Review all 15 questions with answers
  1. A bus leans toward the outside of a banked curve. What does this indicate?

Correct answer: Its speed is too high for that curve

The manual treats outward lean on a banked curve as a sign of excessive speed. A curve speed suitable for a car may still cause a bus to slide or roll.

  2. Your bus is making a short trip between closely spaced city stops. How should you use the driver's safety belt?

Correct answer: Wear it while driving

The passenger chapter instructs the driver to use the safety belt while driving. Short distances and frequent stops do not change that instruction.

  3. A Pennsylvania passenger bus must stop for a railroad crossing. Where should the stop be made relative to the nearest rail?

Correct answer: Between 15 and 50 feet from the nearest rail

When this bus stop is required, stop 15–50 feet before the nearest rail, then look and listen and proceed only when safe. The question assumes no applicable exception; it does not treat every crossing or a green light as automatically exempt.

  4. A bus approaches a drawbridge with no traffic-control attendant or signal light. What should the driver do?

Correct answer: Stop 50 feet before the draw and confirm it is fully closed

PUB223 directs a stop 50 feet before the draw when there is no signal light or traffic-control attendant. With a green signal or an attendant controlling openings, its alternative is to slow and ensure safe passage.

  5. A transit bus's brake-door interlock holds the brakes while its rear door is open. May you rely on it instead of the parking brake?

Correct answer: No; the interlock is not a substitute for the parking brake

The interlock applies the brakes and holds the engine at idle with the rear door open. It does not replace the parking brake.

  6. At the end of a bus shift, why should you recheck the passenger compartment's safety equipment?

Correct answer: It may have been damaged during passenger service

Riders may damage safety-related equipment during a trip. An end-of-shift inspection finds problems that need reporting and correction before the bus returns to service.

  7. For an interstate bus operation subject to 49 CFR 396.11, does that federal rule require a written report when no defect was discovered or reported?

Correct answer: No; the federal rule does not require a no-defect report

The current federal rule does not require a no-defect report. Applicable defect reports and safe-operation checks remain required. Separate state or employer requirements may be stricter, and section 396.11 also exempts certain operations.

  8. A passenger bus needs fuel while parked inside a closed building. May it be refueled with riders aboard?

Correct answer: No; the riders must not remain aboard for refueling there

Do not refuel a bus inside a closed building with passengers aboard. The manual also says to avoid refueling with passengers aboard generally unless absolutely necessary. Separate school-bus rules can be stricter.

  9. Passengers cannot safely leave a disabled bus at its present location. If it must be towed with them aboard, how far may that emergency move continue?

Correct answer: Only to the nearest safe place to unload them

The manual permits the exceptional occupied tow only when getting off is unsafe. It limits the move to the nearest safe discharge point, not continued passenger service.

  10. At an intermediate stop with several similar coaches, what information should you announce to help riders return to the correct bus?

Correct answer: The location, reason for the stop, next departure time and bus number

The passenger chapter directs the driver to announce those details at a destination or intermediate stop. Riders need to know where they are, what the stop is for, when to return and which bus to board.

Source: Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License Manual PUB 223 (6-26), 4.2.5 At Your Destination, printed 4-3 (physical PDF page 91) ↗

  11. The coach aisle is lower than the seats. What reminder helps riders safely leave at the next stop?

Correct answer: Warn them about the step down before the bus fully stops

The manual directs an advance step-down reminder, as well as a reminder to take carry-ons.

Source: Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License Manual PUB223(6-26), 4.2.5 At Your Destination, printed4-3 (physical PDF page91) ↗

  12. Why does the handbook advise charter drivers to delay passenger boarding until departure time?

Correct answer: To reduce theft or vandalism while the bus is waiting

This is a charter-bus security practice, not a rule requiring passengers to stand while the bus moves.

Source: Pennsylvania Commercial Driver's License Manual PUB223(6-26), 4.2.5 At Your Destination, printed4-3 (physical PDF page91) ↗

  13. An emergency exit window will not close properly before service. May the driver treat it like a roof hatch designed for ventilation?

Correct answer: No; do not drive with the emergency exit window open

The limited roof-hatch ventilation discussion does not authorize driving with an open emergency exit window or door.

  14. Under 49 CFR 392.10, does every green highway signal at a railroad crossing automatically remove a passenger bus's required stop?

Correct answer: No; proper signal operation and permission under local law are both required

The federal exception requires a functioning green highway signal and local law permitting movement across the tracks without slowing or stopping. Do not assume a green light alone authorizes a bus to omit a required stop.

Source: 49 CFR392.10(b)(3), functioning highway traffic signal and local-law condition; current through2026-09-10 ↗

  15. Under 49 CFR 177.870(c), which material is the stated exception to the ban on Class 1 explosives in the passenger-carrying space of a for-hire vehicle?

Correct answer: Small-arms ammunition, subject to the other applicable transport requirements

The passenger-space rule names small-arms ammunition as its exception. This does not authorize other explosives in that space or waive applicable packaging and other transport rules. Do not rely on the manual's obsolete ORM-D wording.
