  1. What makes up total stopping distance after a driver notices a hazard?

Correct answer: The distance traveled while reacting plus the distance needed to brake.

You travel before the brakes begin slowing the car as well as during braking. Speed, road surface, tires and attention affect the space needed.

  2. On a multilane road, you have been traveling directly beside another car for a long time. Why is it useful to adjust your position when safe?

Correct answer: It creates side space for a sudden movement or escape.

Space is needed beside the car as well as ahead. Avoiding prolonged side-by-side travel leaves more room to react if the neighboring driver moves unexpectedly.
