  3. An applicant points to a steering component and says its name. What else does the modernized inspection require?

Correct answer: Explain the condition or defects being checked on that item.

Credit requires identifying the item and explaining what you are inspecting it for. Simply naming a component does not demonstrate knowledge of its safe condition.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Explaining inspected conditions; printed and physical PDF page 201; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  4. During the Section 11M test, must you crawl underneath the truck to earn inspection credit?

  6. The modernized inspection evaluates one axle. How should you prepare?

Correct answer: Learn the required inspection for every axle on the vehicle.

Although the test requires one axle inspection, Section 11M says to be prepared to perform the same inspection on all axles. The selected test portion is not a reason to ignore other equipment.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Preparing all axle locations; printed and physical PDF page 201; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  7. How should you explain checking the critical fluids in the modernized engine-area inspection?

Correct answer: With the engine off, identify the level points and add/full marks.

Identify the applicable dipsticks or sight glasses and explain checking between the add and full marks with the engine off. Include the fluids appropriate to the vehicle, such as hydraulic brake fluid when equipped.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Engine-off fluid demonstration; printed and physical PDF page 209; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  8. The engine is hot when you reach the cooling-system inspection. What should you avoid?

Correct answer: Removing the radiator cap while the engine is hot.

Opening a hot radiator cap can release hot pressurized coolant. The handbook specifically warns against removing it while the engine is hot; use the vehicle's safe inspection method.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Hot cooling-system precaution; printed and physical PDF page 209; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  9. How do you show that the dashboard turn-signal indicators work during the modernized inspection?

Correct answer: Operate each signal and observe its corresponding indicator.

The indicators must operate when the corresponding controls are used. Knowing where an indicator is located does not demonstrate that it functions.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Demonstrating dashboard indicators; printed and physical PDF page 202; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  10. An examiner helps check lights while you operate the controls. What remains your responsibility?

Correct answer: Specify each light and where the examiner should observe it.

You must direct the helper to the relevant locations and identify exactly which lights to check as you activate them. Dashboard indicators do not replace observing the exterior lamps.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Directing an external light helper; printed and physical PDF page 208; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  11. The wiper blades look intact. What demonstration is still needed in the modernized inspection?

Correct answer: Operate the wipers and activate the windshield washers.

Check that the arms and blades are secure and undamaged, then demonstrate smooth wiper operation and functioning washers. Appearance alone does not prove either system works.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Wiper and washer operation; printed and physical PDF page 203; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  12. What shows the examiner that the heater and defroster function?

Correct answer: Operate their controls and demonstrate the systems working.

Section 11M calls for identifying, describing and demonstrating the heater and defroster. A clear windshield at one moment is not proof that the equipment operates.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Demonstrating windshield defrost; printed and physical PDF page 203; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  13. A side-view camera lens is clean, but its display cannot be viewed properly from the driver's seat. Is the check complete?

Correct answer: No; the display must work and be adjusted for viewing.

For an equipped vehicle, check both the camera and the inside display. The image must be operable and viewable from the driving position, just as mirrors need proper adjustment.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Camera display visibility; printed and physical PDF page 203; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  14. A fire extinguisher has a satisfactory charge but is lying loose on the cab floor. What does the inspection require?

Correct answer: It must be properly charged and secured in the vehicle.

The inspection checks both charge and secure mounting. An extinguisher being present is not enough if it is unsecured or unusable.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Extinguisher condition and restraint; printed and physical PDF page 202; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  15. The vehicle uses circuit breakers rather than replaceable electrical fuses. How should you address the fuse check?

Correct answer: Explain that arrangement and identify the circuit breakers.

The handbook permits identifying the vehicle's circuit breakers when it is not equipped with electrical fuses. Explain the actual equipment rather than reciting an inapplicable fuse procedure.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Circuit-breaker explanation; printed and physical PDF page 202; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  16. Why are tractor and trailer parking brakes checked separately, when applicable?

Correct answer: To show that each parking-brake system can hold the combination.

