Review all 20 questions with answers
  1. You approach occupied cars parked at the right curb. How should you plan your motorcycle's space?

Correct answer: Allow room for doors or a pullout while also accounting for oncoming traffic.

Doors, pedestrians and cars pulling from the curb can enter your path. Select speed and a lane position that leave room, without creating a conflict with oncoming vehicles.

  2. You will slow for a driveway where following traffic may not expect it. If time and conditions permit, what helps communicate that slowdown?

Correct answer: Flash the brake light before the main reduction in speed.

An early brake-light warning can help others notice an unexpected slowdown. It supplements signaling, observation and a controlled reduction in speed; it is not abrupt brake-checking.

  3. On a straight, suitable road, you are the third rider in a staggered group, using the leader's left-side track. What interval from that leader does the West Virginia motorcycle handbook describe?

Correct answer: At least two seconds, increasing the space when conditions require.

The West Virginia motorcycle handbook places the second rider one second behind in the other track and the third two seconds behind the leader in the same track. Increase spacing when conditions require; staggering does not remove following distance.

  4. An experienced leader is organizing a group that includes new riders. Where does the West Virginia motorcycle handbook recommend placing those beginners?

Correct answer: Just behind the leader, where their pace and needs can be considered.

Placing beginners just behind the leader helps the group set a pace they can manage. Do not place them where they feel compelled to exceed their skill to catch up.

  5. A friend has been drinking and wants to ride home, saying a short trip will be harmless. What is the best response?

Correct answer: Help arrange a safe ride home that does not require the friend to operate the motorcycle.

Help prevent an impaired person from riding. Arrange another way home and enlist others' help if needed; a shorter route or feeling more awake does not remove impairment.

  6. A full tank bag restricts movement of the handlebars. The total load is below the motorcycle's weight rating. Is that enough to make the load acceptable?

Correct answer: No; repack or reposition it so the handlebars and controls remain unobstructed.

A load can be within the weight limit and still interfere with safe operation. A tank bag must not obstruct the handlebars or controls.

  7. A beginner can barely touch the ground on a motorcycle and struggles to reach its controls. What should guide the choice of a training motorcycle?

Correct answer: Choose one that fits the rider and allows easy control operation.

The handbook says the motorcycle should fit, with the rider's feet reaching the ground while seated. Familiar, accessible controls and a suitable fit make basic control easier.

  8. You borrow a motorcycle with linked brakes after learning on separate brake systems. What should you do before assuming how its controls act?

Correct answer: Read its owner's manual and learn the system's operation before entering traffic.

Integrated systems can apply front and rear brakes together from a control. Consult the owner's manual for that motorcycle's actual system instead of assuming all controls work alike.

  9. On a clear day, a rider thinks the headlight is unnecessary because the road is easy to see. What safety purpose does the manual give for keeping it on?

Correct answer: It helps other road users notice the motorcycle.

The daytime benefit is conspicuity: helping others detect the smaller motorcycle. This is riding advice, not a claim that a headlight guarantees recognition or right-of-way.

  10. A motorcycle's drive chain breaks, leaving no drive to the rear wheel, but the wheel is still rolling. What should the rider do?

Correct answer: Close the throttle and bring the motorcycle to a controlled stop in a safe place.

A broken chain can suddenly remove drive and can also create a skid hazard. When the wheel remains rolling, close the throttle and brake to a safe stop instead of trying to continue.

  11. Rain grooves cause a mild wandering sensation, but no mechanical fault is evident. What response is generally appropriate?

Correct answer: Stay relaxed, keep a steady speed and ride straight.

A mild weave on grooves or grating is generally not itself dangerous. Fighting it with abrupt changes can create a greater hazard. This is distinct from a mechanical wobble requiring a safe stop.

  12. Your motorcycle has functioning ABS. During a firm straight-line emergency stop, how should you use the brake controls?

Correct answer: Maintain brake pressure and let ABS regulate wheel lock.

ABS controls pressure to help prevent wheel lock while the brake controls remain applied. Follow the motorcycle manufacturer's instructions; do not confuse this with releasing a locked front wheel on a non-ABS motorcycle.

