Review all 20 questions with answers
  1. When may a DANGEROUS placard replace all separate Table 2 category placards on an otherwise qualifying mixed load?

Correct answer: For qualifying non-bulk packages needing different Table 2 placards, with no category at 2,205 lb or more loaded at one facility

DANGEROUS is optional for two or more non-bulk Table 2 categories requiring different placards. A category loaded at one facility at 1,000 kg (2,205 lb) or more must have its own placard. Bulk tanks do not qualify for this substitution.

Source: 49 CFR 172.504(b): DANGEROUS substitution and one-facility category threshold ↗

  2. Does the ordinary under-1,001-pound exception remove the placarding requirement for a material subject to the poison-inhalation-hazard placarding rule?

Correct answer: No; the required POISON INHALATION HAZARD or POISON GAS placard still applies

The weight exception does not apply to materials subject to 49 CFR 172.505. Use the appropriate required placard; the rules do not require duplicate poison-inhalation or poison-gas placards.

    Source: 49 CFR 172.505(a), read with 172.504(c), (f)(8), (f)(11): Poison-inhalation placarding; no duplication ↗

  3. With no applicable exception, must a bulk package containing only hazardous residue retain its required placards?

Correct answer: Yes, the required placards remain

Residue does not automatically remove placarding duties. Cleaning, purging or a specific exception may permit removal; an empty IBC must meet all applicable conditions in 173.29(d), not merely have been unloaded.

Source: 49 CFR 172.514(b), including (b)(4), and 173.29(d): Required bulk placards after emptying and conditional IBC exception ↗

  4. Which loading tool should not be used on HazMat packages?

Correct answer: A hook that could puncture or damage the package

Protect packaging from puncture or other damage during handling.

Source: Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License Manual PUB223(6-26), 9.4 Loading and Unloading, printed 9-12 (physical PDF page 146) ↗

  5. How must hazardous-material packages be secured?

Correct answer: Secure them against shifting and protect valves and fittings

Packages must be secured against movement under normal transportation conditions, including movement relative to one another. Load fittings so they are unlikely to be damaged.

Source: Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License Manual PUB223(6-26), 9.4.1 General Loading Requirements — Secure Against Movement, printed 9-12 (physical PDF page 146) ↗

  6. Which group is subject to the federal rule's special cargo-heater restrictions?

Correct answer: Explosives, flammable gases, and flammable liquids

Class 1 explosives require the cargo heater to be rendered inoperable as specified. Class 3 liquids and Division 2.1 gases have heater-type and equipment conditions; they are not a blanket permission to use any cargo heater.

Source: 49 CFR 177.834(l)(1)-(2): Cargo heaters with explosives and specified flammable materials ↗

  7. When a liner is required for Division 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 explosives, which material is permitted for the load-contact area?

Correct answer: Nonmetallic material or nonferrous metal

The rule specifies tight floors and a nonmetallic or nonferrous load-contact lining. Avoid projections that can damage packages; the rule has a narrow exception for qualifying military-loaded truckloads.

Source: 49 CFR 177.835(f): Explosives floor lining and qualifying military-load exception ↗

  8. Which vertical loading rule applies to a package of nitric acid at 50% concentration or greater?

Correct answer: It must not be placed above a package of any other material

The federal loading rule prohibits placing nitric acid of at least 50% concentration above other materials. A leak could cause a dangerous reaction below.

Source: 49 CFR 177.839(a): Nitric acid at 50 percent or greater not above other materials ↗

  9. What must the restraints for ordinary Class 2 gas cylinders prevent under normal transportation conditions?

Correct answer: Shifting, overturning, or ejection

Use suitable restraints, racks, boxes, or crates in an allowed upright or horizontal arrangement. Special cylinder rules still apply; an installed relief device on a flammable-gas cylinder must communicate with the vapor space.

Source: 49 CFR 177.840(a)(1): Gas cylinder restraints and flammable-gas relief device ↗

  10. May packages bearing or requiring POISON or POISON INHALATION HAZARD labels be carried with food or animal feed?

Correct answer: Only when the applicable packaging and segregation exception is fully satisfied

Do not treat ordinary separation as permission. The rule includes specified metal overpacks, separate closed unit-load devices, and a separate PG III condition. Poison-labeled packages are prohibited in the driver's compartment, including the sleeper.

Source: 49 CFR 177.841(e)(1)-(3): Poison packages with food; specified exceptions and driver-compartment prohibition ↗

  11. For an interstate commercial-motor-vehicle operation, under the general direct-attendance procedure for cargo-tank loading or unloading, what attendance is required?