The handbook describes gentle holding checks with the other parking-brake system released as applicable. Testing with both engaged could conceal that one system does not hold; use the vehicle's safe procedure.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Separate parking-brake demonstration; printed and physical PDF page 203; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  17. During the low-speed service-brake check, the truck stops but pulls sharply left. What does that indicate?

Correct answer: A possible brake problem that needs attention.

The check assesses both stopping action and whether the vehicle pulls to either side. A pull or poor stopping performance can indicate a braking problem and should not be treated as a pass.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Service-brake directional check; printed and physical PDF page 204; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  18. Your test vehicle's air safety devices differ from those on the truck you first trained in. What should guide your demonstration?

Correct answer: The test vehicle's manufacturer-specified procedures and equipment.

Air safety devices vary. Section 11M requires knowing and explaining the specifications for the vehicle being tested; a generic script is not a substitute for understanding its actual system.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Vehicle-specific air-system demonstration; printed and physical PDF page 204; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  19. What must you identify while demonstrating the air-gauge and governor cutoff check?

Correct answer: The cutoff pressure reached by the actual test vehicle.

Demonstrate that the air gauge works and pressure builds to governor cutoff, then identify that vehicle's cutoff pressure. The end of the gauge scale is not the governor setting.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Governor cutoff observation; printed and physical PDF page 204; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  20. With the engine stopped, what electrical condition is needed for the low-air warning demonstration?

Correct answer: Keep the key or electrical power in the on position.

The warning check is performed without restarting the engine, with electrical power on so the warning devices can operate. Know the applicable system's specifications; this question does not prescribe one warning-pressure value for every vehicle.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Power for low-air warning check; printed and physical PDF page 204; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  21. In the applied air-leakage test described in Section 11M, when do you begin the one-minute observation?

Correct answer: After full foot-brake application and stabilization of the gauge.

After setting up and securing the vehicle as required, fully apply the foot brake and let the gauge stabilize before measuring the one-minute loss. The initial application drop is not the timed leakage measurement.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Timing the applied leakage check; printed and physical PDF page 204; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  22. One hydraulic-brake test vehicle requires the engine running; another has different power-assist instructions. Which approach is appropriate?

Correct answer: Demonstrate the manufacturer's procedure for the actual system.

Hydraulic systems and power-assist checks vary. Section 11M calls for the vehicle-specific procedure, including the specified ignition or engine condition, rather than a universal engine-on or engine-off rule.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Hydraulic test system differences; printed and physical PDF page 205; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  23. A bus entrance closes securely, but a step tread is loose. Is the entrance inspection satisfactory?

Correct answer: No; the steps and secure walking surfaces also need inspection.

The entrance check includes the door, handrails, step lights when equipped, clear steps and secure tread. A working door does not make a loose walking surface acceptable.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Passenger entrance condition; printed and physical PDF page 206; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  24. What travel condition should you demonstrate for an equipped passenger lift?

Correct answer: Fully retracted and securely latched, with damage and leaks checked.

The lift must be fully retracted and latched for travel. The inspection also addresses damage, missing parts, leaks and how correct operation is checked.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Passenger lift travel position; printed and physical PDF page 206; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  25. For the modernized bus inspection, how should you address emergency exits?

Correct answer: Demonstrate at least one and explain the others, including warnings.

Section 11M requires an exit-operation demonstration, identifying how the other exits work, secure closure and working warnings. Electrical warning devices are checked with the key in the on or charged position.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Emergency exit demonstration; printed and physical PDF page 206; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  26. An equipped school bus's crossing safety arm stays partly folded when the stop arm extends. What should the inspection show instead?

Correct answer: It extends fully and works with the stop-arm system.

Mounting condition is one part of the check. The safety arm must also function properly with the stop arm and extend fully, with no loose, broken or damaged parts.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; School safety-arm coordination; printed and physical PDF page 207; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  27. Why inspect the seals on the school bus's first-aid and body-fluid cleanup kits?

