  1. A West Virginia driver with an ordinary Class E license wants full two-wheel motorcycle driving privileges rather than learner-only privileges. What additional credential is needed?

Correct answer: A motorcycle F endorsement obtained through the applicable motorcycle qualification process.

West Virginia requires motorcycle qualification in addition to an ordinary driver license. A licensed driver adds an F endorsement; someone seeking only motorcycle privileges may obtain a Class F motorcycle-only license.

Source: WV DMV, Motorcycle - opening paragraph on F endorsement and Class F motorcycle-only license; also current Code 17B-2-7b, separate motorcycle examination. Current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  2. A West Virginia resident holds a Class F motorcycle-only license and no other driver license. May that person use it to drive a passenger car?

Correct answer: No. Class F motorcycle-only privileges do not authorize driving a passenger car.

The motorcycle-only Class F license authorizes motorcycle operation, not another type of motor vehicle. An ordinary car requires the appropriate separate driving privileges.

Source: West Virginia Driver Licensing Handbook, Revised 07/2026, Motorcycle-Only License; printed 14, physical PDF page 24. Current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  3. A 15-year-old wants a West Virginia motorcycle instruction permit. What minimum age applies even if the applicant is otherwise prepared for the motorcycle knowledge examination?

Correct answer: At least 16 years old.

Code 17B-2-5(b) sets the motorcycle instruction-permit minimum at 16. Applicants under 18 also have a separate prerequisite involving the Level 2 intermediate or Class E requirements.

Source: Current WV Code 17B-2-5(b), motorcycle instruction-permit minimum age. Current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  4. Before a 16-year-old can obtain a West Virginia motorcycle instruction permit, which additional licensing prerequisite applies?

Correct answer: First complete the requirements for a Level 2 intermediate driver license or a Class E driver license.

The statute requires an applicant younger than 18 to have completed the requirements for Level 2 or Class E before receiving the motorcycle permit. It does not add a separate one-year Level 2 holding period to that sentence.

Source: Current WV Code 17B-2-5(b), under-18 prerequisite; corroborated by July 2026 Driver Licensing Handbook, printed 14 / physical 24. Current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  5. A West Virginia motorcycle instruction-permit holder plans to ride home after sunset using a bright working headlamp. Is that allowed under the permit?

Correct answer: No. Motorcycle permit operation is limited to sunrise through sunset.

The motorcycle instruction permit authorizes operation only between sunrise and sunset. Equipment compliance or another rider nearby does not remove that restriction.

Source: Current WV Code 17B-2-5(b), sunrise-to-sunset operating condition. Current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  6. A West Virginia motorcycle permit holder wants an experienced, endorsed adult to ride as a passenger. Does the adult’s experience make this permitted?

Correct answer: No. The motorcycle instruction permit prohibits carrying any passenger.

West Virginia’s motorcycle instruction permit has a no-passenger condition. A passenger’s age, experience or license does not create an exception.

Source: Current WV Code 17B-2-5(b), prohibition on transporting any passenger; WV DMV Motorcycle permit conditions. Current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  7. A West Virginia motorcycle instruction permit expires before the holder finishes qualifying. What does current DMV guidance require to obtain another permit?

Correct answer: Retake the examination and apply for a new permit; the expired permit is not renewable.

The DMV says an expired motorcycle permit is not renewed: the applicant must retake the examination to obtain a new one. Code 17B-2-5(b) permits a qualified new application rather than renewal of the old permit.

Source: WV DMV, Motorcycle - instruction-permit expiration/nonrenewal paragraph; current Code 17B-2-5(b), qualified new application. Current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  8. A new West Virginia motorcycle permit holder feels ready for the DMV on-cycle skills test the next day. What minimum permit-holding period does current DMV guidance require?

Correct answer: At least seven days.

Current DMV guidance requires holding the motorcycle permit for seven days before the on-cycle skills test. Feeling prepared sooner does not remove that minimum.

Source: WV DMV, Motorcycle - seven-day permit requirement before on-cycle skills-test appointment; July 2026 Driver Licensing Handbook, printed 14 / physical 24. Current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  9. An applicant completes a West Virginia-approved motorcycle safety course. Which examination relief does current DMV guidance describe?

Correct answer: A waiver of the DMV on-cycle skills test, with the other licensing requirements still applicable.

The DMV accepts successful approved-course completion for the on-cycle skills waiver. Applicants still need the applicable permit and licensing process; the course card is not itself a motorcycle license.

Source: WV DMV, Motorcycle - approved Motorcycle Safety Course and Basic Rider Course skills-test waiver; current Code 17B-1D-6 authorizes examination exemption. Current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  10. A first-time West Virginia applicant wants to register for the DMV-described Basic Rider Course before obtaining a motorcycle permit. What does the current agency page direct?

Correct answer: Obtain the motorcycle permit before registering for the course.

The current DMV page expressly requires a motorcycle permit before course registration. Course enrollment or use of a training motorcycle does not replace that prerequisite.

Source: WV DMV, Motorcycle - paragraph stating motorcycle permit required before registering for a motorcycle safety course. Current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  11. A West Virginia applicant passes the skills test on a three-wheel motorcycle. What should the applicant understand before riding an ordinary two-wheel motorcycle?

Correct answer: Testing on three wheels restricts the resulting motorcycle privilege to three-wheel operation.

Current DMV guidance distinguishes the test vehicle: a three-wheel test results in a three-wheel restriction. It does not establish the balance and control qualification for an ordinary two-wheel motorcycle.

Source: WV DMV, Motorcycle - final paragraph on two-wheel versus three-wheel skills tests and resulting restrictions. Current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  12. A 30-year-old operator and adult passenger are taking an ordinary two-wheel motorcycle onto a West Virginia road. Which helmet rule applies?

Correct answer: Both must wear qualifying protective helmets securely fastened by neck or chin straps.

The ordinary motorcycle rule applies to operators and passengers without an adult age exemption. The helmet must meet one of the statutory standards and be securely fastened; carrying it is not compliance.

Source: Current WV Code 17C-15-44(a), full official Chapter 17C text: operator/passenger helmet and securely fastened neck or chin strap; standards ANSI Z90.1, DOT FMVSS 218, or Snell. Current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗
