Pedestrian crossing warning
What does it mean?
People may enter, cross, or share the roadway in the area. Read any accompanying plaque: AHEAD gives advance notice, while a downward arrow identifies a crossing location.
What to do when you see it
- Scan both sides of the road and the crossing area.
- Reduce speed and be prepared to yield or stop as required.
- Do not pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk.
How to recognize it
- Diamond-shaped sign with a walking-person silhouette.
- Usually yellow or fluorescent yellow-green; plaques may add distance or location.
On the road
A delivery van has stopped beside a marked crossing after this warning. You slow and wait because a pedestrian may be hidden in front of the van.
Don’t confuse it with

School area
The school warning is five-sided and depicts two people; this pedestrian warning is a diamond with one walking person.

School Crossing Sign
The school crossing assembly uses the school symbol and a downward arrow at the school crossing.