Correct answer: A broken seal can indicate that contents are missing.

The handbook calls for both kits to be present and their seals intact. A broken seal can signal missing supplies and needs attention; merely seeing a kit container does not establish its readiness.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; School emergency-kit seals; printed and physical PDF page 207; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  28. Rust trails or shiny areas appear around wheel fasteners. What are you looking for?

Correct answer: Possible loose fasteners, missing nuts or damaged stud holes.

The wheel inspection looks for signs of loose or damaged fastening, including rust trails and shiny surfaces. Explain the warning signs instead of treating the presence of nuts as proof of security.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Wheel fastening warning signs; printed and physical PDF page 210; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  29. For a tire without an applicable automatic checking system, what demonstrates an actual inflation check?

Correct answer: Use a tire-pressure gauge rather than judging by a kick.

A tire gauge measures air pressure; kicking or looking at the tire does not. If special monitoring equipment is fitted, understand its actual function rather than assuming every monitoring system also adjusts pressure.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Measuring tire inflation; printed and physical PDF page 210; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  30. The steering linkage is not visibly bent. What else belongs in its inspection?

Correct answer: Secure connections and required nuts, bolts and cotter pins.

Check the linkage for wear and damage as well as secure mounting and retained connections. An unbent part can still be unsafe if a connection is loose or a required retaining pin is missing.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Steering linkage fasteners; printed and physical PDF page 209; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  31. Why inspect spring hangers and mounting hardware as well as the springs?

Correct answer: A sound spring still needs secure, undamaged attachment points.

Suspension inspection includes the springs and their mounting components. Missing or damaged attachments can be a defect even when the visible spring itself is intact.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Spring attachment inspection; printed and physical PDF page 210; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  32. A brake hose is present but rubbed deeply at a nearby bracket. What should the inspection address?

Correct answer: Its damage, connections and possible leakage.

Brake hoses and lines must be checked for damage and leaks, with secure fittings. Simply finding a hose in place does not establish that its condition is safe.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Brake hose integrity; printed and physical PDF page 211; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  33. Oil is visible on an accessible brake friction surface. Why is that a defect to report?

Correct answer: It can reduce braking friction and create a fire hazard.

Grease and oil on brake linings, pads, drums or discs can impair braking and create a fire risk. Do not confuse lubricated mechanical components with friction surfaces that must not be contaminated.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Brake friction contamination; printed and physical PDF page 211; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  34. The bus battery is not visible or accessible during the inspection. How should you handle that item?

Correct answer: Tell the examiner it is inaccessible and explain the applicable check.

Section 11M instructs you to inform the examiner when batteries are not visible or accessible. Inspect accessible wiring and enclosures safely; do not improvise disassembly of unfamiliar equipment.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Inaccessible battery explanation; printed and physical PDF page 212; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  35. You check the tractor's air and electrical connections. What other location must be included?

Correct answer: The corresponding connections at the trailer end.

Both power-unit and trailer connections must be inspected. Check seating, sealing, security and damage, along with safe routing that avoids tangling, pinching and dragging.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Both ends of trailer connections; printed and physical PDF page 213; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  36. The fifth-wheel release handle appears engaged. What additional inspection is needed?

Correct answer: Confirm the locking jaws or lever are secured around the kingpin.

Inspect the actual locking engagement around the kingpin, not just the handle position. Also inspect the release mechanism and applicable safety latch or lock.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Fifth-wheel locking engagement; printed and physical PDF page 215; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  37. What should you see where the trailer apron rests on the fifth-wheel skid plate?

Correct answer: The trailer lying flat with no gap between the mating plates.

Section 11M calls for the apron to lie flat on the fifth wheel without a gap. Inspect the kingpin and apron for damage as well; an apparently closed handle does not prove correct seating.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Apron seating and gap; printed and physical PDF page 214; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  38. The sliding fifth-wheel release is in its travel position. What confirms the slider is secured?

Correct answer: Undamaged locking pins that are fully engaged.

