  1. On a dry road, which statement about the center of a lane is most accurate for a rider?

Correct answer: It can be usable, but avoid actual oil or grease buildups.

Evaluate the actual surface. The manual does not prohibit every use of the center portion, but warns about substantial oil or grease, especially where vehicles stop often.

  2. You are checking your following gap using a fixed roadside marker. When should you begin counting?

Correct answer: When the rear of the vehicle ahead passes the marker.

Time the interval from the leading vehicle passing a fixed point until you reach it. Increase the space for limited visibility, traffic conflicts or reduced traction; no single interval fits every situation.

  3. A large truck is passing you on the left. Which position generally gives useful space within your lane?

Correct answer: The center portion, with room to manage wind and clearance.

The center portion gives margin from the passing vehicle and from the lane edge. Account for projecting mirrors, wind and the possibility of a small steering error.

  4. You would reach a parked-car door area at the same time an oncoming truck passes. What is a useful strategy?

Correct answer: Adjust speed to deal with the hazards at different times.

When possible, separate hazards rather than manage several tight clearances together. A controlled speed adjustment can let the oncoming vehicle pass before you reach the other hazard.

  5. Near a busy shopping-area exit, how can a rider prepare to react sooner?

Correct answer: Cover the clutch and both brakes while scanning for hazards.

Having the controls ready can reduce the time needed to respond. It complements searching and a safe speed; it does not replace either.
