School area
What does it mean?
You are approaching a school area or entering a designated school zone. The five-sided symbol alone does not state a numerical speed limit; separate signs and applicable local rules provide that information.
What to do when you see it
- Watch for children near the roadway, parked vehicles, and crossings.
- Observe school speed-limit signs and any times or flashing-light conditions.
- Be ready to stop for a crossing guard or children crossing.
How to recognize it
- Five-sided sign with a pointed top.
- Two walking figures on a fluorescent yellow-green background.
On the road
You pass this sign beside a school but do not see a speed number on it. You scan for children and read the separate speed-limit sign and its posted conditions.
Don’t confuse it with

School Crossing Sign
A downward arrow added to the school sign points out the crossing location.

Pedestrian crossing warning
The ordinary pedestrian warning is diamond-shaped and uses one walking figure.
Put the meaning into practice
The related quiz includes this sign and other study questions. State practice can also cover local rules; it is not an official DMV exam.