Inspect the actual locking pins, their condition and full engagement. The slider's location or release-handle appearance alone does not establish that it is locked.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Sliding fifth-wheel pins; printed and physical PDF page 215; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  39. Your test combination uses a ball-type coupler rather than a fifth wheel. What should you explain?

Correct answer: How that coupler works and the condition of its actual locking parts.

Coupling systems vary. Inspect the system actually installed, including secure mounting, coupler and tongue condition, and the applicable locking and safety devices.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Matching the actual coupling type; printed and physical PDF page 215; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  40. On a non-fifth-wheel combination equipped with safety chains and a breakaway cable, what should you check?

Correct answer: Secure crossed chains without excessive slack, and an engaged breakaway cable.

For the equipped non-fifth-wheel systems described, the handbook checks chains or cables for security, crossing, kinks and excessive slack, and calls for the breakaway cable to be engaged. This is not a claim that every trailer type uses the same devices.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Coupling safety devices; printed and physical PDF page 216; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  41. Which landing-gear condition is appropriate before the combination moves?

Correct answer: Fully raised, crank secured, with clearance for tractor turns.

Check that the gear is fully raised, supports and pads are sound, and the crank is secured. A tractor-semitrailer must also have clearance between the tractor frame and landing gear when turning.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Landing gear travel clearance; printed and physical PDF page 216; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  42. At the rear of a combination's trailer, what should you inspect besides lamp operation?

Correct answer: Properly colored, clean and undamaged lenses and reflectors.

The rear check includes the condition and correct color of lenses and reflectors. Working bulbs do not compensate for missing, damaged or obscured reflective surfaces.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Rear reflector condition; printed and physical PDF page 213; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  43. You find a break in the cargo floor while checking the trailer structure. Why is it relevant?

Correct answer: A damaged floor can permit loss of cargo.

The frame inspection includes cracks, breaks and holes in the cargo area or floor. Securement equipment is not a substitute for sound supporting structure.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Cargo floor structural damage; printed and physical PDF page 212; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  44. After a trailer's tandem assembly has been positioned, what does the inspection need to confirm?

Correct answer: The tandem release lever and locking pins are secure.

The handbook specifically includes the trailer tandem release lever and pins. Their security is a separate check from the axle's chosen position.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Trailer tandem locking check; printed and physical PDF page 212; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  45. What is the modernized inspection looking for at fuel tanks and an equipped DEF tank?

Correct answer: Secure mounting, tight caps and no tank or line leaks.

Inspect the tanks, caps, mounts and connected lines. DEF is diesel exhaust fluid, not diesel fuel; the similar inspection locations do not make their fluids interchangeable.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Tank caps and leak inspection; printed and physical PDF page 212; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  46. A coach's suspension components are not readily accessible, and the coach leans to one side. What should you explain?

Correct answer: The access limitation and that leaning may indicate a suspension problem.

Tell the examiner when suspension components are not visible or accessible and check whether the vehicle sits level front-to-rear and side-to-side. Leaning can be a sign of a suspension problem.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Suspension condition and vehicle level; printed and physical PDF page 211; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  47. During the exterior light check, the brake lamps illuminate but remain on after you release the service brake. Is that satisfactory?

Correct answer: No; they should illuminate on application and turn off on release.

The handbook requires checking both responses: brake lights on with brake application and off with release. A lamp that stays on cannot communicate braking changes correctly.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Brake lamp release operation; printed and physical PDF page 208; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  48. The bus's seat frames are firmly attached, but a cushion is loose. What does the inspection require?

Correct answer: Secure cushions as well as sound, firmly attached seat frames.

Passenger seating inspection includes broken frames, firm attachment to the floor and cushions secured to the frames. Checking just the floor mounts leaves part of the required inspection undone.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 11M; Seat cushion and frame security; printed and physical PDF page 206; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  49. Which sequence belongs to the modernized Section 12M basic-control test?

Correct answer: Forward stop, straight backing, forward offset, reverse offset.

