  1. A Wyoming driver has an ordinary Class C license and wants full ordinary motorcycle privileges, not just a learner permit. Which classification is needed?

Correct answer: Class M motorcycle privileges added to the license.

Wyoming Class C excludes motorcycles. Class M is the motorcycle classification and may be added to another class of license.

  2. A Wyoming resident holds Class M as the only class on the license. Does it authorize driving an ordinary passenger car?

Correct answer: No. A motorcycle-only Class M license does not supply Class C car privileges.

Class M may be issued alone to a person not licensed for another classification. Motorcycle privileges do not themselves confer the distinct Class C privilege.

  3. An applicant wants Wyoming’s ordinary motorcycle instruction permit, without using a specialist hardship pathway. What minimum age applies?

Correct answer: At least 15 years old.

The motorcycle instruction-permit subsection permits an application at age 15 after the required written examination and adequate visual acuity.

  4. A Wyoming applicant passes the motorcycle written examination and vision requirement but has not passed a motorcycle driving test. Which motorcycle instruction permit may be issued under that route?

Correct answer: A 90-day motorcycle instruction permit, without a passenger.

The statute distinguishes a 90-day learning permit after the written/vision requirements from the one-year instruction permit available after also passing a driving test. Neither permits a passenger.

  5. What additional test does Wyoming’s motorcycle-permit statute require before the one-year instruction permit may be issued instead of the 90-day route?

Correct answer: Pass a motorcycle driving test as well.

Passing the motorcycle driving test permits the separate one-year instruction route. It remains an instruction permit with no passenger, not an unrestricted license.

  6. A Wyoming motorcycle instruction-permit holder wants to carry an adult who has years of riding experience. Does that experience create a passenger exception?

Correct answer: No. The motorcycle instruction-permit routes prohibit a passenger.

Both the 90-day and one-year motorcycle instruction permits prohibit passengers. Passenger equipment or the proposed passenger’s experience does not remove the permit restriction.

Source: Current Wyoming Statutes, official Title 31 compilation, W.S. 31-7-110(b), both permit routes; physical PDF page 290. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗

  7. A 16-year-old Wyoming motorcycle instruction-permit holder wants to ride at midnight solely to meet friends. No statutory work, school, medical or other listed exception applies. Is that ordinary social trip allowed?

Correct answer: No. The under-17 motorcycle permit is subject to the nighttime restriction.

The motorcycle-permit subsection applies restricted hours to holders under 17. The 5 a.m.–11 p.m. framework has the specifically incorporated medical, work, school and similar exceptions; an ordinary social trip is not one.

  8. A 16-year-old Wyoming motorcycle learner seeks an intermediate motorcycle permit. What practice record must the parent or guardian certify under the statute?

Correct answer: At least 50 actual driving hours, including at least 10 at night.

The intermediate-permit subsection includes motorcycle applicants holding the motorcycle instruction permit. It requires 50 hours, including 10 at night, certified by a parent or guardian; nighttime practice must still comply with the applicable permit rules and exceptions.

  9. A Wyoming rider has advanced from a motorcycle instruction permit to an intermediate motorcycle permit. May the rider now carry one teenage friend?

Correct answer: No. The intermediate motorcycle permit still prohibits every passenger.

The statute gives intermediate motorcycle permits their own no-passenger rule. Do not transfer the limited passenger allowance for an intermediate car permit to a motorcycle.

  10. An applicant successfully completes the WYDOT Basic RiderCourse and presents its completion card to Driver Services within two years. Which testing benefit does current WYDOT training guidance describe?

Correct answer: Waiver of the Class M written and riding tests, with the remaining licensing requirements still applicable.

Current WYDOT training guidance describes a Class M testing waiver when the completion card is presented within two years. The card must be used in the licensing process; training does not eliminate age or other credential requirements.

  11. A first-time applicant is preparing for the WYDOT Basic RiderCourse. Does current WYDOT course guidance require a motorcycle permit before attending?

Correct answer: No. A permit is not required to take the course, though the course has its own eligibility requirements.

The current Motorcycle FAQ expressly says no permit is needed to take the Basic RiderCourse. This course-admission rule is not permission to ride on public roads without the appropriate credential.

  12. An adult Wyoming applicant arrives for the DMV motorcycle skills test without a helmet or eye protection. Does being over 18 remove those test requirements?

Correct answer: No. The test requires a properly fitting helmet and a face shield or goggles.

The current test page requires protective equipment for the rider, including the helmet and face shield or goggles, regardless of this applicant’s adult age. Test conditions are distinct from the general road helmet law.

  13. The Wyoming motorcycle skills-test course is wet after rain. What does current WYDOT testing guidance say?

Correct answer: Motorcycle skills tests are not conducted when the course is wet or icy.

WYDOT does not conduct motorcycle skills tests in rain or snow, or on a wet or icy course. Readiness to ride does not override the test-site safety condition.

  14. A 17-year-old passenger is riding on an ordinary two-wheel motorcycle on a Wyoming public street, not in an authorized parade or enclosed cab. What protection is required by the motorcycle helmet rule?

Correct answer: Approved protective headgear securely fastened on the passenger’s head.

The motorcycle helmet duty covers minors who operate or ride on a motorcycle, and the operator may not permit an unprotected minor passenger. The stated ordinary-road scenario excludes the specialized statutory exceptions.

  15. A Wyoming motorcyclist is riding on a clear afternoon. Must the headlamp be activated?

Correct answer: Yes. Motorcycle headlamps must be activated at all times, including daylight.

The motorcycle-specific provision requires headlamps at all times, expressly including daylight. Daytime visibility is not an exemption.

  16. A car driver wants a Wyoming motorcyclist to stay at the extreme edge so the car can drive alongside within that same lane. What applies?

Correct answer: The motorcycle is entitled to full use of the lane.

The statute protects a motorcycle’s full use of a lane. Its narrow width is not permission for a car to deprive it of that space.

  17. An ordinary Wyoming rider wants to move between two rows of stopped cars to reach the front of a traffic queue. No police-duty or authorized-parade exception applies. What does the motorcycle statute say?

Correct answer: Motorcycle operation between lanes or adjacent rows of vehicles is prohibited.

The statute expressly prohibits riding between traffic lanes or adjacent rows of vehicles. It does not create a general low-speed filtering permission for the ordinary rider in this scenario.

  18. An ordinary Wyoming motorcyclist plans to overtake a moving passenger car without leaving the car’s occupied lane. No special police or parade exception applies. Is this permitted by the motorcycle rule?

Correct answer: No. The same-lane overtaking exception concerns another motorcycle, not a car.

The motorcycle-specific passing rule prohibits overtaking a vehicle in its occupied lane, except another motorcycle. A car’s speed or spare lane width does not make it that exception.

  19. Outside special statutory exceptions, what does Wyoming’s motorcycle statute allow about riding abreast within one lane?

Correct answer: Two motorcycles may ride abreast with both riders’ consent; three or more may not.

The statutory permission requires both motorcycle riders’ consent, and the statute prohibits three or more abreast. The handbook still advises against pairing up because maneuvering room is reduced.

  20. A fully licensed Wyoming rider wants a passenger behind the operator on an ordinary two-wheel motorcycle. Which arrangement meets the motorcycle passenger provisions?

Correct answer: A motorcycle designed for two, with the proper passenger seat and passenger footrests.

The motorcycle must be designed to carry another person and provide appropriate seating. A passenger outside a sidecar or enclosed cab must have footrests. This does not remove a permit’s no-passenger restriction.

Source: Current Wyoming Statutes, official Title 31 compilation, W.S. 31-5-115(a), (b) and (m), physical PDF pages 148-150; anchor page 149 contains the saddle-seat provision. Reviewed September 29, 2026. ↗