Correct answer: A qualified person must continuously attend under that procedure

A qualified person continuously attends under the direct procedure, staying alert, within 25 feet, and with the view required for that operation. Hazard knowledge, emergency instruction, and applicable vehicle-movement requirements are part of qualification. Regulatory exceptions, remote monitoring, and special unloading procedures have separate conditions.

Source: 49 CFR 177.834(i)(1)-(4): Cargo-tank attendance, direct procedure, alternatives, and qualification ↗

  12. For an interstate commercial-motor-vehicle operation, which distance from the traveled part of a public highway violates the parking rule for Division 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 explosives?

    Correct answer: 4 feet

Do not park on or within 5 feet of the traveled roadway. Being farther away does not by itself make parking lawful: separate rules cover property-owner consent and 300-foot separation from specified structures and gathering places.

    Source: 49 CFR 397.7(a): Parking with Division 1.1, 1.2, or 1.3 explosives ↗

  13. For an interstate commercial-motor-vehicle operation, a cargo tank is carrying a placard-required load of flammable liquid. Smoking is prohibited on the vehicle and within what distance?

    Correct answer: 25 feet

Smoking is prohibited on the vehicle and within 25 feet of it for this hazardous cargo.

Source: 49 CFR 397.13(a): Smoking prohibition for specified hazardous loads, within 397.1 scope ↗

  14. For an interstate commercial-motor-vehicle operation, when refueling the propulsion fuel tank of a truck carrying a placard-required hazardous-material load, what is required?

Correct answer: Stop the engine and keep a person in control at the filling point

The engine must not run while fueling, and a person must control the process where the vehicle's fuel tank is filled.

Source: 49 CFR 397.15(a)-(b): Engine off and control at the filling point, within 397.1 scope ↗

  15. For an interstate commercial-motor-vehicle operation, what minimum extinguisher rating is required on a power unit transporting hazardous materials in a quantity requiring placarding?

    Correct answer: 10 B:C

A power unit carrying a placard-required quantity needs a UL-rated extinguisher of at least 10 B:C. The rule is based on the required placarding, not merely a voluntarily displayed placard.

    Source: 49 CFR 393.95(a)(1)(i): Extinguisher for placard-required hazardous-material quantity ↗

  16. For an interstate commercial-motor-vehicle operation, under the hazardous-material driving rules, when must the driver examine each tire on a vehicle required to be marked or placarded?

Correct answer: At the start of each trip and each time the vehicle is parked

Check at trip start and whenever parked. Correct an unsafe tire condition before continuing, subject to the rule's limited allowance to reach the nearest safe repair place for a flat, leaking, or improperly inflated tire.

Source: 49 CFR 397.17(a)-(d), within 397.1(a) scope: Tire examinations and unsafe-tire response ↗

  17. For an interstate commercial-motor-vehicle operation, at a railroad crossing with no legal stop exception, what must the driver of a placarded gasoline cargo tank do?

Correct answer: Stop 15 to 50 feet from the nearest rail, then look and listen before crossing

Stop at the required distance. Proceed only when no train is approaching and the entire vehicle can clear. Do not change gears on the tracks.

Source: Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License Manual PUB223(6-26), 9.6.12 Stop Before Railroad Crossings, printed 9-18 (physical PDF page 152) ↗

  18. What should a driver do when HazMat is leaking from the vehicle?

Correct answer: Stop safely, stay upwind, keep others away, and call for help

Do not continue driving just to find a phone or spread contamination. Protect yourself and others, provide shipping information to responders, and leave leak handling to properly trained and equipped personnel.

    Source: Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License Manual PUB223(6-26), 9.7.3 Fires — cargo leak response; also9.7.2 physical152, printed 9-19 (physical PDF page 153) ↗

  19. A HazMat trailer has hot doors and a suspected cargo fire. What should the driver do?

Correct answer: Keep the doors closed, move people away, and call for emergency help

Opening the doors can feed the fire and cause a flare-up. Do not approach or fight a hazardous cargo fire without the required training and equipment. Keep shipping information available for responders from a safe location.

Source: Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License Manual PUB223(6-26), 9.7.3 Fires, printed 9-19 (physical PDF page 153) ↗

  20. During transportation in commerce, a hazardous material directly causes an injury requiring admission to a hospital. How soon must the NRC be notified?

Correct answer: As soon as practical, but no later than 12 hours after the incident

The person in physical possession must give the required telephone notice as soon as practical, no later than 12 hours. The written incident report is a separate requirement.

    Source: 49 CFR 171.15(a), (b)(1)(ii), (c): Directly caused hospital-admission injury; NRC notice deadline ↗