Wisconsin Section 12M lists Forward Stop, Straight-Line Backing, Forward Offset Tracking and Reverse Offset Backing in that order. Read the instructions for each exercise and ask the examiner to clarify anything you do not understand before starting.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 12M; Modernized maneuver sequence; printed and physical PDF page 220; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  50. In a modernized backing exercise, you open the door for a better view while securely stopped but stay in the seat. Does it count as a look?

Correct answer: Yes; opening the door counts even without climbing out.

Opening the door or leaving the seated position counts as a look; walking to the back of a bus does too. Secure the vehicle before a permitted look and do not open the door while moving.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 12M; What counts as a look; printed and physical PDF page 221; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  51. How should you leave a truck cab for a permitted look during the modernized backing test?

Correct answer: Secure it, face the truck and maintain three points of contact.

Apply the parking brakes and select neutral before a permitted look. Truck entry and exit use three points of contact facing the vehicle; the handbook separately describes forward-facing bus exit with a firm handrail grip.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 12M; Safe truck versus bus exit; printed and physical PDF page 221; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  52. While maneuvering in the modernized basic-control test, the examiner raises a hand to stop you. What should you do?

Correct answer: Stop immediately and follow directions to return within the boundaries.

The handbook requires an immediate stop when the examiner signals. Follow the instructions for returning within the exercise boundaries; do not complete a movement against that signal.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 12M; Examiner stop signal; printed and physical PDF page 221; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  53. You stop during a modernized backing exercise, then continue backward without first moving forward. Is the stop itself a pull-up?

Correct answer: No; stopping without changing direction is not a pull-up.

A pull-up is forward movement during a backing exercise to improve position or clear an encroachment. A stop without a direction change is not itself a pull-up.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 12M; Stopping versus a pull-up; printed and physical PDF page 220; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  54. Which contact is counted as an encroachment under Section 12M's stated vehicle-part rule?

Correct answer: A low-mounted attachment crossing an exercise boundary.

Wisconsin excludes the vehicle mirrors and certain unique parts at door-mirror height or higher from this encroachment rule. A part below that height counts when it touches or crosses a boundary. Follow the examiner's instructions for the actual vehicle.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 12M; Modernized boundary exception; printed and physical PDF page 220; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  55. In the modernized forward-stop exercise, what should be positioned in the stop box?

Correct answer: The frontmost part identified by the examiner.

Judge the vehicle's frontmost reference point as explained by the examiner, with the stated high-part exceptions. Section 12M allows one stop for this exercise; front-wheel position alone is not the target.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 12M; Forward-stop reference point; printed and physical PDF page 222; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  56. After completing the modernized forward stop, how do you signal that you are ready to be scored?

Correct answer: Set the parking brake, select neutral or park and sound the horn.

After the controlled stop, Wisconsin instructs you to set the parking brake, select neutral or park and sound the horn. This tells the examiner the exercise is complete; do not make another movement to adjust your position.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 12M; Signaling exercise completion; printed and physical PDF page 222; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  57. How far do you back through the alley in modernized straight-line backing?

Correct answer: Until the front of the vehicle clears the last set of cones.

The end condition uses the front of the vehicle clearing the final cones at the far end of the alley. Watch the whole vehicle's position rather than stopping as soon as the rear gets through.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 12M; Straight-back completion reference; printed and physical PDF page 222; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  58. What allowance does Section 12M give for its straight-line backing exercise?

Correct answer: One free pull-up and one permitted exit to look.

The modernized straight-line exercise allows one free pull-up and one safe exit to check position. These are model-specific test allowances, not a general limit on safety checks during everyday backing.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 12M; Straight-back allowances; printed and physical PDF page 222; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  59. While steering left through the opening in modernized forward-offset tracking, which tire position matters?

Correct answer: The rightmost rear tire must pass between the cone and the line.

The exercise assesses rear-tire tracking clearance while the vehicle moves forward into the opposite lane. Watch the rightmost rear tire's path through the marked opening, not just the front axle.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 12M; Forward-offset tracking reference; printed and physical PDF page 222; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  60. What does Wisconsin allow while you are moving through the forward-offset tracking exercise?