Source: West Virginia DMV currently linked Motorcycle Operator Manual, WV-edited MSF eighteenth revision March 2023, Anti-Lock Braking Systems (ABS); printed 12, physical PDF page 13. Matched September 29, 2026. ↗

  13. On a non-ABS motorcycle, a locked rear tire has moved sideways out of line with the front. Why is suddenly releasing it especially dangerous?

Correct answer: Regaining grip while misaligned can cause a violent high-side crash.

A misaligned rear tire that suddenly regains traction can snap the motorcycle upright and throw the rider. This is why skid control requires practical training and why avoiding excessive rear-brake pressure matters.

Source: West Virginia DMV currently linked Motorcycle Operator Manual, WV-edited MSF eighteenth revision March 2023, Rear-Wheel Skids; printed 27, physical PDF page 28. Matched September 29, 2026. ↗

  14. Traffic is stopped in two adjacent lanes. Why does the West Virginia motorcycle handbook advise against riding between the rows of vehicles?

Correct answer: A door, sudden turn or small movement can close the narrow escape space.

Drivers can open doors or move unexpectedly. The manual warns that threading between stopped or moving vehicles leaves little protection from those hazards. This question tests the safety advice, not a separately verified lane-filtering exception or offense.

  15. A West Virginia driver with an ordinary Class E license wants full two-wheel motorcycle driving privileges rather than learner-only privileges. What additional credential is needed?

Correct answer: A motorcycle F endorsement obtained through the applicable motorcycle qualification process.

West Virginia requires motorcycle qualification in addition to an ordinary driver license. A licensed driver adds an F endorsement; someone seeking only motorcycle privileges may obtain a Class F motorcycle-only license.

  16. A West Virginia resident holds a Class F motorcycle-only license and no other driver license. May that person use it to drive a passenger car?

Correct answer: No. Class F motorcycle-only privileges do not authorize driving a passenger car.

The motorcycle-only Class F license authorizes motorcycle operation, not another type of motor vehicle. An ordinary car requires the appropriate separate driving privileges.

Source: West Virginia Driver Licensing Handbook, Revised 07/2026, Motorcycle-Only License; printed 14, physical PDF page 24. Current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  17. A 15-year-old wants a West Virginia motorcycle instruction permit. What minimum age applies even if the applicant is otherwise prepared for the motorcycle knowledge examination?

Correct answer: At least 16 years old.

Code 17B-2-5(b) sets the motorcycle instruction-permit minimum at 16. Applicants under 18 also have a separate prerequisite involving the Level 2 intermediate or Class E requirements.

Source: Current WV Code 17B-2-5(b), motorcycle instruction-permit minimum age. Current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  18. Before a 16-year-old can obtain a West Virginia motorcycle instruction permit, which additional licensing prerequisite applies?

Correct answer: First complete the requirements for a Level 2 intermediate driver license or a Class E driver license.

The statute requires an applicant younger than 18 to have completed the requirements for Level 2 or Class E before receiving the motorcycle permit. It does not add a separate one-year Level 2 holding period to that sentence.

Source: Current WV Code 17B-2-5(b), under-18 prerequisite; corroborated by July 2026 Driver Licensing Handbook, printed 14 / physical 24. Current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  19. A West Virginia motorcycle instruction-permit holder plans to ride home after sunset using a bright working headlamp. Is that allowed under the permit?

Correct answer: No. Motorcycle permit operation is limited to sunrise through sunset.

The motorcycle instruction permit authorizes operation only between sunrise and sunset. Equipment compliance or another rider nearby does not remove that restriction.

Source: Current WV Code 17B-2-5(b), sunrise-to-sunset operating condition. Current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  20. A West Virginia motorcycle permit holder wants an experienced, endorsed adult to ride as a passenger. Does the adult’s experience make this permitted?

Correct answer: No. The motorcycle instruction permit prohibits carrying any passenger.

West Virginia’s motorcycle instruction permit has a no-passenger condition. A passenger’s age, experience or license does not create an exception.

Source: Current WV Code 17B-2-5(b), prohibition on transporting any passenger; WV DMV Motorcycle permit conditions. Current source reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗
