answer: Use the manufacturer's fit adjustments or another helmet

Manufacturer-provided pads and liners may allow adjustment; other interior alterations can compromise helmet integrity.

Source: NHTSA, Choose the Right Motorcycle Helmet > Find Your Fit > Adjusting a Helmet (HTML practical guidance) ↗

  11. A seller calls a motorcycle helmet 'NHTSA-approved.' What should you know about that claim?

Correct answer: Manufacturers self-certify; NHTSA does not individually approve helmets

NHTSA explains that its process relies on self-certification and compliance testing, not individual product approval.

Source: NHTSA, Choose the Right Motorcycle Helmet > Check Safety Ratings, self-certification paragraph (HTML practical guidance) ↗

Ohio motorcycle practice

96 rider questions on riding safety, controls, cornering, mechanical emergencies and Ohio operating rules. Start a short set or choose fresh random practice.

Build your riding knowledge

Work through 7 short sets covering safety basics, control, cornering, inspection, hazards, emergencies and Ohio operating rules. It is not complete coverage of the operator manual. Use official study materials and approved training alongside it. Our questions are independent practice, not official exam questions or a substitute for supervised riding. Review general traffic rules and road signs alongside rider technique.

Riding-technique questions draw on NHTSA and the Motorcycle Safety Foundation guidance. Ohio permit and operating-rule questions follow Ohio guidance. The national manuals are not the Ohio licensing authority; follow your motorcycle’s instructions and learn emergency maneuvers with qualified instruction.

Three-wheel and sidecar practice

20 additional questions in two short sets on non-leaning trikes and right-mounted sidecars. These vehicle-specific questions stay separate from general rider practice and the random20 session.

Motorcycle licensing supplement

8 additional questions about permits, training and test preparation. They have a separate focus quiz and are not counted in the 96-question rider question set. This grouping does not mean their subjects are excluded from the official knowledge test.