Correct answer: No stopping, backing up or exiting during the maneuver.

Wisconsin Section 12M.2.3 expressly prohibits stopping, backing up or exiting during forward-offset tracking. Stopping ends the exercise. This is not a free-versus-penalized back-up allowance. Make the prescribed final stop parallel to the outer boundary, at or before the far-end cones.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 12M; Forward-offset correction limits; printed and physical PDF page 222; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  61. Where should you finish modernized forward-offset tracking?

Correct answer: Parallel to the outer boundary, at or before the far-end cones.

The handbook specifies a parallel finish at or before the cones at the far end. Then secure the vehicle, select neutral and sound the horn as instructed.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 12M; Forward-offset finishing position; printed and physical PDF page 222; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  62. At the end of modernized reverse-offset backing, what position is required?

Correct answer: Straight in the alley, with the rearmost point in its three-foot box.

Wisconsin Section 12M.2.4 requires the vehicle to finish straight within the alley, with its rearmost reference point in the three-foot box. The examiner identifies that point and the permitted high-part exceptions. Do not cross the outer boundary.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 12M; Reverse-offset rear stop box; printed and physical PDF page 223; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  63. What allowance is listed for modernized reverse-offset backing?

Correct answer: Two free pull-ups and at most two exits to look.

Section 12M permits two free pull-ups and a maximum of two safe exits to check position for reverse-offset backing. Its allowance differs from straight-line backing, so use the correct exercise instructions.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 12M; Reverse-offset allowances; printed and physical PDF page 223; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  64. After the vehicle inspection, what must be passed before proceeding to the road test described after Section 12M?

Correct answer: The basic-control skills test.

The handbook places the basic-control test before the road test. Completing these written practice questions does not pass any hands-on testing stage.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 12M; Skills stage progression; printed and physical PDF page 223; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  65. The road-test route lacks a situation the examiner needs to assess. What may the examiner ask you to do?

Correct answer: Explain what you would do in a simulated version of that situation.

Section 13 allows an examiner to assess an unavailable traffic situation through simulation and explanation. Follow the examiner's directions and continue to obey signs, signals and traffic laws.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 13; Simulated road-test situations; printed and physical PDF page 227; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  66. When directed to turn during the road test, which preparation is appropriate?

Correct answer: Check traffic, signal and safely position for the turn.

The handbook calls for traffic checks, signaling, safe lane position and smooth speed adjustment before turning. Prepare early enough to maintain control rather than making a rushed movement.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 13; Preparing a road-test turn; printed and physical PDF page 227; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  67. You must stop while waiting to make a turn in the road test. How should the front wheels be positioned?

Correct answer: Aimed straight ahead while waiting.

Section 13 specifies straight front wheels while stopped before the turn. Keep the vehicle from rolling and recheck traffic before starting the maneuver.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 13; Waiting with straight front wheels; printed and physical PDF page 227; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  68. During a turn, why keep checking the mirror on the inside of the turn?

Correct answer: To ensure the vehicle clears objects along its inside path.

The inside path of a long vehicle can approach curbs or objects. The handbook requires checking that the vehicle does not strike anything inside the turn while also monitoring surrounding traffic.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 13; Inside-turn mirror check; printed and physical PDF page 227; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  69. A stop is required at an intersection with a marked stop line. What should the road-test stop demonstrate?

Correct answer: A complete controlled stop behind the line, without rolling.

Section 13 evaluates a smooth complete stop at the required position, a safe gap behind vehicles ahead and no forward or backward roll. Vehicle size does not remove the need to respect the stop line.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 13; Intersection stopping position; printed and physical PDF page 228; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  70. The examiner requests a lane change on a multi-lane road. What should precede lateral movement?

Correct answer: Traffic checks and the proper signal, followed by a safe gap.

