  1. After stopping at a circular red light, which left-turn route may be allowed if no device prohibits it and you yield as required?

Correct answer: From a one-way street into a one-way street

Ohio's circular-red left-turn permission is for a one-way-to-one-way movement. It requires a stop and the applicable yielding duties, and a prohibiting device controls.

  2. Your light is green, but stopped traffic leaves no room for your whole car beyond the intersection. What should you do?

Correct answer: Wait outside the intersection for enough space

A green signal does not override Ohio's rule against entering without enough space beyond the intersection to accommodate your vehicle without obstructing others.

Source: Ohio Revised Code 4511.712(A)-(B); current section effective 2025-06-30, reviewed 2026-09-12. ↗

  3. Official signs and pavement markings direct a different turning path from the ordinary curb-based turn rule. Which path must you follow?

Correct answer: The path required by the official signs and markings

Ohio authorizes official intersection markings or signs to direct a different course. When they are present, drivers must turn as they require.

Source: Ohio Revised Code 4511.36(C); current section effective 2018-10-29, reviewed 2026-09-12. ↗

  4. You have drawn ahead of a vehicle while passing on the left, but are not yet safely clear of it. May you move back right?

Correct answer: No; wait until you are safely clear

Ohio requires a passing driver to remain out until safely clear of the overtaken vehicle before returning right. Merely getting the front of your car ahead does not complete that clearance.

Source: Ohio Revised Code 4511.27(A)(1); current section effective 2018-10-29, reviewed 2026-09-12. ↗

  5. You are traveling below the prevailing lawful traffic speed. A safe right-hand lane is available, and you are not passing, preparing a left turn, or using another lane needed for your route. Where should you drive?

Correct answer: In the available right-hand lane

Under these conditions, slower traffic belongs in the available right lane and far enough right to allow safe, reasonable passing. The rule does not require compromising your safety.

Source: Ohio Revised Code 4511.25(B)(1)-(2); current section effective 2018-10-29, reviewed 2026-09-12. ↗

  6. You are parking a car in an ordinary right-curb space, and you can readily reach the curb. What maximum distance should separate the right-hand wheels from the curb?

    Correct answer: 12 inches

The ordinary rule requires the right-hand wheels parallel with and no more than 12 inches from the right curb. The narrow impossibility/loading qualification is not present in this scenario.

Source: Ohio Revised Code 4511.69(A); current section effective 2023-10-03, reviewed 2026-09-12. ↗

  7. On an ordinary street beside a school, posted school-zone signs show 20 mph. Children are leaving school during closing hours, but the signs have no flashing lights. Which speed rule applies?

Correct answer: The 20-mph school-zone rule still applies

Ohio's 20-mph school-zone rule applies under its posted-sign and recess/arrival/departure conditions. Flashing lights are not universally required, and this rule does not use a fixed statewide daily clock window.

Source: Ohio Revised Code 4511.21(B)(1)(a); current section effective 2025-06-30, reviewed 2026-09-12. ↗

  8. The train has passed and the crossing gate has begun opening. No law-enforcement officer or flagperson signals you through. May you drive under the moving gate?

Correct answer: No; wait rather than drive under a gate being opened

Ohio prohibits driving through, around, or under a closed, opening, or closing crossing gate unless a law-enforcement officer or flagperson signals that it is permissible. Check that all remaining crossing hazards are clear before proceeding.

  9. Your car is safely off the traveled road during a winter breakdown. There is no fire or other immediate danger, and help has been contacted. What is generally the safer choice?

Correct answer: Stay with the car and avoid overexertion

The winter guidance favors staying with the vehicle and conserving effort; immediate hazards would require a different assessment.

  10. The tread surface is worn level with the tire's built-in treadwear bars. What does NHTSA advise?

Correct answer: Replace the worn tires

Treadwear bars indicate that replacement is due; TPMS is not a tread-depth monitor.

  11. A sleep-deprived driver feels more alert after coffee. What should the driver remember?

Correct answer: Brief microsleeps may still occur

Caffeine alone may not prevent dangerous sleep episodes or restore adequate alertness.

