Left Turn Only sign
What does it mean?
A left arrow with ONLY identifies a lane reserved for the left-turn movement at the intersection. It does not give turning traffic priority over a signal, pedestrians or conflicting traffic; any U-turn question also depends on applicable law and other signs.
What to do when you see it
- Use the lane when your route requires the indicated turn.
- Obey the signal and yield requirements before turning.
- If you cannot safely leave an unwanted turn lane where allowed, follow its required movement and reroute.
How to recognize it
- Black arrow curving left.
- ONLY printed below the arrow.
- White upright rectangle with black border.
On the road
You realize late that you are in a left-turn-only lane but wanted to go straight. If a safe permitted lane change is no longer possible, follow the left turn and adjust your route afterward.
Don’t confuse it with

No Left Turn sign
A red slash forbids the left turn; ONLY makes it the lane's required movement.

Straight or Left Turn sign
The branched-arrow sign permits a through movement as well as a left turn.