Make the necessary traffic checks, signal and change lanes smoothly when safe. An examiner's request does not make an unsafe lane change acceptable.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 13; Controlled lane-change sequence; printed and physical PDF page 228; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  71. What should an expressway entrance demonstrate during the road test?

Correct answer: Traffic checks, signaling and a smooth merge into the proper lane.

The road-test guidance emphasizes a checked, signaled and smooth merge. Once in the traffic stream, maintain suitable lane position, spacing and speed while continuing traffic checks.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 13; Expressway merging behavior; printed and physical PDF page 228; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  72. After traffic checks and signaling for an expressway exit, where does the handbook describe smooth deceleration?

Correct answer: In the exit lane, continuing within the ramp's lane markings.

Section 13 describes smooth deceleration in the exit lane and continued controlled slowing on the ramp. Stay within its markings and maintain adequate space around the vehicle.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 13; Exit-lane deceleration; printed and physical PDF page 228; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  73. For the road-test roadside stop, which final location is appropriate?

Correct answer: Parallel to the shoulder and safely clear of the traffic flow.

Check traffic and signal right before a controlled stop. The vehicle should finish parallel and out of traffic without blocking driveways, hydrants, intersections or signs.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 13; Roadside stop location; printed and physical PDF page 229; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  74. After the road-test roadside stop is safely completed, what sequence does the handbook describe?

Correct answer: Cancel the turn signal, use hazards, set the parking brake and select neutral or park.

Section 13 describes canceling the turn signal, activating four-way flashers, applying the parking brake and selecting neutral or park. Secure the vehicle rather than relying on holding the pedals.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 13; Securing the roadside stop; printed and physical PDF page 229; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  75. When instructed to resume from the roadside stop, what should you do before moving into traffic?

Correct answer: Check traffic and mirrors, switch off hazards and signal left.

Recheck traffic thoroughly, especially from the left, and use the left signal after turning off the hazards. When a safe gap permits, release the parking brake and pull forward before steering smoothly into the lane.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 13; Rejoining traffic from the stop; printed and physical PDF page 229; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  76. How should you prepare for a curve in the road test?

Correct answer: Reduce to a suitable speed before entering and keep the vehicle in its lane.

Section 13 calls for reducing speed before the curve so planned braking or shifting is not needed inside it. Continue traffic checks and lane control; respond safely if conditions change unexpectedly.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 13; Curve entry preparation; printed and physical PDF page 229; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  77. Once any part of your commercial vehicle is in a railroad crossing, what should you avoid?

Correct answer: Changing gears, stopping, passing or changing lanes in the crossing.

Prepare and select the appropriate gear before crossing. The handbook warns against stopping, shifting, passing or changing lanes while any part of the vehicle remains in the crossing; enter only when the whole vehicle can clear.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 13; Gear selection across rails; printed and physical PDF page 229; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  78. After passing an overpass or bridge, what might the examiner ask you to identify?

Correct answer: Its posted clearance or weight restriction.

The test may assess whether you noticed and understood a clearance, weight-limit or other traffic sign. Read applicable restrictions before reaching the structure, not just after the examiner asks.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 13; Reading route clearance signs; printed and physical PDF page 230; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  79. For a test vehicle with an unsynchronized manual transmission, what shifting technique does Section 13 require?

Correct answer: Double-clutch when shifting, without revving or lugging the engine.

The handbook's double-clutch requirement applies to an unsynchronized manual transmission. Do not turn it into a rule for automatic vehicles; avoid riding the clutch or coasting with it depressed.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 13; Unsynchronized manual shifting; printed and physical PDF page 230; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗

  80. After completing a manual gear change during the road test, what should you do with your shifting hand?

Correct answer: Return it to the steering wheel.

Section 13 expects both hands on the steering wheel except when shifting, followed by returning the hand to the wheel. Maintain smooth steering and continue regular traffic and mirror checks.

Source: Wisconsin Commercial Driver's Manual, May 2026; Section 13; Returning both hands after shifting; printed and physical PDF page 231; reviewed September 21, 2026. ↗
