  1. You need to pull off onto a shoulder that may be loose gravel. What should you do before leaving the pavement?

Correct answer: Check the surface and traffic, signal, and reduce speed before moving onto it.

The shoulder may have much less grip than the roadway. Plan a slow, visible departure, get well clear of traffic, and choose firm support before using the stand.

  2. A motorcycle's drive chain breaks, leaving no drive to the rear wheel, but the wheel is still rolling. What should the rider do?

Correct answer: Close the throttle and bring the motorcycle to a controlled stop in a safe place.

A broken chain can suddenly remove drive and can also create a skid hazard. When the wheel remains rolling, close the throttle and brake to a safe stop instead of trying to continue.

  3. Rain grooves cause a mild wandering sensation, but no mechanical fault is evident. What response is generally appropriate?

Correct answer: Stay relaxed, keep a steady speed and ride straight.

A mild weave on grooves or grating is generally not itself dangerous. Fighting it with abrupt changes can create a greater hazard. This is distinct from a mechanical wobble requiring a safe stop.