Source: NHTSA, Drowsy Driving > Tips to Drive Alert > Short-Term Interventions, item 1 (HTML practical guidance; reviewed September 12, 2026) ↗

  12. Another car is stopped at a crosswalk, blocking your view across it. What danger should you anticipate?

Correct answer: A pedestrian may be hidden in front of that car

A stopped vehicle can conceal a crossing pedestrian from the next driver.

  13. Fog ahead is nearly opaque, and you can safely enter a nearby parking lot. What is the safer action?

Correct answer: Use flashers and enter the safe lot to stop

The NWS recommends a safe off-road stopping location when visibility is near zero.

  14. You are on the main roadway and see this warning. What should you expect from the right?

Correct answer: Traffic joining the flow through a merge

The curved stem joins the main arrow: traffic enters from the right and converges into the same lane.

  15. What road-surface hazard does this symbol warn about?

    Correct answer: Unexpected slippery conditions

The skidding-car symbol warns of unexpected slippery conditions. A supplemental plaque may explain the cause, such as wet pavement or ice.

    Source: FHWA MUTCD, 11th Edition with Revision 1 (December 2025), Section 2C.30, paragraphs 01, 07, W8-5; printed page 175 / physical PDF page 216 ↗

  16. On Ohio's 40-question knowledge test, a learner answers 17 of 20 road-law questions and 14 of 20 sign-and-signal questions correctly. What is the result?

Correct answer: Fail, because the sign-and-signal part needs at least 15 correct.

Ohio requires 75 percent in each component, not just across the combined test. With 20 questions per part, each requires 15 correct; a stronger law score cannot offset 14 in the other part.

Source: OAC 4501:1-1-08(A), second and third examination parts, minimum 20 questions and separate 75-percent thresholds; effective April 10, 2016. BMV First Issuance, Knowledge Test, confirms the current 40-question total. ↗

  17. A 19-year-old first-time Ohio car-license applicant has no applicable training exemption. What does current Ohio law require concerning driver training?

Correct answer: Approved driver training is still required before licensing.

The current law requires qualifying driver training for under-21 applicants, subject to its specified exceptions. Turning 18 does not itself create an exemption.

Source: ORC 4507.21(B)(1)(a)–(b) and (B)(4), under-21 driver-training requirement and specific exceptions; current composite version effective March 20, 2026. ↗

  18. A driver is still under 18 but has held an Ohio probationary license for 13 months. With no applicable exception, which hours are restricted for driving without a parent or guardian?

    Correct answer: 1 a.m. to 5 a.m.

After a probationary license has been held for at least 12 months, the ordinary restricted period is 1–5 a.m. The under-18 driver must still meet any applicable exception or accompanying-adult requirement.

Source: ORC 4507.071(B)(1)(b), probationary license held for 12 months or longer; exceptions in (B)(2)(b) and (C); effective July 1, 2015. ↗

  19. A 17-year-old Ohio probationary driver stops in a travel lane at a red traffic signal and wants to type a nonemergency message. Does the general adult stopped-signal exception permit this?

Correct answer: No; that exception is not part of the under-18 device rule.

The general law has a stationary-at-a-stop-signal exception, but the separate under-18 TIPIC/probationary rule does not. Its stopped-vehicle exception requires being outside a travel lane. Wait until safely stopped outside the lane to handle a nonemergency message.

    Source: ORC 4511.205(A), (B)(1)–(3), effective October 29, 2018; compare ORC 4511.204(B)(3), effective June 30, 2025. ↗

  20. A driver chooses a liability insurance policy to meet Ohio's minimum financial-responsibility amounts. In the order injury/death of one person, injury/death of two or more, and property damage, which amounts does the BMV list?

    Correct answer: $25,000 / $50,000 / $25,000.

The BMV lists minimum liability amounts of $25,000 for one person's injury/death, $50,000 for two or more people's injury/death, and $25,000 for property damage. These are minimum policy amounts, not a promise that all losses will be covered.
